Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Alpha Among Predators

"Unbelievable." She muttered as she stepped out of the car. Evans also alighted from the car adjusting his backpack. "What are you doing? Put that back in the car..act like you are confident for once."

Evans obeyed and then closed the door behind him. "What else do I need to do?"

"Nothing. Just keep quiet and follow me." She replied.

Evans frowned then followed her silently.

The cafe looked normal, like any other, but he knew it was not. She was right; her kind were present in the café. Their energy was unmatched and unmistakably strong. As they stepped closer, Evans felt something tighten in his chest but he ignored it.

As they arrived in the doorway, Ophelia glanced back at him.

"You feel it, don't you?"

"Not really. It's faint."

A light smile crossed her lips. "That's good. It shows that you are truly one of us."

She pushed the door open and the moment Evans stepped in, silence.

He heard chattering and clinking of glasses but everything had disappeared.

It was just silence and nothing else. Eyes lifted and movements slowed while he stayed behind Ophelia quietly.

He knew everyone in the cafe was very aware of him and he did not like it.

"What is going on? What's this place?" He asked under his breath.

Ophelia gave no response.

She walked as if she owned the place while Evans noticed the subtle movements. Two men exchanged glances while a woman stopped mid-sip.

"Don't tell me that scent is coming from that tiny boy." A man said.

Evans could hear. He knew they were talking about him but he kept calm.

"Do you feel that?" Another woman let out softly.

Ophelia and Evans took a seat in the corner. He leaned forward while she crossed her legs.

"Do you think they recognize me?" Evans murmured.

Ophelia clicked her tongue. "I think so. Different kinds of our kind come here to be themselves. They don't have to hide their real identity."

" I see."

A waitress approached. She smiled at Ophelia and as she got to their seat, her gaze flickered to Evans.

"What would you like?" She asked."

"Two coffees," Ophelia replied flatly.

The waitress nodded but before leaving she looked at Evans which he noticed.

"This is not normal. We should have gone to a park or… a normal human restaurant. This place is strange and you think we'd be able to talk with everyone's gazes on us?"

"Stop acting like a coward, Evans. I brought it here so you can blend in. Aren't you sick of those silly human activities and demeanor? They disgust me." Ophelia retorted as she leaned back.

Evans shook his head slightly then placed his arms on the table. "Can we make whatever we came here for snappy? I don't feel comfortable here."

Ophelia paused, her eyes scanning his expression. "Alright. I'll begin with our pack ... .I don't have the right to speak about your parents. I'm not in any position to do that."

Evans knitted his brows. "What do you mean? Did you bring me here so we can chit-chat about your wolf group and have coffee? Shouldn't you tell me things about myself instead?"

Ophelia rolled her eyes. "You should ask your mother about that, dear Evans. I am not your mother. My duty is to let you know who you really are and how your pack loyalty lies with you."

"You.." Evans stopped, his tone was getting louder. He stayed calm and then looked around. Everyone was doing their thing then he shifted his gaze back to Ophelia. "You are right. I should probably talk to my mom about that…just tell me important things about myself."

"Now you're talking," Ophelia answered back. "I want you to understand that your existence is a threat. You, being alive, are a threat."

"A threat to who?"

"To everyone who knows what you are. Remember I told you about your dad?"

Evans nodded.

"Yep. You are a threat to people who know what you are as I said earlier and people who don't know yet." She continued. "You are not just any werewolf, Evans. You are from an Alpha's bloodline and that alone makes you different from me and anyone here. You shouldn't be a prey but a predator."

Evans' finger twitched slightly. He looked down at it then back at Ophelia.

"Did you see that?"

Ophelia crossed her arms, a satisfied look on her face. "Your wolf…it is awakening. It is no longer sleeping probably because of the things happening to you lately.

"That is not possible…I felt like it was just a reaction." Evans replied calmly.

"That is not just a reaction, Evans." She said, "It is your instincts and that is what makes you different."

Evans felt her heart beat faster than normal. "What if I don't want it? What if I don't want to entertain this…strange happening?"

Ophelia shrugged. "You don't have to want it. You have to keep it under your control otherwise it will take control of you. You don't want to wake up one morning and find your mother in a pool of blood, do you?"

Evans raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

"You wouldn't want that..so I'm guessing you will want to keep it under control?"

There was a brief silence.

Then, Evans met her gaze.

"Tell me about the pack."

Ophelia's expression shifted to a more serious one. "Nightshade pack isn't what it used to be, Evans. We were the strongest, deadliest, and probably most merciful because of your father but things have changed." She began. "When he died, things changed. Loyalty broke, power shifted. Some stayed and some are waiting…like me."

"Waiting for what exactly?"

"You."

Evans' heart skipped a beat. "Why?"

"Because you are our Alpha and you're not dead. Not all of them are waiting though but the elders are. They believe you will be back and take control of your father's position." She retorted. "Some who are loyal and the elders who are still alive are waiting."

Evans exhaled sharply as he turned his gaze to the table. "And the others?"

"They won't accept you easily. For them, you are unfit to be their Alpha."
