Chapter 23 - The Great Escape

Conquerors haki. She brought such a world-breaking power all the way out to the north blue. This only cemented what Regan had thought about earlier. She indeed was holding back during their first and second fight.

Regan had every intention to spin back and fight her one more time, but he gave way to reason rather than his inner urge to be reckless. He leapt away and grabbed Izgrim who had been standing there frozen like some living statue the entire time.

Together, with Regan's legs now coated in haki to add to his speed, they covered a great distance as Regan rushed his way towards the docks.

There was a loud CRASH! that resounded through the air. The clouds parted as if the noise itself had ripped them away, and the world rumbled as Tina's sword came crashing down into the earth, sending up groups of people--including Regan and Izgrim--soaring a couple feet up into the air.

Gravity pulled them back down, and Regan wasted no time in continuing his escape. The ground was now cracked and splintered however, making his escape more perilous and arduous, a trip and a fall had brought back down onto the ground here and there.

It was much worse in Izgrim's case. The boy had ran out of air before they had even gotten anywhere near the docks. Regan forced him off of the ground and flung him over his shoulder and continued sprinting, not daring to look behind him.

But didn't matter. Tina was not behind him. She was actually in front of him. Regan found her hopping off of buildings, jumping to the next one like some revised game of Mario. The woman then sprang up into the air with a single hop, and Regan followed her ascent with panic shrouding his rage.

There it was again, he thought. The same purple lightning that coated her blade along with her armament haki. Regan tore his eyes away from her and continued sprinting, ignoring the bullets that pelted against his back.

Tina brought her sword back down again, and the world rumbled once more. He could feel her conquerors haki trying to drag him into a deep slumber as it did for the surrounding civilians who collapsed, foam building up in their mouths.

Izgrim was knocked out by it too, but Regan managed to persevere despite it trying to wrestle him into unconsciousness. It was like an incorporeal arm tightening around his neck.

After a few more minutes of running and rumbling, Regan had reached the docks. The merchant ship was still there, though without its passengers. Jinkota, Clam, and Randi were nowhere to be found. Perhaps they were still searching for him.

Unfortunately for them, Regan would be doing no searching. He intended to leave them behind. Even Clam. Tina posed too much of a threat, and it was of paramount important to get away from the island as soon as possible.

Regan threw Izgrim on to the ship, paying no care to place him safely. He shrugged off his harsh landing on the ship, and followed after him by jumping up into the air and rolling on board the wooden deck.

Shit! I'm going to have to drive this thing myself!

Regan quickened below deck, and found the wheel he was to drive and a man who was shivering in fear just beside it.

''Clam!?'' Regan called out to him, ripping away from his shuddering. Still, his fear was plain on his face. Something or someone had put the fear of God in his heart. One would perhaps say the fear of Imu.

''Dantes!? Oh, my boy! Where have you been?'' He said, running up to embrace him. There were dried tears upon his cheeks, and his face was red with poignancy.

''Where have I been? Where the hell have you been!? What're you doing just crying next to the wheel?''

''Dantes! It's horrible. I cannot fathom it. Oh, it's horrible!''

''What's horrible? What's so horrible!?'' Regan huffed, grabbing his shirt and shaking him for answers.

''Jinkota, Randi! They--they killed them!''

Regan felt his heart sink to his guts. Not only did his violent outburst cause the death of Rose, but it had also killed Jinkota and Randi, too.

''Where's Rose? And Izgrim? Are they okay? Oh, gods. Please tell me they're ok--''

''Rose is dead.'' Regan said. He did not dare soften his tone nor sweeten his words, he hated that in the real world when the doctors and the nurses gave him vague and filtered answers in response to questions about his debilitating disease. It was always better to tell the truth, even if it would break the man that received it.

Regan could hear Clam's heart shattering in his body. The man slumped to his knees, head in his hands, and proceeded to let out violent cries, howling and clawing at the air.

Regan understood his grief, but the man looked utterly pathetic. He grabbed him by his shirt and forced him to his feet.

"Pay attention! Clam! Out there, just out there, are a bunch of soldiers who want you dead!"

"They want me dead because of you!" Clam shouted at him, the rage creeping past his throat.

''Might be so,'' Regan admitted, meeting his eyes. ''But I'm not the one that killed Jinkota and Randi! Nor am I the one that shot Rose in the head!''

The revelation came at Clam like a whip. He turned away as if the words had struck him, and pressed his palm across his lips.

''Now, are you going to let Izgrim die up there, or are you going to steer this damn ship?''

Clam already knew the answer to that. He had ran away from his friends, scurried away from the marines, and took refuge below the deck of the ship and left behind his search for Regan. He didn't even take it upon him to go back for Rose nor Izgrim.

Clam swallowed his grief and hurried to the wheel. Afterwards, Regan went back up to the deck and found Izgrim rubbing the sleep from his eyes. The ship began rocking and groaning, moving to the swift dance of the wind as it headed out to sea.

Of course, on the oceans, the world was just as perilous as it was on land. There were navy ships following them from behind. Doubtless Tina Lothbrook was on one of them, sword in hand and ready to sink his ship with all the treasure that laid within it.

The treasure!

Regan had completely forgotten about the the treasure he had left behind on Rakers island, including the berries they had gained, and the ship they had constructed. The latter wasn't an issue, truthfully, the rich aristocrat persona had not yet been compromised, and so the ship would continue to be built even in their absence.

But they would never see the money they left behind ever again.

''Dantes, look! It's the navy! What're we going to do!?''

Regan swallowed hard, counting the number of ships that were on their tail. There were four in total. And Regan suspected that they had called for more.

It was perfect for his plan, Regan recalled. So long as Tina wasn't on one of the ships. Though he had forgotten about his money and some of the treasure, Regan had remembered the plan he had made during their journey to Rakers island.

The plan was a farming method that he hoped would work. If it did, it would allow him to progress much, much faster. He could perhaps be even stronger than some of the pirates in the new world if he carried it out for the next two years.

And now, with the marines accosting them, it was the perfect opportunity to put the plan into motion.
