Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: The Beginning of the Cost

The void didn't return to normal.

Because there was no "normal" anymore.

Kael stood still long after the other version of himself disappeared.

Not thinking.

Not moving.

Just… existing.

"…You passed," she said quietly.

Kael exhaled.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…Didn't feel like winning."

"…It wasn't."

That—

Made sense.

Because nothing about this felt like victory.

Not when the choice—

Still lingered.

Not when the weight of it—

Hadn't left him.

"…It's starting," she said.

Kael frowned slightly.

"…What is?"

Silence.

Then—

"…The cost."

That word again.

Kael looked at his hand.

Nothing looked different.

No visible change.

No obvious damage.

"…I don't feel anything."

"…You will."

That wasn't comforting.

The void began to fade.

Not breaking.

Not collapsing.

Just… dissolving.

Like it had served its purpose.

The darkness peeled away—

Layer by layer.

Until—

The world returned.

The forest.

But not the same one.

Kael noticed it instantly.

"…This isn't where we were."

"…No."

The trees were taller.

Older.

The air—

Heavier.

More real.

"…We moved."

"…Yes."

A pause.

"…Further than before."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…So this is progress."

"…Yes."

"…Then why does it feel worse?"

Silence.

"…Because it is."

A sound echoed.

Not distant.

Not hidden.

Close.

Too close.

Kael turned instantly.

"…That's not subtle."

"…No."

The trees ahead shifted.

Not unnaturally.

Not distorted.

Just… moving.

And then—

It stepped out.

A creature.

But not like before.

Not twisted.

Not incomplete.

Perfect.

Alive.

And powerful.

Kael's body tensed.

"…That's different."

"…Yes."

"…Stronger?"

"…Much."

That—

Was obvious.

The creature's presence alone—

Pressed against him.

Not like the void.

Not like the correction units.

This—

Was real strength.

"…So this is what happens after the tests," Kael muttered.

"…Yes."

"…Now the world sends something that can actually kill me."

"…Yes."

Kael smirked slightly.

"…Good."

But this time—

Even he knew—

This wasn't something to take lightly.

The creature moved.

Fast.

Not unpredictable.

Not distorted.

Just—

Overwhelming.

Kael barely reacted.

Dodging—

But just barely.

The impact behind him—

Shattered the ground.

"…That's not normal."

"…No."

The creature didn't pause.

Didn't hesitate.

It attacked again.

Faster.

Stronger.

Kael stepped back—

Blocking—

The impact sent him sliding.

"…Tch—!"

His arms burned.

That—

Was raw force.

"…It's not adapting…"

"…No."

"…It's just stronger."

"…Yes."

Kael steadied himself.

"…So this is the next stage."

No more tricks.

No more tests.

Just—

Power.

The creature charged again.

This time—

Kael didn't dodge.

He stepped forward.

Meeting it head-on.

Impact.

The force shook the ground.

But this time—

He held.

"…Not bad…"

He muttered.

Then—

He moved.

Not reacting.

Not chasing.

Controlling.

He shifted—

Redirected—

Struck.

The creature staggered slightly.

"…That worked."

"…Don't get overconfident."

"…I won't."

Because even that—

Wasn't enough.

The creature roared—

And surged again.

Stronger.

Faster.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…Alright…"

He raised his hand.

Focused.

[Devour Activated]

The connection formed.

But this time—

Something felt off.

"…What…?"

The connection—

Was unstable.

Flickering.

Weaker.

"…That's new."

"…Yes."

Her voice was sharp now.

"…The cost."

Kael's eyes widened slightly.

"…You're kidding."

"…No."

The creature attacked again.

Kael dodged—

Barely.

"…So I get stronger…"

"…And weaker at the same time?"

"…Yes."

That—

Was a problem.

A big one.

"…Figures."

He gritted his teeth.

"…Then I'll just have to adjust."

No relying on the system.

No overwhelming force.

Just—

Skill.

Control.

Choice.

The creature charged again.

Kael moved.

Not faster.

Not stronger.

Smarter.

He dodged—

Shifted—

Struck—

Each movement precise.

Each action intentional.

No waste.

No panic.

The fight changed.

From brute force—

To something else.

And slowly—

Kael gained ground.

Not by overpowering—

But outplaying.

The creature roared again—

But this time—

It missed.

Kael stepped in—

Struck—

A clean hit.

The creature staggered.

"…There we go…"

Kael exhaled.

"…That's the way."

Another strike.

Another hit.

The creature weakened.

Not broken—

But losing.

Kael raised his hand again.

Focused—

Careful—

[Devour… Partial Activation]

This time—

It worked.

Not fully.

But enough.

The creature froze—

Just for a moment.

That was all he needed.

Kael stepped in—

And struck.

The creature collapsed.

Gone.

Silence returned.

Kael stood still.

Breathing steady.

"…That was harder."

"…Yes."

"…And it's only going to get worse."

"…Yes."

He looked at his hand again.

The system flickered faintly.

Unstable.

Limited.

"…So this is the price."

"…One of them."

Kael smirked faintly.

"…Of course it is."

Because nothing came free.

Not power.

Not change.

Not even a different future.

Everything—

Had a cost.

And now—

He had started paying it.

But even so—

He stepped forward.

Without hesitation.

Because no matter what it took—

He would keep going.

Until the end changed.

No matter the price.
