Chapter 14 - The First Siege

The air in the shipyard didn't just smell like salt and rust anymore. It smelled like ozone—the sharp, metallic tang of an opening Rift.

Kaelen stood on the edge of the rusted crane, his black trench coat snapping in the wind. Below him, his newly recruited "Wolves"—the former street thugs he had transformed into a disciplined paramilitary unit—were checking their gear. They didn't look like common criminals anymore. Clad in reinforced tactical vests and carrying modified rifles, they looked like the vanguard of a new world order.

"System," Kaelen muttered, his eyes glowing with a faint, crimson light. "Status of the perimeter."

[System Notification: Structural integrity of Outer Wall at 84%. Detection of multiple High-Energy signatures approaching from the East. Estimated time to contact: 120 seconds.]

A low growl vibrated through the metal beneath his feet. From the shadows of the abandoned containers, they emerged. They weren't just the mindless Scavengers Kaelen had fought in the early days of the Rebirth. These were Void-Stalkers—sleek, six-legged monstrosities with obsidian skin that seemed to swallow the light.

"Boss!" a voice shouted from below. It was Jax, the scarred veteran Kaelen had promoted to lead the ground squad. "The East Gate is buckling! There's too many of them!"

Kaelen didn't move. He didn't panic. In his past life as the Architect, he had watched cities fall because people relied on walls. In this life, he knew that a wall was only as strong as the man standing behind it.

"Hold your positions," Kaelen's voice carried across the shipyard, cold and unwavering. "Do not waste ammunition on the scouts. Wait for the Alpha."

The screeching intensified. The first wave of Stalkers slammed into the reinforced gates, their claws tearing through sheet metal like it was paper. The Wolves shifted, fingers tightening on triggers, eyes darting to Kaelen.

Then, the ground groaned.

A Rift, larger and more jagged than the others, tore open directly in the center of the shipyard. Out stepped a creature twice the size of the others, covered in bone-white armor plating and radiating a pulse of pure dread.

[Warning: Tier-2 Boss 'Rift Sentinel' has appeared. Probability of base survival: 22%.]

"Only twenty-two percent?" Kaelen smirked, jumping from the crane. He didn't fall; he descended, his Architectural Control manipulation localizing the gravity around him.

He landed softly in front of the Sentinel, the dust swirling around his boots. He reached into his coat and pulled out a pair of obsidian-weighted brass knuckles—a gift from his System for reaching Level 15.

"You're in the wrong territory," Kaelen said, his voice dropping an octave as the Mafia God's aura flared, turning the air around him a suffocating shade of red. "This isn't a wasteland anymore. It's my empire."

The Sentinel roared, a sound that shattered the glass in the nearby warehouse. It lunged, its massive bone-blade arm whistling through the air.

Kaelen didn't dodge. He stepped into the strike.

[Skill Activated: Mafia Aegis – Structural Reinforcement.]

The bone-blade slammed into an invisible barrier inches from Kaelen's face, sparks flying as if steel had hit steel. The force of the blow cracked the concrete under Kaelen's feet, but he didn't flinch.

"My turn," Kaelen whispered.

His fist moved in a blur. Each strike wasn't just a punch; it was a targeted demolition. With his Architect's eyes, he saw the structural weak points in the creature's armor. Crack. Shatter. Break.

The Sentinel recoiled, its armored chest caving in under the weight of Kaelen's reinforced blows.

"Now!" Kaelen barked.

On his command, the Warehouse rooftops ignited. Hidden turrets—built using the Shipyard's salvaged scrap and System blueprints—opened fire. A hail of sapphire-colored energy bolts rained down on the smaller Stalkers, turning the shipyard into a slaughterhouse.

But as Kaelen stood over the dying Sentinel, ready to deliver the final blow, his System chimed with a different tone. A cold, mechanical pulse.

Kaelen looked up at the dark sky. They were watching. The secret government group that had eventually betrayed him in the future was already taking notes.

He looked back at the dying creature, then at his men who were cheering their first victory. He knew the monsters were just the beginning. The real siege wasn't coming from the Rifts—it was coming from the people who thought they still owned the world.

"Clean up the mess," Kaelen ordered Jax, his eyes never leaving the sky. "And double the patrols. We aren't just building a base anymore. We're building a fortress they can't ignore."
