Chapter 23 - Chapter 15: Message from the Enemy

Chapter 15: Message from the Enemy

A week after the discovery of Dario's army, Neo-Arcadia had changed again.

The city was no longer afraid. It was not completely free yet, but it was different. People walked through the streets without lowering their heads. Children played in squares that had been execution grounds weeks ago. The elderly sat on public benches, talking about rain no one remembered anymore.

But everyone knew the calm would not last.

On the morning of the eighth day, a message appeared on every screen in the city.

It was not from Elara. It was not from Kain. It was from someone Lena had never seen before.

He was a man in his fifties, his face carved with wrinkles, his eyes deep black. He wore a pure white uniform, completely different from the black of the Silence Units. He looked calm. Confident. Dangerous.

"Citizens of Neo-Arcadia," he said, his voice smooth as silk, but carrying a tone that brooked no argument. "My name is Governor Veras. I am the head of the Neo-Geneva Council."

He paused for a moment, as if giving them time to absorb his words.

"We have watched what happened in your city. We saw the rebellion. We saw the fall of the tower. We saw how you used technology to blind our eyes. It was... impressive."

He smiled. But his smile did not reach his eyes.

"But admiration does not stop duty. The system Elara Venn built was not perfect. I admit that. But it was better than the chaos you are about to drown in. You think you have been liberated. But in truth, you have opened the gates of hell."

He tilted his head slightly.

"So I give you a deadline. Three days. Surrender your leaders. Lena. Tesla. Kain. Disband the Revolutionary Army. Dismantle your weapons. Put the wristbands back on. Otherwise... we will erase your city from existence."

The screen went dark.

The silence that followed was heavier than any scream.

In the city hall building, an argument erupted.

"We cannot surrender!" shouted one of the leaders. "We have fought too long!"

"Only three days!" said another. "How can we prepare in three days?"

"Veras does not make empty threats," Kain said, his voice cold, steady. "I have seen him before. He does not send idle warnings."

Lena was silent. She stared at the dark screen, thinking.

"What do you know about him?" she asked Kain.

"Veras is the shadow behind Elara. While she was the face, he was the mind. He designed the Silence Units. He developed the algorithms. He built the automated armies. Elara dreamed. Veras... Veras executes."

"Why have we never seen him before?"

"Because he does not like the spotlight. He prefers to work in the shadows. But now... he has come out."

Tesla stood by the window, looking at the sky. "Three days," he said. "Not enough to prepare. But enough to be afraid."

"We will not be afraid," Lena said.

He looked at her. In her eyes, he saw that unquenchable fire.

"What do you plan?"

"I will send him a message."

In the communication room, Lena sat before the camera.

Beside her stood the robot wearing Dario's face. Its blue eyes were fixed on the lens.

"Veras," she said, her voice calm, steady. "I have heard your ultimatum. Now hear my reply."

She paused for a moment. She gathered her thoughts.

"We will not surrender our leaders. We will not dismantle our weapons. We will not put your wristbands back on. Because we are not slaves. We were slaves. But we have been liberated."

She raised her hand. She pointed to the robot wearing Dario's face.

"This is Dario's legacy. A man who died for our freedom. He left us an army of machines designed to protect, not to kill. That is the difference between us and you. You build machines to control. We build machines to serve."

She looked directly into the camera.

"You want to erase our city? Come. We will be waiting for you. But know that every soldier you send, every machine you deploy, every algorithm you run... will face a fire you have never seen before. A fire called freedom."

She cut the connection.

In the room, silence fell.

Then Kain spoke. His voice was different. Not cold as usual. There was something new in it. Something like hope.

"That was... good."

Lena looked at him. "Do you think it will deter them?"

"No. Veras is not deterred by anything. But it will make him think. Perhaps... it will give us an extra day. Perhaps it will make him hesitate."

"One day is not enough."

"Every day is enough."

In her cell, Elara heard Lena's words.

They were broadcast through the city's speakers. Every word reached Elara like an arrow.

A fire called freedom.

Elara closed her eyes. She remembered the days when she used to dream of something like this. Days before fear became her only master.

"You have won, Lena," she whispered. "Even if you die tomorrow. Even if your city burns. You have won. Because you made me feel something I have not felt in decades."

She opened her eyes. Tears streamed down her wrinkled face.

"I felt hope."

In outer space, above Earth's atmosphere, the Neo-Geneva fleet was preparing.

Hundreds of warships. Thousands of drones. Tens of thousands of automated soldiers.

Veras stood on the bridge of the mother ship, looking at the blue and green planet below. It was beautiful. It was distant. It reminded him of something he had lost long ago.

"Governor Veras," said an officer beside him. "We have received a message from Neo-Arcadia. Do you wish to view it?"

"Play it."

He watched Lena's message. His face did not change. His black eyes remained steady.

When it ended, he was silent for a moment. Then he said:

"Impressive. Truly."

He turned to the officer.

"Cancel the deadline. We will strike tomorrow at dawn."

"Sir... why?"

Veras smiled. His smile was cold, like ice.

"Because if she were given three days, she would have won."
