Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: Blood in the Training Yard

Bronze Tier really never learn.

Three weeks after the promotion, they came back. This time, they can in a larger number of twelve; all Core Formation Rank 8 or above. Led by a new face — a tall woman with ice-blue hair and a smile like a knife wound.

"Vorn." She stopped ten meters from the training yard where Kael was running drills with Knox and three other Rust Tier students. "My name is Sloane Blackwood. My father is Chancellor Aldric Blackwood. You broke my cousin's wrist and humiliated five of my family's retainers."

Kael stretched his arms overhead.

"I've broken a lot of wrists. You'll need to be more specific."

"Percival. My cousin." Her smile widened. "He's still in the medical wing. Nerve damage. The healers say his hand will never fully recover."

"Sorry for your loss. That's very tragic."

"I thought so too." She raised her hand. Ice mana swirled between her fingers. "So I brought friends."

The eleven Bronze Tier students spread out in a semicircle.

"Knox." Kael didn't look at the werewolf. "Take the others and leave."

"What? I'm not leaving you to—"

"Go."

"But—"

"Go."

Knox hesitated. Then he grabbed the other Rust Tier students and ran.

Sloane watched them go with mild amusement.

"No witnesses. How convenient." She looked at Kael. "Last chance to beg."

"I don't do begging."

"It's a shame."

She attacked.

Ice erupted from the ground — spikes erupting in a line toward him, each one sharp enough to pierce steel. Kael launched himself sideways, Gravity Step carrying him clear. The spikes shattered against the training yard wall behind him.

The other eleven charged.

Fire and earth and lightning from three directions. Binding chains from the left. A sword-user diving from above. Two more ice manipulators creating a freezing field that would slow his movement.

Kael moved.

He hit the fire user first — a straight punch that crumpled the man's jaw and sent him flying into the ice field. The cold slowed Kael for a fraction of a second.

That fraction was enough for the sword to reach him.

Schwing!

Kael caught the blade between his palms. Lightning erupted from his grip, traveling down the sword and electrocuting the wielder. The man seized and dropped.

Two more attackers closed in.

Kael threw the sword.

It spun through the air like a buzzsaw, catching one attacker across the chest and burying itself in the second's shoulder. Both went down.

Sloane watched with narrowed eyes.

"Rank 7," she said slowly. Ice gathered around her hands. "Why lie about your rank?. Cus that's not what I'm seeing."

"Maybe you need better glasses."

"Maybe you need to stop lying."

She attacked again.

This time, it was personal. Ice lances — dozens of them — materialized from thin air and launched from every direction. No gaps. No escape routes. A killing field of frozen spears.

Kael's gravity flared inward.

He compressed the space around himself into a sphere of absolute gravitational control. The ice lances hit the gravity wall and stopped — suspended in midair, trembling, unable to advance another inch.

Sloane's eyes went wide.

She pushed more power into the lances. They strained against the gravity wall. Cracks appeared.

Kael released the wall.

The ice lances shattered outward like shrapnel. Sloane raised a defensive barrier, but three shards slipped through — one grazing her cheek, one slicing her arm, one embedding itself in her shoulder.

She screamed.

The remaining Bronze Tier students faltered.

Kael didn't give them time to regroup.

Gravity swept the field — a wave of crushing pressure that dropped everyone to their knees. Not enough to injure. Just enough to dominate.

He walked through the prone Bronze Tier students like they were furniture.

Stopped in front of Sloane.

She glared up at him, blood running down her cheek, ice mana flickering weakly around her uninjured hand.

"You'll pay for this," she hissed. "My father—"

"Your father runs a trade empire. I'm not impressed." Kael crouched beside her. "Tell him if he sends anyone else, I won't stop at broken wrists."

He stood and walked away.

Behind him, twelve Bronze Tier students groaned and bled on the training yard stones.

LATER — RUST TIER COMMON ROOM

The common room was packed.

Word had spread through the academy like wildfire. Bronze Tier attacked Rust Tier. Twelve against one. One won.

Kael sat in his corner, ignoring the stares.

Kira dropped into the chair across from him.

"You're bleeding."

He looked down. A shallow cut on his forearm from one of the ice lances. He hadn't noticed.

"It's nothing."

Knox replaced her.

"That was smooth."

The common room buzzed around them. Whispers. Glances. The legend of the Iron Tier boy who fought Bronze Tier and won was growing.

Kael didn't care about the legend.

NIGHT — SHADOW MAZE

Aria waited at the maze entrance.

"Blackwood."

"I know."

"His daughter is in Silver Tier. She didn't attack you directly. She sent Bronze Tier."

"Because she wanted to test me without exposing herself. If I lost, the family loses nothing. If I won, they have data." Kael pulled open the maze door. "It's smart politics. Annoying, but smart."

"The academy instructors are watching."

"Good."

"Good?"

"The more people who see me fight, the harder it is to maintain the disguise."

"You've already lost the disguise. Kira figured out your gravity is Expert-level. Sloane figured it out. The dwarf instructor flagged your mana circulation." Aria fell into step beside him. "The only people who don't know are the ones who aren't paying attention."

"Then I'll stop paying attention to the ones who aren't paying attention."

"That doesn't make sense."

"It doesn't have to. It just has to be confusing enough that they can't build a case."

They entered the maze.

Darkness swallowed them.

Kael moved by shadow — Shadow Step carrying him through the labyrinth in seconds. Aria matched him, her own shadow manipulation keeping pace.
