"Now that's more like it!" He proclaimed loudly, and before their very eyes, he transformed. His claws extended, and saliva dropped from his mouth as his fangs lengthened from his mouth.
Dark fur emerged from his body, and he got even taller than the mysterious lady.
"Stand back and don't interfere."
Her voice echoed in his mind, making Evans alarmed. He knew he was the one referred to, so he didn't say a word. He picked up his glasses from the floor and moved away from them instantly.
She lunged forward in a blur of motion, her claws slashing through the air, but the man dodged her attack. Before he could regain his stamina, her claws slashed through his chest, and he countered instantly.
His blow aimed at her head, but she blocked it. The impact echoed through the ground. At that moment,
Evans knew this was not his fight. It was a war.
She spun, twisting her body mid-air, and her claws struck his chest...this time it connected. A wave of fear washed across Evans' body as blood splattered across the cracked ground.
The man staggered back, his grin faded for the first time. "Impressive...for a woman. You're a rogue, aren't you?"
She crouched like a waiting wolf, wanting to pounce on its prey. Her fingers dug into the ground while her eyes became sharper. "Two...options...Leave or die by my claws," she whispered faintly.
"I'd rather watch both of you die by my claws," he growled back.
She charged again, but he grabbed her arm mid-strike and slammed her hard on the ground. Evans' heart skipped a beat.
She didn't stay down; instead, she snarled at him and drove her claws into his side. He let out a growl of pain, and they separated briefly, their eyes locked on each other. Blood dripped from both of them, and tension filled the air.
Then they moved again!
She lunged at him, aiming at his throat. He tried to block it, but it was too late. She slashed through his defense brutally. Her eyes gleamed with beastliness, but the man's claws stabbed her in the arm.
A shriek escaped her throat.
Birds soared from the nearby trees; their cries filled the air.
Evans watched as her strength faltered. His heart raced in his chest. She told him to stay still, but he couldn't watch her dying in his hands. He looked around very quickly, then saw a piece of the broken glass from his window on the floor.
Without hesitation, he picked it up and walked to the back of the man. As Evans walked up to the man, the mysterious girl's gaze met his. She shook her head slightly, but Evans placed a finger on his lips, making a gesture to her to stay quiet.
As he reached the man, he raised the glass in the air to strike him, but a claw extended and struck him in the stomach. Evans gasped as he lowered his gaze to his stomach...he was bleeding rapidly.
"You think I don't have eyes at the back of my head?" The deep voice said.
The mysterious girl's eyes widened.
Without warning, she drove her claw into his chest repeatedly, without mercy. The man's body went still, and his eyes widened, then they dimmed. She ripped her hand free from his body, his still pumping heart in her hand.
He collapsed, while Evans' knees gave way to the floor. She also fell on the floor, while the man's heart dropped to the ground.
The man was dead.
The night became quiet, and the birds seemed to go back to their various nests quietly.
Blood dripped heavily from her side. The wounds on both her body and Evans' were deep.
Evans placed his hand on his stomach and staggered to her even though the pain slowed him down.
"Are...are you okay?"
Her transformation began. Her glowing eyes returned to normal, and her claws retracted. She was back in her human form slowly and painfully.
"I told you to stay still," she muttered softly.
"I am sorry, but I couldn't watch lazily...I will be fine. We have to worry about you. My wounds heal faster than you know," Evans replied, his tone laced with fright as he took her in his arms.
She looked up at him, her breathing uneven. "Don't do that...again...You are not supposed to die yet...
"Stop talking. I think I'll just stop the bleeding for now, so just keep calm. After I stop the bleeding, I'll take you to the hospital, and...I have to call the cops...oh gosh, I'm too overwhelmed," Evans declared, then looked around frantically.
She shook her head. "Don't involve the cops..."
Her voice trailed off as she shut her eyes. Panic rose in Evans' chest as her body went limp in his arms.
"Hey! Hey, look at me!" She gave no response.
Darkness, the fresh smell of blood, and silence enveloped Evans.
He looked around, but no one was around. "Hello...is anyone there? I need help! It's an emergency!"
No response came.
••••••••••••••••••
Memories came flooding back.
How Evans had been hurled out of the window and how he would have died if she hadn't arrived quickly.
The violent fight and the blows they exchanged in the middle of the night.
The blood that gushed out of Evans' stomach as he was struck.
"No...no. Evans!"
She screamed as she opened her eyes widely.
The sunlight peeped through the curtain into her eyes and she closed it back then opened it as she sat up.
She winced softly as a sharp pain shot through her side. Her hand moved to her abdomen, and her fingers trembled as she felt the bandaged area.
Dried blood and fresh wounds.
She recalled last night's fight, then looked around calmly. The room does not look like a hospital, and she had no shirt on, only the bandage around her waist.
Evans!
Where could he be? He was also hurt.
The door of the room opened slowly, and she extended her claws calmly, her gaze fixed on the door. Her tense shoulders eased a little as she saw the person standing at the doorway.
