Chapter 50 - Chapter50:The Northern Road

## CHAPTER FIFTY

### The Northern Road

On the twenty-second day north of the Flowing Hand school a message arrived through Cui Shan's relay from Feng Luo.

Not a report. A question.

*When are you coming back north. I have found something in the eastern recovery sections that does not fit the cascade data and Li Shan says it requires the Lost Blade's direct assessment. Also I burned something. Not a building. A field. It was accidental. The directed heat application is still developing. Tell Lin Mei I am sorry about the field.*

Jian Yu read the message twice.

He showed it to Lin Mei.

She read it. Her expression did not change. "Tell him the field can be replanted," she said.

He sent that back.

Feng Luo's response arrived four hours later. *I know it can be replanted. That is not the point. The point is that I burned it. Tell Lin Mei I am sorry about the burning specifically, not about the field.*

Lin Mei read this one too. She was quiet for a moment. Then she said: "Tell him I understand the distinction."

He sent that.

Two days later a message arrived from Xian Yue.

Longer than Feng Luo's. Organized in the specific structured way of a field report — situation, assessment, recommendation, request.

The situation: the eastern liaison office had identified two recovery sections near Dragon Sect's outer boundary where the cascade's clearing had produced an unexpected secondary effect. The spiritual conditions in those sections were not just recovering toward pre-damage levels. They were improving beyond pre-damage levels. Noticeably. The vein network in those sections was denser than the historical records showed it had ever been.

Her assessment: the combination's effect had not simply restored what was lost. In those sections it had done something additional. She did not know what.

Her recommendation: Li Shan needed to look at the cascade data from those sections specifically.

Her request: if Jian Yu and the Lost Blade could pass through Dragon Sect's outer boundary territory on the road north, direct assessment would be more useful than relay data.

He read the message twice.

Then he looked at the map.

The Dragon Sect outer boundary sections Xian Yue described were three days east of their current road north. A detour. Not enormous. Three days east, assessment, then northeast to reach Feng Luo's location.

He showed the message to Lin Mei and Bing Xi.

Lin Mei read it and looked at the map. "Three days east."

"Yes," he said.

"You want to go," she said.

"I want to understand what the combination did beyond what we expected it to do," he said. "The archive should have that. If the effect in those sections is what Xian Yue's description suggests—"

"It changes what we know about the combination's capacity," Bing Xi said. She had been reading the message over Lin Mei's shoulder. "The historical record documented restoration. If the combination also produces improvement beyond the original state in some sections — that is a significant finding."

"Yes," he said.

"Li Shan will want direct Lost Blade data," Lin Mei said.

"Yes," he said.

"And you want to see Xian Yue," Bing Xi said.

He looked at her.

The fractional stillness shift. Four seconds.

"I want to understand the sections," he said.

"Yes," she said. "And you want to see Xian Yue."

He looked at the map. Then at Bing Xi. Then at Lin Mei who was not looking at him because she did not need to look at him to communicate that Bing Xi was correct and she agreed.

"East," he said.

"East," Lin Mei said.

"Three days," Bing Xi said.

He sent a message to Xian Yue through Cui Shan's relay.

*Three days. We'll come through the eastern boundary. Have someone meet us at the road junction.*

Her response came back in two hours.

*I'll meet you myself. There is no one I would trust with the initial Lost Blade assessment except the wielder and the people who understand the archive.*

Jian Yu looked at the message.

Then he looked at the road east and counted the distance in his mind. Three days. The autumn light was already changing toward winter's quality — shorter, sharper, the specific clarity of cold air with no moisture in it.

"She built the eastern liaison office to function without her constant presence," Lin Mei said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"She said so herself," Lin Mei said.

"Yes," he said.

"So she is choosing to meet us herself," Lin Mei said.

"Yes," he said.

"That is a choice," Lin Mei said. "Not a necessity."

"I am aware," he said.

Lin Mei did not say anything further. She picked up her pack.

Bing Xi had already picked up hers. She was looking east with the Frostbite Edge at her hip and the walls present and the specific quality of someone who had been watching something develop for months and had no intention of interfering with it.

He counted the first hundred steps east.

One through nine. Ten through eighteen.

He stopped at eighteen.

Not because he needed to. Because eighteen was where he was and ahead was where he was going.

East. Three days. Xian Yue.

After that — north to Feng Luo. Whatever the field had been about. Whatever didn't fit the cascade data.

After that — wherever the road required.

He kept walking.
