Chapter 28 - The Anchor Between Worlds

The forest felt different now.

Not because it had changed—

But because Haruki had.

Each step forward carried weight.

Not physical weight.

Something deeper.

Awareness.

The snow still crunched beneath their feet.

The wind still whispered through the trees.

The cold still lingered in the air.

But layered over it all—

Were possibilities.

Faint.

Constant.

Haruki saw them whether he wanted to or not.

A step too far.

A branch falling.

Karin slipping.

Raizen stopping.

Small things.

Endless things.

"…You're doing it again."

Karin's voice broke through the quiet.

Haruki blinked.

"…Doing what?"

"…That look."

She gestured vaguely at his eyes.

"…Like you're somewhere else."

He hesitated.

Because she wasn't wrong.

"…It's hard to focus on just one thing," he admitted.

Karin slowed her pace slightly.

"…Then don't."

He frowned.

"…You said that before."

"…Yeah. And you're still not listening."

She stopped walking.

Turning to face him fully.

"…You're trying to handle everything at once."

"…That's why it feels overwhelming."

Haruki looked away.

"…If I don't, I might miss something important."

Karin's expression softened—

But only slightly.

"…And if you try to see everything…"

"…You'll miss what actually matters."

That—

Hit harder than expected.

Raizen, walking ahead, spoke without turning.

"…Control is not about limiting what you see."

"…It's about choosing what you act on."

Haruki's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Choosing…"

Another flicker.

Multiple paths.

One where he steps forward.

One where he stops.

One where he turns.

He took a breath.

And chose.

He kept walking.

The other paths faded.

Not gone—

But quieter.

"…It's working," he said softly.

Karin smirked.

"…Told you."

They continued in silence for a while.

Not uncomfortable.

But thoughtful.

The forest gradually grew denser again.

The air colder.

The light dimmer.

Haruki felt it again.

That distant pull.

The same one from before.

"…It's this way," he said.

Raizen nodded without hesitation.

"…Then lead."

That still felt strange.

Being trusted like that.

But Haruki didn't question it.

Not anymore.

They moved deeper.

And as they did—

The feeling grew stronger.

Not painful.

But persistent.

Like something calling out.

Karin glanced at him.

"…Is it getting clearer?"

Haruki hesitated.

"…Yes…"

"…But also… louder."

"…Louder how?"

He struggled to explain.

"…Like it's not just there anymore…"

"…It's aware."

Karin's expression shifted.

"…You mean it knows we're coming?"

Haruki didn't answer immediately.

Because he didn't want to.

But—

"…Yes."

Silence followed.

Heavier this time.

They stopped near a clearing.

Not large.

But open enough to rest.

Raizen finally turned.

"…We stop here."

Karin dropped to the ground almost immediately.

"…Finally."

Haruki remained standing.

His gaze distant.

Still seeing.

"…Haruki."

Karin's voice was softer now.

"…Sit."

He hesitated—

Then obeyed.

The moment he sat—

The visions surged.

Stronger than before.

Not just possibilities—

But outcomes.

Him standing.

Him falling.

Karin injured.

Raizen gone.

His breathing quickened.

"…It's too much…"

Karin moved closer.

"…Hey."

He didn't respond.

Because he couldn't.

Everything overlapped again.

Too fast.

Too loud.

"…Haruki!"

She grabbed his shoulders.

Firm.

Grounding.

"…Look at me."

He tried.

But the visions interfered.

Two Karins.

Three.

"…Focus."

Her voice cut through everything.

"…Not them."

"…Me."

He forced his eyes to lock onto hers.

Just one version.

Just one.

The others flickered—

Then faded.

Not completely.

But enough.

"…There you go," she said quietly.

His breathing slowed.

"…How did you—"

"…Because I'm real."

A small smile.

"…The rest aren't."

That—

Made something click.

Not everything he saw—

Was equal.

Not everything mattered.

Raizen watched silently.

Then spoke.

"…An anchor."

Haruki looked at him.

"…What?"

"…Every Ganseisha needs one."

"…Something that keeps them grounded."

His gaze shifted slightly toward Karin.

"…Or someone."

Haruki's eyes widened slightly.

Karin rolled her eyes.

"…Don't make it sound like something dramatic."

But she didn't pull away.

Haruki exhaled slowly.

"…An anchor…"

Another flicker.

But weaker now.

Manageable.

"…Thank you," he said quietly.

Karin shrugged.

"…Don't mention it."

Then—

A faint smirk.

"…Just don't lose control again."

He almost smiled.

The forest remained still around them.

But the tension—

Hadn't disappeared.

It lingered.

Waiting.

Haruki looked toward the distance.

That same pull—

Stronger now.

Clearer.

"…It's close."

Raizen stood.

"…Then we move soon."

Karin sighed.

"…Of course we do."

But before they could stand—

Haruki's eyes flickered again.

A vision.

Different this time.

Not chaotic.

Not overlapping.

Just one.

Clear.

Him standing in the clearing.

Alone.

Karin—

Gone.

Raizen—

Nowhere.

And in front of him—

A figure.

Humanoid.

Distorted.

Watching him.

Waiting.

Haruki froze.

"…What… was that…"

Karin noticed immediately.

"…What did you see?"

He hesitated.

Because this felt different.

Not like a possibility.

Not like a fragment.

Like something that would happen.

"…We're not alone," he said quietly.

Raizen's gaze sharpened.

"…Explain."

Haruki looked toward the trees.

"…Something is waiting for us."

The wind shifted.

Subtle.

Cold.

And for a brief moment—

All three of them felt it.

That presence.

Closer than before.

Watching.

Karin stood.

"…Then let's not keep it waiting."

Haruki stood as well.

His eyes steadier now.

Not fully controlled.

But no longer overwhelming.

Raizen turned toward the direction Haruki had been leading them.

"…Stay ready."

They moved again.

Together.

But this time—

Haruki wasn't just following.

He was guiding.

And somewhere ahead—

Something was waiting.

Not a beast.

Not a fragment.

Something else.

Something that understood.
