Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: The Path That Demands More

The forest didn't change.

But Kael did.

He walked slower now.

Not because he was tired.

But because every step—

Meant something.

"…You're thinking too much," she said.

Kael didn't respond immediately.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…I kind of have to."

Silence settled between them.

Not tense.

Not calm.

Just… heavy.

Because both of them knew—

What came next wouldn't be easier.

"…That wasn't just an illusion," Kael said after a while.

"…No."

"…It knew exactly what to show me."

"…Yes."

"…So it's watching again."

A pause.

"…Not the same way."

Kael frowned slightly.

"…Then what way?"

Silence.

Then—

"…Closer."

That wasn't reassuring.

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…Good."

She glanced at him.

"…You don't mean that."

"…No."

A faint smirk touched his lips.

"…But I'm getting used to it."

They continued forward.

The trees thinned gradually.

The air shifted again.

Not colder.

Not heavier.

Sharper.

Kael felt it instantly.

"…Something's ahead."

"…Yes."

"…Stronger?"

"…Different."

That word again.

Kael adjusted his stance slightly.

Not outwardly obvious—

But ready.

Because "different" had never meant "safe."

The forest opened.

Into a clearing.

But not an empty one.

At the center—

A structure stood.

Simple.

But unnatural.

A tall, black pillar.

Smooth.

Perfect.

No markings.

No energy radiating from it.

Just—

There.

Kael stopped.

"…That's new."

"…Yes."

"…And I'm guessing it's not friendly."

"…No."

He stepped closer.

Slowly.

The pillar didn't react.

Didn't move.

Didn't change.

But the closer he got—

The more something pressed against him.

Not force.

Not pressure.

Expectation.

"…I don't like this," Kael muttered.

"…You shouldn't."

He stopped a few steps away.

Eyes locked on it.

"…What is it?"

Silence.

Then—

"…A checkpoint."

Kael blinked.

"…A what?"

"…A place where the path decides something."

"…That sounds vague."

"…It is."

Kael sighed.

"…Of course it is."

He circled it slowly.

No change.

No reaction.

"…So what does it decide?"

A pause.

"…How much you're willing to give."

That—

Was bad.

Kael stopped.

Looked at it again.

"…And if I don't give anything?"

"…You don't pass."

"…And if I walk away?"

"…You don't move forward."

Silence.

"…So it's a forced choice."

"…Yes."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…I'm starting to hate this place."

"…You should have started earlier."

He stepped closer.

Right in front of the pillar now.

"…Alright…"

His voice was steady.

"…What do you want?"

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then—

The pillar responded.

Not with sound.

Not with movement.

But directly—

Inside his mind.

[Offer Detected]

[Exchange Required]

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…Of course it is."

The system flickered faintly.

Unstable.

Strained.

Then—

Words formed.

[Select Payment]

Kael's expression darkened.

"…Payment…"

"…Don't rush," she said quietly.

"…You won't get this back."

"…Yeah…"

He already knew that.

Options appeared.

Not visually.

But mentally.

Clear.

Defined.

And each one—

Felt real.

[Memory]

[Emotion]

[Time]

[Potential]

Kael's breath slowed.

"…You've got to be kidding me."

"…No."

"…They're all bad."

"…Yes."

He focused on the first.

Memory.

"…I already lost some…"

"…Yes."

"…If I give more…"

"…You lose more."

Kael moved to the next.

Emotion.

His chest tightened slightly.

"…That's worse."

"…Yes."

"…If I lose that…"

"…You won't feel what you're losing."

That—

Was terrifying.

Next.

Time.

"…What does that mean?"

"…Your lifespan."

"…Figures."

And finally—

Potential.

Kael frowned.

"…Explain that one."

A pause.

"…Your future growth."

"…So I get weaker later?"

"…You get limited."

Silence.

"…All of these suck."

"…Yes."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…So I just pick how I want to lose."

"…Yes."

He looked at the pillar.

Unmoving.

Uncaring.

Waiting.

"…And if I refuse?"

"…You stay here."

"…Forever?"

"…Until you choose."

That—

Wasn't a real option.

Kael closed his eyes.

Just for a moment.

Thinking.

Not about survival.

Not about power.

But about the future.

What he needed.

What he could afford to lose.

And what he couldn't.

He opened his eyes.

Clear.

Decided.

"…Alright."

His voice was calm.

"…I choose—"

He paused.

Not from doubt.

But from understanding.

Because this—

Would define everything after.

"…Let's see if this path…"

His gaze hardened.

"…Is worth it."

The pillar waited.

And Kael—

Made his choice.
