The late afternoon sun cast a soft glow through the living room. Xavier was quietly building a tower of blocks on the floor, while Xia and Xayden were drawing together at the table, occasionally glancing up at Yushen and me.
"I think it's time we talk to someone who knows me… and can guide us," Yushen said, closing the school planner. "Fiona."
I nodded. "Yes. I know her from before… when you and I were dating. She's always been supportive of you."
"Exactly," Yushen said. "And Simon too. They understand the situation completely. They'll know how to help us tell the rest of the family."
A short while later, the doorbell rang. I opened it to Fiona and Simon, smiling warmly, hand in hand, with their three kids—Adam, Aurora, and Anna—trailing behind.
"Anna! Yushen!" Fiona exclaimed, hugging us both. "It's so good to see you again. And I see the twins already! They're adorable."
"Hi Fiona, Simon… it's great to see you," I replied, smiling. "And you must be Adam, Aurora, and Anna. Nice to meet you all."
The kids waved shyly, Xia whispering to Xayden, "Mom… they seem so nice!"
"We've heard a lot about you two," Fiona said, glancing at me. "And Yushen told us how wonderfully you've raised the twins on your own. We knew you'd be special."
Xayden puffed out his chest proudly. "We help too!"
"I know you do," Yushen said, ruffling his hair. "And today, we want your advice… about the twins, their schooling, and how we handle the bigger picture."
We all gathered around the dining table with tea and snacks. The kids immediately became fascinated by Fiona and Simon's stories about Adam, Aurora, and Anna, comparing toys, and laughing over shared games. Xavier quietly stacked his blocks nearby, glancing up at Yushen with a little smile.
"So," I began, "we need guidance on how to tell the rest of the family about the twins… and about us."
Fiona nodded thoughtfully. "I understand completely. Yushen, you've been cautious, but now it's time. The key is honesty and showing the kids that they're loved first. Everything else will follow."
"Exactly," Yushen said. "I can't just drop this on everyone at once. I want them to see the twins as part of our family, and Anna as part of my life—without confusion or hurt."
"We can help," Simon added. "We've seen blended families before, and we know it can be delicate. It's all about patience, communication, and letting the kids feel secure."
Xia, ever curious, tugged at my sleeve. "Mom… when do they meet us like… real family?"
I smiled softly. "Soon, baby… soon. Fiona and Simon are helping us plan the best way."
"Anna," Fiona said gently, giving me a knowing smile, "we know your history with Yushen. You've been patient and understanding. You've always cared, and now you're building your family carefully. That's what matters."
"Thank you," I said softly, squeezing Yushen's hand. "I just want the twins to have love and stability. That's all."
We spent the next hour talking through strategies: how to introduce the twins to extended family, timing, involving them in small ways, and preparing everyone emotionally. The kids occasionally chimed in, asking questions, laughing, and running around Xavier, making everyone smile.
By the time Fiona and Simon left, the house felt lighter and warmer. Yushen and I shared a quiet glance.
"We can do this," he said softly, wrapping an arm around me and Xavier. "With them supporting us… we'll make it right."
"Yes," I whispered, leaning my head on his shoulder. "Step by step… together."
The twins ran around, giggling, Xavier stacked blocks with his dad, and I finally felt it—our little family was ready to face the world, united and full of love.
