Chapter 14 - 14.When the light begins to break.

The air felt different.

Heavier.

Not because of the light

But because of what hid beneath it.

Lin Mo stood in the center of the celestial hall, his posture straight, his expression calm… yet something about him no longer fit.

He could feel it.

The way the gazes lingered longer than before.

The way silence followed him wherever he went.

They were watching.

"…You were summoned."

The voice cut through the stillness.

Lin Mo didn't hesitate this time.

"I'm aware."

He stepped forward, each movement measured, controlled.

But beneath that control

His thoughts were anything but steady.

At the far end of the hall, the Heavenly Lord sat upon the throne.

Still.

Unmoving.

Yet his presence alone was enough to silence everything else.

Lin Mo lowered his gaze.

"You called for me."

A pause.

Long enough to feel deliberate.

"…You've been busy," the Heavenly Lord said.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"I've been carrying out my duties."

"…Have you?"

The question was soft.

But it didn't feel like one.

Lin Mo remained silent.

Because he understood

This wasn't a conversation.

It was a test.

The Heavenly Lord's gaze sharpened slightly.

"There have been disturbances in the lower realm."

"I resolved them."

"…Alone?"

A pause.

Lin Mo's fingers curled slightly at his side.

"Yes."

Silence.

The hall grew colder.

"…Interesting."

The word lingered in the air.

Not approving.

Not disapproving.

Just… observing.

Before Lin Mo could respond

A voice broke in.

"He's lying."

Everything stilled.

Lin Mo's breath caught

Just for a moment.

Then

Slowly

He turned.

Lian Hua stepped forward.

Calm.

Composed.

But her eyes

Sharp.

Watching him.

"…Lian Hua," Lin Mo said quietly.

"You shouldn't interrupt."

Her gaze didn't waver.

"…Then you shouldn't lie."

Silence crashed over the hall.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

The Heavenly Lord didn't speak.

But his attention shifted.

Fully.

To Lin Mo.

"…Explain."

The single word carried weight.

Enough to crush anything beneath it.

Lin Mo's heart pounded

But his expression remained steady.

"There's nothing to explain."

"…Isn't there?"

Lian Hua's voice softened.

But it didn't lose its edge.

"I felt it," she continued.

"…That energy."

A pause.

"…It wasn't just corruption."

The room grew colder.

"…It was a demon."

Silence.

Lin Mo said nothing.

Because

He couldn't deny it.

"…And not just any demon," she added quietly.

"…It was him."

That,

That was enough.

The shift in the air was immediate.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

The Heavenly Lord stood.

Slowly.

"…Lin Mo."

His voice echoed through the hall.

"…Is this true?"

For a moment

Time seemed to stop.

Every gaze fixed on him.

Every breath held.

Waiting.

Lin Mo lowered his gaze.

"…I encountered a demon."

"…And?"

Silence.

His throat tightened.

"…I handled it."

The answer came carefully.

Measured.

Incomplete.

The Heavenly Lord stepped down from the throne.

Each step echoed.

Heavy.

"…You continue to choose your words carefully."

A pause.

"…But not truthfully."

Lin Mo stilled.

For the first time

There was no immediate response.

"…You hesitate," the Heavenly Lord continued.

"…That alone is enough."

The words struck deeper than anything else.

Because they were true.

Lin Mo's fingers tightened.

"…I fulfilled my duty."

The Heavenly Lord stopped in front of him.

Close enough that the pressure in the air became suffocating.

"…And yet," he said softly,

"…you return changed."

Silence.

"…Why?"

The question wasn't loud.

But it demanded an answer.

Lin Mo lifted his gaze slightly.

And for a moment

He almost spoke the truth.

But

He didn't.

"…I don't know what you mean."

A pause.

Then

"…You will."

The Heavenly Lord turned away.

"…Watch him."

The command was simple.

But absolute.

The entire hall shifted.

Lin Mo felt it immediately.

The weight.

The attention.

The suspicion.

It was no longer hidden.

He had been marked.

Later

The halls felt colder than ever.

Lin Mo walked alone, his steps slower now.

Not because he was tired

But because he was thinking.

"…You should have told the truth."

The voice came quietly.

Lian Hua.

He stopped.

"…Why did you do that?" he asked without turning.

A pause.

"…Because you wouldn't."

Silence.

"…You're putting yourself in danger."

"So are you."

She stepped closer.

"…Do you think they didn't notice?"

Lin Mo didn't respond.

"…You hesitated."

The words came softly.

"…That's all it takes."

A pause.

"…You're already under suspicion."

Lin Mo exhaled slowly.

"…Then you've made it worse."

Silence.

"…No," Lian Hua said quietly.

"…I made it visible."

He turned this time.

"…Why?"

Her gaze met his.

Steady.

"…Because hidden things are more dangerous."

A pause.

"…Including you."

The words lingered.

Unsettling.

Unavoidable.

Before he could respond

A familiar presence brushed against his senses.

Faint.

But there.

Lin Mo stilled.

"…He's here again, isn't he?"

Lian Hua's voice dropped.

Careful.

Lin Mo didn't answer.

Because

He didn't need to.

The silence said enough.

Her expression hardened slightly.

"…You're going to him."

"…No."

But even as he said it

He was already turning away.

Lian Hua watched him go.

"…Then why are you leaving?"

He didn't answer.

Because

He didn't have one.

The shadows welcomed him this time.

Like they had been waiting.

"…You look like you've been caught."

Mo Ran's voice came from the darkness.

Low.

Amused.

Lin Mo didn't react.

"…You shouldn't be here."

"…You say that every time."

Mo Ran stepped forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

His gaze scanned Lin Mo

Noticing everything.

"…They know."

Lin Mo's breath stilled.

"…Not everything."

"…But enough."

Silence.

Mo Ran stepped closer.

"…And you still came."

A pause.

Lin Mo looked at him.

"…So did you."

A faint smirk appeared.

"…I never left."

The words lingered.

Dangerous.

Familiar.

Lin Mo exhaled slowly.

"…You need to stay away."

"…From you?"

A step closer.

"…Or from them?"

Silence.

Because

He didn't know the answer.

Mo Ran's gaze softened

Just slightly.

"…You're starting to break."

Lin Mo frowned.

"…I'm not."

"…You are."

A pause.

"…And this time…"

Mo Ran's voice dropped.

"…you won't be able to hide it."

Silence settled between them.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Because deep down

They both knew,

He was right.
