Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Iron Tier

The enrollment spire was a nightmare of bureaucracy.

Kael stood in a line that stretched halfway across the plaza — hundreds of new students shuffled forward in increments measured in minutes, each one funneled through a crystal archway that scanned their cultivation base, talent grade, and biometric data before spitting out a numbered token.

"Vorn, Isabella. Core Formation Rank 8. Flawless Core. Blue Talent."

The attendant — a bored-looking elf with ears that practically touched the ceiling — didn't look up from her tablet as she handed Isabella a bronze token.

"Bronze Tier. Next."

Isabella took the token without expression and moved aside.

"Vorn, Sebastian. Core Formation Rank 5. Flawless Core. Green Talent."

Sebastian puffed up slightly. Green talent was respectable. More than respectable for a former Discard.

"Bronze Tier. Next."

His face fell.

"Wait — Green talent should place me in Silver at minimum—"

"Green talent places you in Bronze. Flawless Core is standard for Green. You have nothing exceptional." The elf finally looked up. "Next."

Sebastian sputtered but moved aside when the line pushed forward.

Kael stepped up.

"Vorn, Kael. Core Formation Rank 7." The Concealment Pendant hummed against his chest, projecting the false reading. "Standard Core. Orange Talent."

The elf's finger hovered over her tablet.

Then stopped.

She looked up.

Her eyes — ancient, slightly glowing, the kind of eyes that had seen centuries — narrowed.

"Iron Tier." She handed him a rusty-red token. "Welcome to the bottom. Try not to die in the first week. Next."

Kael pocketed the token and walked away.

Behind him, Sebastian was laughing.

"Iron Tier. Iron. You're at the very bottom, brother. Below Bronze. Below Rust. You're literally the lowest classification in the academy."

Kael didn't slow down.

"The view's better from below."

"What does that even mean?"

"It means stop talking to me."

Sebastian's laughter followed him across the plaza.

Kael ignored it.

[QUEST COMPLETE — THE PEAK]

System Function Unlocked: Technique Fusion

[TECHNIQUE FUSION — NEW FUNCTION]

Currently available fusions:

- Gravity Blade + Lightning Fang = Unknown (Compatibility: 72%)

- Shadow Step + Gravity Step = Unknown (Compatibility: 58%)

- Mantra of the Void Sovereign + Any Element = Unknown (Compatibility: ???)

Kael scrolled through the notifications as he walked.

Nine thousand two hundred shadow points. A sealed technique fragment. A new system function.

The Iron Tier placement was expected. The Concealment Pendant was doing its job — showing him as Orange talent with a Standard core and Rank 7 cultivation.

Technique Fusion, he thought. Gravity Blade and Lightning Fang. If I combine those...

He filed the idea away for later and focused on his surroundings.

The Iron Tier dormitory was exactly as depressing as the name suggested.

Located on the outermost ring of the city, far from the crystal towers and mana rivers, the dormitory was a squat stone building that looked like it had been constructed as an afterthought. Gray walls. Small windows. A door that barely hung on its hinges.

Kael pushed it open.

Inside was a single room. Bare walls. A bed. A desk. A window overlooking a garbage collection facility.

"How charming," he murmured.

Aria materialized from the shadows in the corner.

Kael didn't flinch. He'd felt her there since the plaza.

"How long have you been following me?"

"Since the landing platform." She was still wearing her mask — standard procedure for public spaces. "The Iron Tier dormitory. Really?"

"Would you prefer the Bronze dormitory?"

"I'd prefer we had separate rooms."

"We do. You're registered as my servant. The servant quarters are in the basement."

Aria's eye twitched.

"I'm not your servant."

"On paper, you are. It's cover. A Core Formation cultivator traveling with a bodyguard looks suspicious. A Core Formation cultivator traveling with a servant looks normal." He sat on the bed. "The basement has better security anyway. Fewer people. More shadows."

Aria said nothing.

Then: "The silver-haired one from the plaza. I found out who he is."

Kael looked up.

"Cassian Vale. Second son of the Vale family. They control temporal research across seven galaxies. His power is Time Manipulation — not full time control, but localized slowing and acceleration. Extremely dangerous in combat."

"The beast summoner?"

"Rooley. No family name. No registered origin. He appeared at enrollment with that starlight fox and no explanation for how he acquired it." Aria paused. "There's another one you should know about."

"Who?"

"Ice Dragon-kin. Name's Karacus. Direct descendant of the Frost Dragon Emperor." She hesitated. "He's Foundation Establishment Rank 9. Nearly Spirit Soul."

Aria sighed.

She melted back into the shadows.

"Basement. Fine. But if there are rats, I'm blaming you."

"There won't be rats."

"How do you know?"

"Because rats have better survival instincts than to live somewhere this depressing."

EVENING — IRON TIER COMMON ROOM

The common room was a shared space at the center of the Iron Tier dormitory. Mismatched furniture. Flickering lights. A vending machine that sold overpriced nutrient bars.

Kael sat in a corner, watching.

Iron Tier students filtered in and out — a mix of species and backgrounds that would have been unthinkable in the Vorn estate.

Nobody talked to anyone, really. Iron Tier was where the unwanted went. The untalented. The impoverished. The political exiles. Nobody here had friends. Nobody here expected to make any.

Kael found it relaxing.

"You're in my seat."

He looked up.

A girl stood over him — human, maybe seventeen, with short-cropped dark hair and yellow eyes that flashed when the light hit them. Lean build. Scarred knuckles. A smirk that looked permanently glued to her face.

"No one was sitting here," Kael said.

"I sat here yesterday. That makes it mine."

"Interesting property law. Does it apply to the whole room, or just that specific chair?"

"Just the chair." She dropped into the chair across from him. "I'm Kira Storm."

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"Should that mean something to me?"

"It should mean I'm the best fighter in Iron Tier, and I don't like strangers in my territory." Her yellow eyes studied him. "You're new here. Even if you are from the Vorn family, if the token shape is anything to go by. What are you even doing here?"

"Existing."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

Kira stared at him.

Then she laughed.

"You've got balls, I'll give you that. Most Iron Tier students would be groveling by now. The Vorn name carries weight even out here."

"I'm not most Iron Tier students."

"Clearly." She leaned back. "Fine. Keep your secrets. But when the ranking tournament happens in two weeks, you're going to have to fight. And when you do, I want to see what makes you think you can sit in my chair."

"I'll add it to my schedule."

"Quite arrogant you are."

"More like being confident in my abilities."

"Same thing when you're wrong."

She stood and walked away, yellow eyes flickering one last time before she disappeared into the corridor.

Kael watched her go.

NIGHT — DORMITORY ROOF

Kael sat on the roof of the Iron Tier dormitory, legs dangling over the edge, looking up at a sky that wasn't his.

The stars were different here. Not just positions — the colors were different. Blues and purples that didn't exist in the Vorn cluster. Nebulae that looked like spilled paint. A distant galaxy that glowed faintly orange, visible even through Athelas's atmosphere.

The seven remaining months on the Iron Body quest were buffer.

Fragmented One.

"Yes?"

The sealed technique fragment requires a specific condition to unlock. The condition is: form a connection with someone whose soul resonates with yours.

"What does that mean?"

I don't know. The fragment is sealed by something outside my parameters. It's not a System lock — it's something older.

"Another mystery."

You collect them like debts.

"Saves interest."

...That doesn't make sense.

"It wasn't meant to."

Kael lay back on the roof and closed his eyes with a smile across his face.

Two weeks until the ranking tournament and he couldn't wait.
