Chapter 31 - Title: When the System Chose Me Last (Part 2: Hunger Awakens)

The first thing Arif noticed…

Was the silence.

Not the empty kind.

Not the peaceful kind.

This silence… was alive.

It pressed against his ears, wrapped around his body, and crawled under his skin like something watching… waiting.

Arif stood in the middle of the broken store, his chest rising slowly.

Too slowly.

He blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Something had changed.

Before… his thoughts were loud.

Messy.

Full of fear.

Now?

Everything felt… quiet.

Controlled.

Cold.

"...Is this me?"

His voice sounded distant.

Then—

A whisper.

Not from outside.

From inside.

[ABILITY: SENSE — ACTIVATED]

Arif froze.

"What… was that?"

And then it happened.

The world expanded.

No—

Not visually.

He could feel it.

Beyond the walls.

Beyond the streets.

Presence.

Dozens of them.

Moving.

Breathing.

Hungry.

Arif staggered slightly, grabbing the wall.

"This… this is insane…"

But it didn't stop.

The more he focused…

The clearer it became.

Three… no, four creatures outside.

Slow.

Wandering.

And one—

Farther away.

Faster.

Different.

Arif's eyes narrowed.

"That one…"

It didn't feel like the others.

It felt… aware.

[HUNGER: 38%]

The number appeared again.

Lower than before.

But still there.

Still waiting.

Still demanding.

Arif clenched his fist.

"So this is how it works…"

Eat…

Survive…

Gain power…

Lose yourself.

A sudden crash echoed outside.

Glass breaking.

Metal scraping.

Arif's head snapped toward the door.

The slow creatures reacted.

He could feel them moving.

Toward the sound.

And the fast one—

It was coming too.

But not slowly.

It was running.

"...That's bad."

Arif moved instantly.

Not thinking.

Just reacting.

He slipped behind a broken shelf, crouching low.

His heartbeat remained steady.

Too steady.

Even now…

He wasn't panicking.

Seconds later—

A figure appeared outside.

Human.

Alive.

A girl.

She was running, her breath uneven, her clothes torn.

"Help! Someone—please!"

Her voice cracked.

Behind her—

Three creatures.

And gaining.

Arif watched silently.

His mind split into two voices.

Help her.

Use her.

He shut his eyes.

"No…"

But the second voice didn't disappear.

It grew stronger.

[HUNGER: 45%]

"She's going to die…"

Arif whispered.

The girl tripped.

Hit the ground hard.

The creatures closed in.

Arif moved.

Before he could think.

Before he could stop himself.

He burst through the door.

"HEY!"

The creatures turned.

Their empty eyes locking onto him.

"Run!"

He shouted at the girl.

She didn't hesitate.

She ran.

Now it was just him.

And them.

Three against one.

Arif tightened his grip on the metal rod.

His senses sharpened.

Every movement…

Every breath…

Every weakness…

Clear.

The first creature lunged.

Arif stepped aside smoothly.

Too smoothly.

"...I'm faster?"

He didn't question it.

He struck.

CRACK.

The creature dropped.

The second came from the side—

Arif ducked.

Swung upward.

Another hit.

The third—

Stopped.

It looked at him.

Not like an animal.

Like something thinking.

Arif's body tensed.

"This one… is different."

Then—

It smiled.

A twisted, unnatural smile.

And rushed him.

Fast.

Too fast.

Arif barely blocked.

The impact sent him crashing into the wall.

Pain exploded in his shoulder.

"Ghh—!"

The creature didn't stop.

It attacked again.

Relentless.

Precise.

"This isn't normal…"

Arif's vision sharpened.

Time slowed.

A gap.

A single opening.

He moved.

Dodged.

Turned.

Swung—

CRACK.

The creature froze.

Then collapsed.

Silence returned.

Arif stood there, breathing heavily.

Looking at the bodies.

And then—

The glow appeared.

Stronger than before.

[HIGH-QUALITY RESOURCE DETECTED]

His stomach twisted.

Again.

[HUNGER: 62%]

Arif stared at the glowing body.

"No…"

But his body leaned forward.

"This isn't survival anymore…"

His voice shook slightly.

"It's addiction."

Behind him—

A voice.

"...You're like them."

Arif turned.

The girl stood there.

Watching him.

Afraid.

"I saw what you did…"

Her voice trembled.

"You didn't just fight…"

She stepped back.

"You were enjoying it."

Arif froze.

Was he?

He didn't answer.

Because deep inside—

He wasn't sure anymore.

The system notification appeared again.

[PHASE TWO APPROACHING]

And this time—

Arif didn't feel fear.

He felt something else.

Excitement.
