Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: The One Who Stands at the End

The figure didn't move.

Not when Kael stepped forward.

Not when the path extended beneath his feet.

It simply stood there.

Waiting.

Kael slowed his pace.

Not out of fear—

But awareness.

Because this felt different.

Not like a test.

Not like an enemy.

Something else.

"…It's not reacting," Kael said quietly.

"…No."

Her voice was tense now.

"…It's observing."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…Everything observes."

"…Not like this."

That—

Got his attention.

He took another step.

Closer.

The figure became clearer.

Humanoid.

Tall.

Still.

But unlike the others—

It wasn't empty.

It had presence.

Heavy.

Ancient.

And strangely—

Familiar.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…I've seen you before."

The figure tilted its head slightly.

Then—

It spoke.

"…Yes."

Kael froze.

Not because it spoke—

But because—

That voice.

"…No way…"

It was his.

Not similar.

Not close.

The same.

"…That's impossible."

"…Is it?"

The figure stepped forward.

And now—

Kael saw its face.

His face.

Older.

Sharper.

Colder.

But unmistakable.

"…You're me."

"…Yes."

Silence.

Heavy.

Still.

"…Future me?"

"…No."

A pause.

"…A possibility."

That—

Was worse.

Kael's expression hardened.

"…So another version that failed?"

"…No."

The figure's gaze sharpened.

"…One that succeeded."

Everything went still.

"…Succeeded?"

"…Yes."

"…At what?"

A pause.

"…Surviving."

That answer—

Wasn't right.

"…That's it?"

"…Yes."

Kael frowned.

"…That's not enough."

"…It was."

Silence.

Kael stepped closer.

"…Then why are you here?"

"…To see if you can do better."

"…Better than surviving?"

"…Better than me."

The air grew heavier.

Not from power.

From meaning.

Kael stared at him.

"…If you succeeded…"

A pause.

"…Then why does everything still end?"

The other Kael didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"…Because survival isn't victory."

That—

Hit.

Hard.

"…So you lived…"

"…And lost everything."

"…Yes."

Silence.

Kael's jaw tightened.

"…Then what's the point of you?"

The other Kael stepped forward.

"…To show you the cost."

A pause.

"…Of choosing wrong."

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…And what did you choose?"

Silence.

Then—

"…Myself."

That word—

Echoed.

"…So you chose to live…"

"…At the cost of everything else."

"…Yes."

Kael clenched his fist.

"…And you're telling me not to do that."

"…No."

A pause.

"…I'm telling you that you will."

That—

Was a challenge.

Kael smirked faintly.

"…You sound pretty confident."

"…Because I've seen this before."

"…And?"

"…You always choose the same way."

Silence.

Kael stepped forward again.

Now—

Only a few steps away.

"…Then why am I different now?"

The other Kael's gaze didn't waver.

"…You aren't."

"…I've already made different choices."

"…Small ones."

A pause.

"…They don't matter."

Kael's expression darkened.

"…They do."

"…No."

The voice was calm.

Certain.

"…Because when it matters…"

A pause.

"…You will hesitate."

"…And then you will choose yourself."

Silence.

That—

Was the real test.

Not power.

Not skill.

Choice.

"…Then why are you here?" Kael asked again.

"…To stop you."

Kael blinked.

"…What?"

"…If you follow the same path…"

A pause.

"…Then everything ends the same way."

"…So you're going to kill me?"

"…If necessary."

Kael laughed.

"…That's ironic."

"…Yes."

The other Kael stepped closer.

Now—

Face to face.

"…You don't understand yet."

"…Then explain."

A pause.

"…You think this is about becoming stronger."

"…It's not."

"…You think this is about winning."

"…It's not."

"…This is about sacrifice."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…I know that."

"…No."

The voice sharpened slightly.

"…You don't."

A pause.

"…Because when the time comes…"

"…You won't be able to give up what matters."

Silence.

Kael didn't respond.

Because—

Deep down—

He knew.

That might be true.

"…So that's it?"

He said quietly.

"…You're here to test me?"

"…No."

A pause.

"…I'm here to replace you."

The air froze.

"…What?"

"…If you fail…"

The other Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…I take your place."

That—

Was not expected.

"…That's not how this works."

"…It is now."

Silence.

Kael exhaled slowly.

Then—

He smiled.

Not mockingly.

Not arrogantly.

Just—

Calm.

"…Then I guess I can't lose."

The other Kael didn't react.

"…You already have."

"…Not this time."

A pause.

"…That's what you said before."

Kael raised his hand.

Not to attack.

Not to defend.

Just—

Ready.

"…Then watch closely."

Because this time—

He wasn't going to follow the same path.

Not the easy one.

Not the safe one.

But something else.

Something—

Opposite.

The path beneath them trembled.

The void shifted.

And for the first time—

Two versions of the same existence—

Stood against each other.

Not for power.

Not for survival.

But for the right—

To decide the future.
