Chapter 32 - Goblin

The rustle of leaves, the distant call of a bird, the whisper of the wind through the branches. All blended into a symphony of nature.

Then, cutting through the natural chorus. A mysterious voice entered his ear. It was unlike any sound he had ever heard in the forest.

It was not the growl or howl of a beast, nor the rustling caused by the wind or animals. This voice was otherworldly, low, guttural, and filled with a chilling resonance that sent a shiver down his spine.

Touji's eyes snapped open. He was certain now: this was no ordinary sound. It was the voice of a monster, a goblin perhaps, lurking unseen in the depths of Aokigahara.

At first, Touji had been skeptical of the rumors whispered by hikers. They claimed to have heard strange, unearthly sounds in the forest.

Many dismissed these tales as superstition or the product of overactive imaginations. The voice was said to be that of a goblin, a creature neither beast nor human, haunting the shadows of the woods.

But now, standing alone amidst the ancient trees, Touji felt the weight of those stories pressing down on him. The voice was real. The forest held secrets darker than mere human despair. And somewhere within its tangled depths, the goblin waited.

The sun was beginning its slow descent behind the mountains as a group of hikers made their way down the rugged trails. Among them was a solitary figure who, weary from the climb, sought solace at the nearby Rengeki Temple.

The temple, nestled at the forest's edge, was a place of quiet reflection and spiritual refuge.

Inside the temple, Touji Ito sat in deep meditation. His hands rhythmically stroke the muyu. A wooden percussion instrument used to maintain focus and rhythm during his practice.

The gentle, steady sound echoed softly through the serene courtyard. It blended with the rustling leaves and distant bird calls.

The hiker approached the temple with reverence, bowing briefly before kneeling to offer a prayer. After a moment of silent reflection, he rose and approached Touji, who had just concluded a cycle of meditation.

The hiker began hesitantly. "Sensei, may I ask something?"

Touji opened his eyes slowly. His gaze was calm and inviting. He replied. "Just say."

The hiker's voice lowered, tinged with uncertainty. "I heard a strange sound while in the forest. I assure you that it's not the sound of a beast. Do you know what sound it is? Maybe it is the sound of a monster or something?"

Touji considered the question thoughtfully. Though the forest was steeped in legends of goblins and spirits, he had yet to fully embrace such tales. Instead, he believed the sound was a manifestation of human emotion.

Touji explained gently. "Sometimes humans hear a sound. Yet it's not familiar. It probably comes from the human heart. If the voice sound is creepy, it means he is scared."

The hiker nodded slowly, absorbing the monk's words. "So, it means my hallucination. I don't feel that I'm the one who heard that strange voice."

Touji smiled kindly. "Don't let it continue to drown in fear. It's not good to have bad thoughts. Buddha bless you."

"Okay, thank you Sensei." The hiker said. He bowed respectfully before turning to leave the temple.

As the hiker's footsteps faded, Touji remained seated, reflecting on the encounter. Though he had heard complaints about strange sounds in the forest before. He had never given them much credence. To him, these voices were echoes of human fear and sorrow, not the cries of monsters.

Yet, deep within, a small seed of doubt had been planted. A whisper that perhaps the forest held more mysteries than he had imagined.

The phone was a chilling clue. A proof that someone had been in distress within the depths of Aokigahara. The officers, along with Touji, set out to investigate the forest, hoping to uncover the fate of the phone's owner and any other signs of trouble.

At first, the prevailing theory was that a person who disguised himself as a monster, was deliberately scaring visitors to the forest. The idea seemed plausible, someone playing a cruel prank or perhaps a criminal using fear as a cover for dark deeds.

However, as their search deepened, the reality proved far stranger and more terrifying. There was no human culprit behind the eerie sounds and disappearances. Instead, the forest was home to something far more sinister, a real monster.

Despite their thorough search, the team found no trace of any criminals or pranksters. But one officer, who had been patrolling a remote section of the forest. A chilling encounter was reported.

He claimed to have seen a massive, terrifying creature lurking among the trees. The officer was fortunate. The creature had not noticed his hiding place, allowing him to escape unharmed.

The ranger was adamant about what he had seen. He said. His voice trembled with fear.

"It was a goblin. I'm sure of it."

The other rangers were stunned. The word 'goblin' sounded like something out of folklore, not a real explanation for the disappearances.

They had assumed the missing people were victims of criminals, not supernatural beings.

"Goblin? ... Are you sure it wasn't just someone playing a trick?" One ranger repeated skeptically.

"There was a goblin that appeared. I can hear his voice."

Touji Ito explained to the skeptical rangers that the goblin was not merely a creature of myth but a being from the Immortal realm. Because of this connection, its presence could be sensed. Its voice was heard by those in the human realm, except, of course, by the goblin's own soul, which remained hidden.

"Sensei, are you sure that it is a goblin? Not a criminal?" One ranger asked.

Touji shook his head solemnly. "That's right." He paused for a moment. "Because I don't have exorcism skills so there is nothing I can do. The only way is to ask the exorcist."

For a long time, Touji had been skeptical of the stories about strange voices and disappearances in the forest. He had thought them to be hallucinations or exaggerations fairy tales spun by frightened hikers or those seeking attention.

But after witnessing the terrifying creature with his own eyes, Touji's doubts vanished. The goblin was real. And it was a threat that could no longer be ignored.

Recognizing the danger, Touji made the difficult decision to call for an exorcist, someone with the spiritual power to rid the forest of these malevolent beings.

The monks at Rengeki Temple lacked the necessary skills to perform such rites. Without intervention, more souls would be lost.

Touji urged the forest officials. "Please call an exorcist to get rid of the goblins in this forest."

While waiting for the exorcist's arrival, Touji and the other monks dedicated themselves to prayer. Their prayers formed a spiritual barrier, limiting the goblin's movements and preventing it from leaving the forest.

The monks worked in shifts, maintaining a constant vigil deep within the woods. Their collective faith and determination created a shield of protection, ensuring that no more visitors disappeared without a trace.
