Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: First hunt in the quiet zone

Morning arrived earlier than usual.

The academy felt different today.

No training sounds.

No casual chatter.

Only footsteps across stone.

Measured.

Uneasy.

Kai stood among the selected students in the open courtyard.

A cold wind passed through the space, brushing against uniforms and carrying dust from the outer fields.

Everyone was already quiet.

Not disciplined quiet.

Uncertain quiet.

Instructor Darius Cole stepped forward.

Same posture.

Same calm face.

But something about his presence made the air feel heavier.

"Prepare yourselves."

A pause.

"You are leaving the academy."

A ripple moved through the group.

Whispers broke instantly.

"…Already?"

"…We just learned mana control…"

"…This can't be serious…"

Darius didn't react.

He continued anyway.

"This is a high-tier F-rank hunt."

Silence returned immediately.

Heavier this time.

Ray leaned slightly toward Kai.

"…That doesn't sound safe."

Kai didn't respond.

His eyes stayed forward.

Focused.

Darius stepped closer.

"Rules are simple."

"One—stay in formation."

"Two—do not overuse mana."

"Three—do not engage targets alone."

A pause.

Then—

"…You are not allowed to die."

His gaze sharpened slightly.

"…Injuries are acceptable."

"…Death is not."

The meaning of that sentence settled heavily over everyone.

No one joked after that.

"Divide into groups."

Students moved hesitantly.

Some formed teams quickly.

Others struggled to find place.

Rex gathered his group without hesitation.

Confident.

Natural leadership.

Ray glanced at Kai.

"…Guess we're together."

Kai nodded once.

"…Yeah."

A voice cut through the group.

Cold.

Flat.

"I don't need a group."

Aeris stood alone near the edge.

Still.

Composed.

Like she had no intention of relying on anyone.

Darius didn't even look at her.

"…She doesn't require one."

That ended the discussion.

They left shortly after.

The academy gates closed behind them with a heavy metallic sound.

The atmosphere changed immediately.

Roads became uneven.

Buildings disappeared.

Trees thickened until sunlight struggled to pass through.

The air cooled.

And grew quieter.

Not peaceful.

Wrong.

Ray noticed it first.

"…It's too quiet out here."

Kai nodded slightly.

His expression didn't change.

But his expression sharpened.

Broken trees appeared along the path.

Deep claw marks in bark and stone.

Sections of ground looked torn apart like something had dragged itself through them.

Ray crouched briefly, touching the soil.

"…This movement pattern isn't normal."

Kai stared at it.

Silent.

Focused.

A dark patch of earth lay ahead.

Dry.

Almost lifeless.

One student whispered:

"…Is that blood?"

No one answered.

Darius raised his hand.

Everyone stopped instantly.

A faint sound passed through the trees.

Soft.

Unclear.

Like movement that didn't want to be heard.

Then—

A flicker between branches.

Gone.

"…Did you see that?" someone muttered.

Ray narrowed his eyes.

"…Yeah."

Kai didn't move.

He was watching something deeper than sight.

The space between motion.

Between presence.

Then it appeared again.

Just for a moment.

A beast.

Lean.

Fast.

Too fast to fully identify.

Then gone.

Another shape followed.

Then another.

Ray exhaled slowly.

"…That's not one."

Kai replied quietly.

"…No."

One student suddenly stepped forward.

Too fast.

Too eager.

"I've got it!"

Before anyone could react—

Darius flicked his fingers slightly.

A controlled force shifted the air.

The student's charge was redirected instantly.

He slammed into the ground instead of the creature's path.

Not injured critically.

Just stunned and forced back into formation.

Darius spoke without raising his voice.

"…You are not allowed to die."

A pause.

"…Injuries are acceptable."

Silence returned immediately.

Ray swallowed slightly.

"…So he's been watching everything."

Kai didn't take his eyes off the forest.

"…Always."

The beasts stepped out more clearly now.

Not attacking.

Observing.

Circling.

Testing.

Three… then four visible shapes between the trees.

Moving together in a loose pattern.

Too coordinated for instinct alone.

A low sound echoed through the forest.

Not a roar.

Not a growl.

Something structured.

Almost deliberate.

Ray muttered under his breath.

"…This isn't what we were told."

Kai's voice was low.

"…No."

Darius remained behind them.

Still calm.

But his presence subtly pressed outward.

A controlled pressure that ensured one thing—

No one would die here.

But no one would leave untested either.

The beasts shifted again.

Closer this time.

Measuring them.

Waiting for weakness.

Kai tightened his hand slightly.

This isn't training anymore.

From deeper within the forest—

A heavier step echoed.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Stronger than the rest.

Ray's expression changed slightly.

"…There's more."

Kai finally spoke.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…There's more than we were told."

The forest fell silent again.

But it wasn't empty silence anymore.

It was waiting. 🔥
