Chapter 31 - Vanishing

Rhenho saw a large shadow behind Yasu, which had disappeared. She was relieved about it.

But it was not enough. They were still cautious and sought the truth behind.

Yasu pushed Rhenho to walk in the front. They would investigate the source of the strange noise. Heart pounding, Rhenho stepped cautiously behind Yasu. She held tightly to her friend's hand for courage.

Together, they took a tentative step forward, their senses heightened. Every rustle and whisper amplified in the stillness. The forest held its secrets close. But the two friends were determined to uncover the truth whether it was a creature of legend or merely the tricks of the forest.

After a few minutes of walking through the dense, shadowy forest, a massive silhouette suddenly emerged between the gnarled trees.

The air grew thick with tension as Rhenho and Yasu froze. Their eyes were widening in terror as they looked up.

There, standing before them in the dim moonlight, was a large creature, hulking and grotesque. Its twisted form was covered in coarse hair. Mottled skin that seemed almost to ripple with unnatural energy.

Jagged teeth glinted in the faint light. And its eyes burned with a malevolent intelligence that sent a shiver down their spines.

"That's a goblin..." Rhenho breathed. Her body frozen in place, heart pounding so loudly she feared it might give them away.

Yasu's breath hitched, and she took a slow, cautious step backward. Her voice was trembling with fear. "Rhen chan, we need to get out of here."

"Yasu chan... what should we do?" Rhenho's voice quivered with fear.

"We should run as fast as we can. One... two... three..." Yasu counted down.

On the count of three, they bolted through the forest, branches whipping past their faces and snagging at their clothes. The ground beneath their feet was uneven and littered with roots. But adrenaline pushed them forward faster than they thought possible.

Nevertheless, the goblin was fast, unnaturally fast. Its heavy limbs moved with terrifying speed and agility, closing the distance between them with every pounding step. The creature's guttural growls echoed through the trees. A chilling soundtrack to their desperate flight.

Suddenly, it was right in front of them. Its grotesque face inches from theirs. Eyes blazing with hunger and malice.

They screamed, a raw, primal sound born of pure panic. Their senses were overwhelmed; there was no plan, no strategy, only the desperate hope to survive.

Branches scratched their skin, leaves filled their mouths. And their lungs burned as they pushed their bodies to the limit.

The forest seemed to close in around them, the shadows alive with menace. Every heartbeat was a countdown, every breath a prayer.

Touji Ito was a serene monk known for his deep meditation practices. He sat quietly in the tranquil halls of Rengeji Temple.

His mind was calm, his breath steady, when suddenly a piercing scream shattered the silence. The sound was raw, desperate, echoing through the stillness like a cry for help.

Instantly, Touji ended his meditation, his senses alert. He looked up. He murmured to himself, a flicker of concern crossing his calm demeanor. "It seems like someone screams. It's from the Aokigahara forest."

Without hesitation, Touji rose and left the temple. His robes flew as he made his way toward the forest. The dense woods of Aokigahara were known for their eerie silence and dark history. But the monk's resolve was unwavering.

Before entering the forest, Touji stopped at the nearby ranger station. The door creaked open, and a mountain ranger looked up. They were surprised to see the monk. The ranger asked politely.

"Sensei, it's getting late. Can I help you?"

Touji bowed slightly. "I just heard a scream. It seems like it's coming from the forest. I feel unease, thus I come here. "

The ranger's brow furrowed. He said, his voice tinged with doubt. "I don't hear someone scream."

Despite the ranger's words, Touji's intuition told him otherwise. "I'm sure there is a scream. That's why I came to check what happened in the forest."

The ranger hesitated, then nodded. "It's getting late, let me accompany you."

Together, they ventured into the forest. The thick canopy swallowed the fading light. The air grew cooler and heavier. As if the forest itself was holding its breath.

For half an hour, they moved cautiously. Their eyes scanned the underbrush and their ears strained for any sign of distress.

Suddenly, the ranger's foot caught on something. Looking down, they found a phone lying face-up on the ground.

Touji picked it up carefully. The screen was lit. The camera was still recording. "It seems like the owner forgot to turn off the phone. The camera is running still."

They watched the video, which showed only the ground, twisting roots, and fallen leaves. But the shaky footage and muffled sounds hinted at a struggle. It was obvious something terrible had happened.

"That means the scream came from the owner of this phone." Touji said solemnly. There was no time to waste; the owner was likely in danger or worse.

The ranger quickly pulled out his phone. "Sensei, let me contact the family of this owner and call the police."

Touji nodded, his face grave. "The forest is dangerous. Can you close it temporarily?"

"Got it." The ranger agreed without hesitation.

As they left the forest, Touji's mind was heavy with the weight of the unseen tragedies hidden behind. The scream was a stark reminder that Aokigahara held many secrets, some desperate, some deadly.

The forest would be closed for now, but the echoes of that scream would linger in Touji's heart. It urged vigilance and compassion for those lost in the shadows.

Meanwhile, Touji Ito moved silently through the dense undergrowth of Aokigahara forest. His eyes scanned the shadows and his senses heightened to every subtle sound.

The forest was thick with ancient trees. Their twisted branches weaved a canopy that filtered the fading light into eerie patterns on the ground. The air was heavy with the scent of moss and damp earth. An unsettling stillness seemed to press down on everything around him.

Touji's heart was steady, but his mind was restless. He hoped to find any clue, any sign, that could explain the sudden disappearance of the phone's owner, who had vanished without a trace. The forest was known for swallowing travelers whole. But this time, Touji sensed something more sinister at play.

He closed his eyes, seeking to quiet the noise of the world and attune himself to the deeper rhythms of the forest. In this meditative state, his hearing sharpened. The faintest sounds became clear.
