Chapter 66 - Chapter 65: Monday. Drain Junction Fourteen. And Something Under The Drain.

Monday route. Seven AM.

Han-Ho was at drain junction fourteen at eight forty seven AM.

The northern section had taken forty five minutes instead of the standard fifty because drains one through thirteen were all clear — the seventh consecutive clear Monday for the standard locations and the first time drains eight through thirteen had been simultaneously clear.

He noted the simultaneous clearance.

Filed it.

Drains 1-13: all clear. First simultaneous clearance of full northern section. Dragon Vein ambient improvement and shard route enhancement compounding. Standard northern section monitoring frequency reducing to biweekly for confirmed clear locations. Filing recommendation for route efficiency adjustment.

He filed the recommendation.

Then arrived at drain fourteen.

The problem drain.

He crouched.

Pressed his hand against the surface.

Read it.

Seven weeks of careful monitoring.

He knew this drain.

He knew the accumulation pattern.

He knew the specific quality of the contamination.

The slightly different texture of it compared to the adjacent drains.

The slight depth variance.

The persistent rate that had not reduced even as all surrounding drains improved.

Today he pressed deeper.

Not surface contact.

Deeper.

Following the contamination source.

Down through the standard mana vein depth.

Down through the Dragon Vein network.

Down further.

Not into the dimensional space.

Into a layer between the standard network and the dimensional space.

A layer he had not felt before.

Because he had never pressed this deep at this specific location.

He felt it.

Something in the between-layer.

Not the deep network entity.

Different.

Smaller.

Much smaller.

But persistent.

The specific persistence of something that had been doing the same thing in the same place for a very long time.

He read it carefully.

Made notes.

Filed them.

Drain junction fourteen source contamination: located in between-layer between standard Dragon Vein network and dimensional space. Not an entity. An accumulation. A contamination deposit from the original blockage incident. When the large non-clean entity crossed the dimensional space twenty thousand years ago it left deposits in multiple locations. This is one. Smaller than the main blockage. In a layer I did not previously have access to. The shard has extended my reading depth to reach it. Filing.

He filed it.

Looked at the drain.

At the twenty thousand year old contamination deposit left by whatever had caused the original blockage.

Sitting in the between-layer.

Feeding contamination into drain junction fourteen for twenty thousand years.

Possibly longer.

Han-Ho pressed his hand against the surface.

The active ambient technique.

Down.

Into the between-layer.

Finding the deposit.

Reading it.

It was old.

The oldest contamination he had encountered.

Older than the blockage residue.

This was the source contamination.

What the entity from the unknown further world had left behind.

Han-Ho cleaned it.

Not quickly.

Not instantly.

It was very old and very dense.

But it came.

Contamination always came off.

That was the nature of cleaning.

Everything that had accumulated incorrectly could be removed.

The length of time did not change that.

At nine eleven AM the between-layer deposit was gone.

Han-Ho lowered his hand.

Made a note.

Drain junction fourteen between-layer deposit: cleaned. Twenty thousand year old source contamination from original blockage incident. Cleaned at nine eleven AM Monday. The drain should now clear to ambient rate within one week. Monitoring to confirm. Filing.

He filed it.

Stood up.

Looked at the drain.

"Done," said Han-Ho.

Moru on his shoulder was very still.

"Master," said Moru.

"Yes."

"You just cleaned the original source contamination from the blockage incident."

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

"From twenty thousand years ago."

"Yes."

"That was in a between-layer below the Dragon Vein network."

"Yes," said Han-Ho. "The shard extended the reading depth enough to find it."

"You have been monitoring this drain for seven weeks specifically to find it."

"I noticed the rate anomaly in week three," said Han-Ho. "The source was at a depth I could not initially access. The shard made it accessible."

Moru was quiet.

"You were waiting for the shard," said Moru.

Han-Ho looked at the drain.

"I was monitoring the anomaly," said Han-Ho. "The shard provided the tool to address it."

"But if the shard had not arrived—"

"I would have found another way," said Han-Ho. "Eventually. The accumulation pattern was clear. The source was identifiable. The depth access was the limiting factor." He made a final note. "The shard removed the limiting factor."

Moru looked at the drain.

At the specific clean drain that had been persistently anomalous for seven weeks.

"Master," said Moru.

"Yes."

"The entity from the very large world brought you the shard."

"Yes."

"The shard extended your depth access."

"Yes."

"The depth access let you clean the original source contamination."

"Yes."

"The entity gave you the tool to clean the last piece of the original contamination."

Han-Ho looked at the drain.

Made a note.

Shard → depth access → source contamination → drain junction fourteen clean. The entity's gift completed the cleaning that the main blockage clear began. Filed.

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

"Of course it did," said Moru.

"Of course," said the bag.

"Of course," said Han-Ho.

He continued the route.

At the GS25 Cho Hyun was on shift.

Han-Ho came in at ten forty three.

Cho Hyun had the kimbap ready.

Han-Ho paid.

Sat outside.

Ate.

Made notes about the afternoon Dragon Vein flow assessment.

About the between-layer discovery.

About the filing recommendations.

Cho Hyun came to the door.

"Han-Ho," said Cho Hyun.

"Yes."

"You look different today."

Han-Ho looked at him.

"Different how," said Han-Ho.

Cho Hyun looked at him carefully.

