The dining room was softly lit, candles flickering on the table, casting a warm glow over the polished wood. I held the twins' hands tightly, while Yushen guided Xavier beside him. Tonight, we were introducing Anna and the twins to his family—carefully, but honestly.
"Remember," Yushen whispered as we entered, "just be yourselves. Let the kids show who they are."
I nodded, smoothing Xia's hair. "We got this."
The first to greet us were Fiona and Simon, already seated and smiling. Adam, Aurora, and Anna waved excitedly at the twins. Xia immediately waved back, her little face lighting up.
"Hi! I'm Xia, and this is my gege Xayden!" she announced proudly.
Xayden, trying to look "cool," gave a shy wave. Xavier smiled from Yushen's side.
Dinner was laid out beautifully: roasted chicken, vegetables, and fresh bread. Conversation flowed easily at first, mostly with Fiona and Simon helping the kids feel at home. The twins immediately engaged with Adam and Aurora, showing their Lego creations and favorite drawings.
Then came the moment of truth—Yushen's late wife's parents and his mother.
"Anna… it's nice to meet you," Yushen's mom said formally, her hands folded on her lap. Her smile was polite but guarded.
I gave a soft, respectful bow. "Thank you, aunty. I'm happy to finally meet you."
"We've heard a lot from Yushen… about you and the twins." His eyes flicked to the kids.
"Yes," I said gently, watching the twins fidget slightly. "I understand your concern. I just want the kids to be happy and safe."
The tension was subtle but real. Yushen's mom didn't speak against it outright, but her eyes betrayed hesitation.
Xia, ever perceptive, whispered to me, "Mom… gege looks nervous."
"It's okay, baby. Just be yourself," I reassured her softly.
Yushen took my hand, leaning close. "They're worried about Xavier… and I get it. But they'll see the twins aren't a threat—they're part of our family too."
Dinner continued with polite conversation. The twins shared stories about school and their favorite activities, Xavier occasionally chiming in. Fiona and Simon kept the energy warm and playful, helping to smooth over any awkward pauses.
"You've done a wonderful job," Fiona whispered to me. "They'll warm up… slowly, but they'll see how much love is here."
Yushen's mother finally spoke, her voice measured. "Anna… the kids are… charming. But this is a big change for the family. We'll see how things progress."
I smiled gently. "I understand, aunty. We're not rushing anything. I just hope in time… everyone can see that we care for each other deeply."
Yushen reached over and squeezed my hand, a quiet promise. The twins, sensing a mix of nerves, huddled close to me, while Xavier leaned against Yushen.
For the first time that evening, I felt a fragile bridge forming between past concerns and the future we were building. The night wasn't perfect—his mom's approval was uncertain—but the warmth of Fiona, Simon, and the kids reminded me that love was stronger than hesitation.
