The car window was half-open. Pale yellow light from a streetlamp filtered through the gap and into the back seat.
Roman Rhodes slowly exhaled a puff of smoke. "When are you heading back to Calderin?"
"Probably tomorrow." Stella Sterling looked at the man in the dim light. "Why? Is something wrong, Mr. Rhodes?"
Roman Rhodes glanced sideways at her.
His eyes were deeper and more distant than the freshly fallen night sky. "It's nothing. You should go."
Stella Sterling murmured an "oh" and said goodbye.
As she got out of the car, she moved deliberately, her peripheral vision stealing a glance at the seat she had just left.
For a split second, it had seemed like Roman Rhodes had something to say.
But for some reason, he hadn't said it.
Stella intentionally slowed her pace as she walked away, but disappointingly, the man in the back seat remained silent.
'Was my gut feeling wrong?'
Stella took two more steps, harboring this doubt.