The specific eight month shift assessment.

"The same," said Cho Hyun. "But—" He paused. "The same and finished."

Han-Ho looked at his kimbap.

"Finished how," said Han-Ho.

"Like when a drain is clean," said Cho Hyun. "It is still a drain. It will need cleaning again. But right now it is clean and you can see it is clean and that is different from when it needed cleaning."

Han-Ho looked at his notebook.

At the notes.

At the filed reports.

At the route.

"The drain is clean," said Han-Ho.

"Yes," said Cho Hyun.

"All of them."

"For today," said Cho Hyun.

"For today," said Han-Ho.

"And tomorrow they will need checking again."

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

"And you will check them."

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

Cho Hyun nodded.

"That is the job," said Cho Hyun.

"That is the job," said Han-Ho.

Cho Hyun went back inside.

Added nothing to the system.

Some things did not need to be in the system.

Some things just needed to be said.

Han-Ho finished his kimbap.

Made the route note for the afternoon.

Filed it.

The morning was done.

Clean.

Min-Seo called at eleven AM.

"Han-Ho."

"Yes."

"The between-layer deposit."

"You read the report."

"Ms. Yoon forwarded it." A pause. "Han-Ho. You cleaned the original source contamination from the incident that caused the twenty thousand year blockage."

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

"From under drain junction fourteen."

"Yes."

"The last piece."

Han-Ho was quiet.

"Probably not the last piece," said Han-Ho. "The between-layer may have multiple deposits. The deep network entity described the original contaminating entity as large. A large entity moving through the dimensional space would leave deposits at multiple points."

"But the main one," said Min-Seo. "The one under drain fourteen."

"The densest local deposit yes," said Han-Ho. "There will be others. I am filing a between-layer survey request for the full Dragon Vein network. The shard's depth access means I can now read the between-layer systematically. There may be more deposits. I will find them."

Min-Seo was quiet for a long moment.

"You are going to survey the between-layer of the entire Dragon Vein network," said Min-Seo.

"It needs doing," said Han-Ho.

"Yes," said Min-Seo.

"The deposits feed contamination into the standard network. Even with the main blockage clear and the upstream junctions open the between-layer deposits will cause persistent anomalies if not addressed."

"Like drain fourteen," said Min-Seo.

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

"You have been monitoring that for seven weeks."

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

"Because it was anomalous."

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

"Because you notice anomalies."

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

"Because that is the job," said Min-Seo.

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

Min-Seo was quiet.

"Han-Ho," said Min-Seo.

"Yes."

"Do you ever stop."

Han-Ho looked at the street.

At the Monday morning Mapo-gu.

At the clean drains.

At the Dragon Vein energy flowing cleanly underneath them.

At the route that continued north through the afternoon.

"No," said Han-Ho.

"The cleaning."

"The job," said Han-Ho. "No."

"Why not," said Min-Seo.

Han-Ho looked at the GS25.

At Cho Hyun inside doing his shift.

At the honey butter chips display.

At the kimbap wrapper in the bin where it belonged.

"Because something will need cleaning tomorrow," said Han-Ho. "And the day after. And the day after that. The job does not finish. It continues." He paused. "That is not a problem. That is what makes it real."

Min-Seo was quiet for a very long time.

"Okay," said Min-Seo.

Not the professional okay.

Not the I Re-Awakened twice okay.

The okay from the medical center.

The quiet one.

The specific okay of someone who has found something they did not expect and has stopped arguing with it.

"Okay," said Han-Ho.

"I am coming to the afternoon assessment," said Min-Seo.

"The route continues at noon," said Han-Ho.

"I know," said Min-Seo.

"Eastern section first."

"I know," said Min-Seo.

"Drain fifteen through twenty two."

"I know Han-Ho."

"Some of them may have between-layer deposits."

"I know," said Min-Seo. "I am coming."

"Okay," said Han-Ho.

He put his phone away.

Made a note.

Min-Seo: coming to afternoon assessment. Filed.

He made one more note.

Did not file it.

Put it in his pocket.

The pocket had so many folded notes now that it bulged slightly.

He looked at it.

Looked at the route direction.

Looked at the Monday morning that was clean and present and real.

He went.

At the eastern section drain fifteen at twelve thirty seven PM the sword pointed down.

Aria looked at Han-Ho.

"Between-layer," said Han-Ho.

He crouched.

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

He addressed it.

Forty five seconds with the shard in his hand.

Stood up.

Noted it.

Filed it.

Moved to drain sixteen.

The sword pointed down.

Han-Ho crouched.

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

Min-Seo stood behind him.

Watching.

"How many," said Min-Seo.

"Unknown," said Han-Ho. "Between-layer survey will establish the full count. The eastern section appears to have significant deposit density."

"Makes sense," said Min-Seo. "The entity crossed from the east."

Han-Ho made a note.

"Yes," said Han-Ho. "The crossing direction. The eastern section was the entry path. More deposits along the entry path. Logical."

He filed it.

Moved to drain seventeen.

The sword pointed down.

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

He cleaned it.

Forty three seconds.

Drain eighteen.

The sword pointed down.

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

Forty one seconds.

Getting faster.

The shard in his hand warm.

The between-layer accessible.

The route continuing.

The afternoon clean.

The way Monday afternoons were supposed to be.
