She scrunched her nose with distaste. "They kept me on that poison for so long my wolf stopped responding entirely. Eventually they told me she had died and took me off of it."
Cel came forward sharply, her attention fixed. "Something is deeper within her. Get closer to her, Nova."
I do not think she will allow that, I warned.
"Do it," Cel said firmly.
Fine. I muttered at her.
"May I try something?" I said, keeping my voice as gentle as I could. "I will not touch you or hurt you, I give you my word. If I do anything you do not like, feel free to throw a lamp at my head too. My wolf is simply very interested in something and would like to get a little closer."
Calida watched me with deep suspicion. I waited without moving, giving her all the time she needed. After a long minute she gave the smallest nod, so slight I would have missed it if I had not been watching her closely.
