Chapter 26 - A PROMISE BEFORE GOODBYE

JAY'S POV

Jerk. Idiot. Asshole. Motherfucker. Damn you.

I kept murmuring curses again and again as I walked to a corner where no one could see me. Then I slammed my hand against the railing.

"You are really an asshole, Keifer."

I was still hoping that he loved me.Still waiting for the day he would come to me and explain everything.

But instead… he was giving up on me.

He had already let me go.

"You don't love me anymore. Damn you."

I didn't even realize that a few tears had already slipped from my eyes. I was about to leave the party and go home when I saw someone walking toward me.

Of course.

The king of assholes himself.

"Jay Jay," he said. "I want to talk to you."

Oh really?

After letting me go?

What the hell did he even want now?

"I don't want to talk to you. Leave me alone."

But he grabbed my wrist—not harshly, but firmly.

"Please, Jay Jay," he said softly. "Listen to me for once."

"Why should I? So you can lie to me again? You already confirmed that you don't love me. You said you're letting me go. So what the hell do you want now?"

"Jay, I know you're mad at me, but please listen. I want to explain something."

"At least you know I'm mad! DAMN YOU! YOU MOTHERFUCKING IDIOT! I'M SO DAMN PISSED AT YOU!"

I hit his arm angrily.

Suddenly he stepped closer into my personal space and grabbed my wrists. Our faces were only inches apart. For a moment, my brain completely short-circuited.

"You know," he said quietly, "I'm counting the profanities. I'll collect them later."

"Fuck your profanity rule. Don't come closer to me."

"Please, Jay Jay," he said, almost pleading. "I'm begging you. Listen to me. This is my last chance."

"What do you mean last chance?"

"I'll tell you everything. Come with me."

I was too tired to fight anymore. So I followed him. He led me to his car, and we both sat in the back seat.

"Now speak. Tell me another lie. Or maybe another truth you've been hiding from me—like everyone else."

"Jay," he said quietly, "I'm not going to lie. Believe me."

"How, Keifer? How should I believe you? You told me everything we had… every moment we spent together… was a lie. Just part of your revenge."

I swallowed hard.

"I tried to move on from you. But your actions keep making me feel like you still have feelings for me. And then you push me away again."

My voice cracked.

I was waiting for him to say something. But instead… he surprised me. He cupped my face with both of his hands and pressed his lips against mine.

I froze.

I should have pushed him away. But I didn't. I had missed this.

It had been weeks since the last time he kissed me.

Like a fool, I responded to the kiss, moving my lips softly against his.

It was slow.

Desperate.

Long.

As if he was pouring every emotion he had into it.

As if he was trying to say:

I didn't leave you. I'm still here.

When we finally pulled away, we stared at each other

"You're making me crazy."

He sighed quietly.

"I'm Mark Keifer Watson. I'm stronger than you think. Stronger than people believe. And I'm the king of Ulopongs."

He looked straight into my eyes.

"But when it comes to you, Jay… I'm not that king anymore. I'm just a man who's completely helpless in front of the girl who is his entire world."

I was stunned by his words. Butterflies exploded inside my stomach.

"I lied, Jay. To you. To our friends. To everyone. Even to myself. I lied when I said I didn't have feelings for you."

He gently brushed my cheek.

"But I do. Those feelings won't disappear… even if I want them to."

He looked down for a moment.

"I know I hurt you. And I deserve every harsh word you said to me."

He paused.

"You want me to leave you alone… so I will."

My heart dropped.

"Keifer…"

"I'll stop only for a while."

His eyes darkened with determination.

"Because when I come back… you will be mine."

"Where are you going?"

"To London. To claim my inheritance. I'm leaving tonight."

My heart skipped.

"I'll be gone for a while. But I will come back, Jay."

His voice became gentle.

"I'm not leaving you. I never will."

He looked at me seriously.

"Until then… please wait for me."

"Please don't move on."

I whispered softly.

"Promise me something."

"What?"

"Promise me you'll come back. That you won't leave me hanging halfway."

He smiled softly.

"I promise, Jay. For you. For us."

For a moment we stayed there silently, staring at each other. Then I broke the eye contact.

"Okay… I should go now."

I opened the car door. But suddenly he grabbed my wrist and pulled me closer.

"Before you go," he said with a hopeful smile, "can I get a goodbye kiss?"

I knew I shouldn't. But when it came to him… I could never resist. So I leaned closer.

And kissed him.
