Chapter 16: The Final Dawn
No one slept in Neo-Arcadia that night.
In the streets, people gathered in small groups, whispering, repairing, saying goodbye. In the makeshift hospitals, doctors prepared the wounded for the coming battle. In the tunnels underground, engineers charged the last weapons.
Lena did not sleep either.
She stood on the roof of the city hall building, looking at the sky. The stars were still visible, but on the distant horizon, there was a faint glow. It was not lightning. It was Veras's fleet approaching.
Tesla climbed to the roof. He stood beside her.
"They will arrive at dawn," he said.
"I know."
"Are you afraid?"
She looked at him. In his eyes, she saw the same fire burning in her chest. Not fear. Something else. Readiness.
"No. I am done being afraid."
He took her hand. She felt his warmth.
"No matter what happens tomorrow," he said, "I am glad I returned. I am glad I fought beside you."
"We will not die tomorrow."
"How do you know?"
She smiled. A cold, beautiful, dangerous smile. "Because we have something they do not."
"What?"
"A reason to die."
Underground, Kain was overseeing the preparation of the Revolutionary Army.
He was different this time. Not the cold commander who had hunted them weeks ago. He was something else. A man who had found a reason to fight after thinking he had lost all reasons.
"Kain," Lena called when she descended to the bunker.
He turned to her. His face was still stern, but his eyes were warmer.
"The robots are ready," he said. "Dario's army is ready to move at any moment."
"And Veras?"
"His fleet will be within range within hours. We cannot stop them all. But we can make them pay a heavy price."
"That is enough."
He looked at her for a long time. "Lena... I am sorry."
"For what?"
"For everything. For what I was. For what I did."
She was silent for a moment. Then she said, "Do not be sorry. Be different. That is better than an apology."
He nodded. Then he returned to work.
In her cell, Elara was preparing to die.
She did not know when it would come. Perhaps tomorrow. Perhaps today. But she knew it was coming.
She sat on her metal bed, her eyes closed. She thought of everything. The Collapse. The fear. Koren, the scientist she had exiled because he told her her path was wrong. Dario, the man who died to free her city. Lena, the girl who had once been an engineer in her lab, who was now the leader of a revolution.
"I was wrong," she whispered for the thousandth time.
But this time, she did not feel sadness. She felt something else. She felt peace.
She opened her eyes. In the darkness of her cell, she saw a faint glow. It was not the glow of fire. It was the glow of dawn.
The final dawn.
In outer space, Veras stood on the bridge of his mother ship.
The clock showed four in the morning. In two hours, his fleet would be above Neo-Arcadia. In two hours, the battle would begin. In two hours, everything would end.
"Governor Veras," said the officer beside him. "Preparations are complete."
"Good."
"Do you have anything to say to the troops?"
Veras thought for a moment. Then he said, "No. Words do not change anything. Weapons do."
He looked at the planet below. He saw the faint light of the cities. He saw the long shadows of dawn.
"Lena," he whispered to himself. "You were a good opponent. But that is not enough."
He turned his back to the window. "Activate the attack engines."
In Neo-Arcadia, everyone was in position.
The Revolutionary Army was lined up in the main squares. Dario's army was deployed in the tunnels, ready to emerge. Tesla was in the command center, watching the radar. Kain was at the front, preparing to fight.
Lena stood alone on the roof of the city hall building.
The sky was beginning to lighten. Dawn was approaching. And on the horizon, the black dots of Veras's fleet began to appear.
She took out the small drive Dario had died for. She looked at it one last time.
"Dario," she whispered. "We did what we could. The rest is up to fate."
She put the drive in her pocket. She raised her head.
"Let us go."
She descended from the roof. She joined her army.
The final battle was about to begin.
