I waited.
My heartbeat was so loud in my own ears that I could barely track anything else. Imani leaned closer over Phoenix's body, her hands moving carefully and methodically across his chest and shoulder, reading what she found there with the focused attention of someone who knew what she was looking for.
The blood was rushing through my skull. The ringing in my ears was getting worse with every second that passed without an answer.
I looked up at the moon and asked without words for any sign at all. Any indication that this was not going to be the worst night of my life.
Imani sat back. Her shoulders dropped.
