Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: The Mountain Gambit

The "Pre-Wedding" photoshoot was supposed to be a serene affair in the Mogan Mountains. Lin Chen had scouted a location with a perfect 98.2% ratio of natural light to mist, and Mei Ling had organized three different sets of designer hanfus and modern suits.

But as our two black SUVs climbed the winding mountain road, the GPS on the dashboard began to glitch. The screen flickered from a map of the resort to a familiar, chilling geometric pattern: A pink square, a triangle, and a circle.

"Is someone running a nostalgic emulator on the car's OS?" Su Lan asked, her fingers already flying across her laptop.

"It's not an emulator," Li Yan said, his eyes narrowing as he looked at the road ahead.

A heavy iron gate, painted a bright, sickeningly cheerful pink, blocked the path. Standing in front of it were four figures wearing the old tracksuits of Longhua Academy—our fiercest rivals from the 2018 Inter-School Olympiad.

The "Squid" Challenge

"The Seven Stars of Shenghua," the leader of the Longhua group sneered. It was Chen Hao, the boy Li Yan had crushed in the Math Finals. "We heard the 'King' was getting married to his 'Equal.' But we also heard a rumor... that the 98.2% was a manipulated variable."

"The 1.6% leak," I whispered, stepping out of the car. I was wearing a flowing blue silk dress, but I immediately hitched the skirt and tied it at my waist. "Professor Chen wasn't the only one watching the logs."

"If you want to reach the resort for your pretty pictures," Chen Hao challenged, gesturing to the steep, wooded hillside behind him, "you have to play. One last match. Red Light, Green Light: The Mountain Edition."

"This is illogical," Li Yan said, stepping out beside me, looking like a lethal modern CEO. "We aren't children anymore."

"Then it should be easy for a 99.8% student," Chen Hao taunted. "Unless your 'Logic' has gone soft from too many banquets."

The Seven Stars Strategy

"We play," I said, looking at the group. Zhang Wei was already stretching; Jia Yi was checking the terrain; Lin Chen and Mei Ling were locking the cars.

"The rules are simple," Chen Hao announced. "The 'Doll' at the top of the hill is a high-frequency motion sensor linked to a paint-ball turret. You have five minutes to reach the summit. If you're marked, your 'Star' is out."

"Su Lan, can you hack the sensor?" I asked quietly.

"No," she hissed, her face pale. "It's a closed-loop mechanical system. No Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth. It's purely optical. We have to do this the old-fashioned way."

"Then we use the 'Shadow-Sync'," Li Yan commanded.

The Run

The whistle blew.

We moved as one. It was a beautiful, terrifying sight. When the sensor turned away, we were a blur of blue and black sprinting up the rocky incline. When the "Doll" snapped its head back, we were statues.

Zhang Wei was the anchor, his runner's lungs barely even heaving. Jia Yi used her athlete's balance to freeze mid-stride on a slippery rock.

"Li Yan, watch the left!" I shouted.

A turret fired—a burst of red paint. Li Yan didn't even look. He trusted my call, dropping into a low crouch just as the paint hissed over his head, splashing a tree trunk.

"Forty seconds left!" Mei Ling cried out, her silk dress torn at the hem but her spirit unbroken.

"The final stretch is a 45-degree incline," Lin Chen noted, his artist's eye calculating the slope. "We can't stop there without sliding."

"Then we don't stop," I said, looking at Li Yan.

The Leap of Faith

The "Doll" began its final turn. Green Light...

We bolted. The Longhua rivals were laughing, waiting for us to fail on the steep, muddy bank. But they forgot one thing: we spent our teenage years playing Hide and Seek and Lock and Key in the most complex school layout in the province.

"Wei, Jia Yi—form a base!" I yelled.

The November Guardians dropped down, locking arms to create a human step. Mei Ling and Lin Chen flew over them. Su Lan followed, Zhang Wei catching her waist to steady her.

Li Yan and I were the last. The sensor was turning... Red Light!

We didn't stop. We couldn't.

Li Yan grabbed my hand and swung me. Using his momentum and my karate-trained core, I launched upward, clearing the final ledge just as the turret hummed to life. I reached back, my fingers locking with his.

THWACK. A paint-ball hit the ground where Li Yan's foot had been a millisecond ago. I hauled him up, and we rolled onto the summit together, breathless and covered in mountain dust.

The Victor's Pose

The Longhua team stood at the bottom, silent. They had been defeated by the same "Seven Stars" synergy that had haunted them for six years.

Lin Chen didn't waste a second. He grabbed his professional camera from his bag. The sun was hitting the peak of the mountain, the mist swirling around us, our clothes torn, our faces smudged with dirt and red paint.

"Don't move!" Lin Chen shouted.

He snapped the photo.

The Image: All seven of us, standing on the edge of the world. Li Yan has his arm around my waist, his white shirt stained red; I'm leaning against him, laughing; Su Lan is actually smiling while leaning on Zhang Wei's shoulder; Mei Ling and Jia Yi are doing the "Seven Stars" hand sign.

"Forget the designer hanfus," Mei Ling laughed, wiping a smudge from her nose. "This is the best wedding photo we'll ever have."

"It's 100% authentic," Li Yan murmured, kissing my temple. "The logic of a perfect memory."
