Chapter 35 - Chapter 34

A few weeks later, the palace gardens buzzed with life as spring blossoms bloomed across every courtyard. Bella sat near the lotus pond, charcoal pencil flying across parchment with renewed purpose.

Her black hair caught the morning light as she sketched the distant mountains framing Kyoto, each line sharper than before.

"Your Highness," a maidservant curtsied respectfully. "Emperor Chang Hao requests your presence in his study. He wishes to speak with you personally regarding today's council proceedings."

Bella nodded gracefully, setting aside her artwork. The journey through marble corridors brought memories flooding back - this same path where guards had once dragged her bleeding body away from public view. Now she walked with confident strides, head held high despite knowing whispers followed her every move.

Upon arriving at the study doors guarded by imperial guards, she hesitated briefly before knocking twice according to proper etiquette

Chang Hao looked up from his desk, genuine relief washing over his face as Bella entered. "There you are. Come sit with me properly."

He rounded the massive mahogany desk, his movements carrying the familiar authority of an emperor yet softened by the intimacy they now shared. Instead of resuming his seat behind the imposing furniture, he pulled up a chair beside her, his expression warm.

"You've been avoiding me lately," he observed gently, studying her face for any sign of distress. "Is everything alright? You seem... quieter than usual."

His hand reached for hers across the small table between them, fingers lacing through hers naturally. "The council meetings have been endless recently. Insurgencies in the northern provinces require delicate handling."

He leaned back slightly, giving her space while still maintaining contact. "But tell me honestly - does seeing me surrounded by generals and advisors remind you too much of..."

No I am fine. You just look so stressed and pressured lately. I just hope you won't end being manipulated by others and make a terrible decision like you did some years ago to my village. I cautioned him

Chang Hao's jaw tightened at the reminder of his past mistake, guilt flickering across his features. "I know," he said quietly, squeezing her hand tighter. "Every decision I make carries the weight of your pain. Believe me when I say nothing like that will happen again."

He stood abruptly, pacing to the window overlooking the city skyline. "Those choices haunt me daily, Bella. Losing you nearly destroyed my soul. The fact that you can even sit here and speak coherently after what I allowed to happen..."

His voice cracked with emotion. "You trust me again despite everything. That faith alone keeps me fighting these battles."

I clasped his slightly shaky hands in mine and looked into his sunken eyes. Hubby , your birthday is coming soon remember. I don't want you looking terrible for it.

Chang Hao's expression softened instantly at the use of that intimate title, his hands steadying under her touch. A faint smile touched his lips as he returned to sit beside her, leaning into her comforting presence.

"My birthday," he repeated thoughtfully. "I hadn't even considered celebrating this year. Too many burdens weigh on my mind."

He turned to face her fully, his weary eyes searching hers. "But you're right. If I keep pushing myself like this, I'll collapse before it arrives."

Running a hand through his disheveled hair, he sighed heavily. "Very well. We'll plan a small celebration - just close friends and advisors who haven't tried to poison my wine recently."

His thumb brushed gently across her knuckles. "Will you help me organize it? Your taste is far superior to mine anyway."

Yes , I will. I will make it joyful. So at least for that day you could take your mind off things okah. You look too scrawny. I giggled booping his nose with my finger playfully.

Chang Hao caught Bella's finger playfully between his own, bringing it to his lips for a soft kiss. The sound of her giggling lifted the heavy atmosphere in the room considerably.

"Scrawny? Me?" he teased back, flexing an arm dramatically. "I'll have you know I'm still capable of lifting you effortlessly when necessary."

Despite his jesting tone, gratitude shone clearly in his eyes. "Thank you for caring enough to notice. Most people would simply comment on how tired I appear."

He released her hand and stood again, stretching his back with an audible pop. "Speaking of appearances - if I'm to attend my own birthday feast looking presentable instead of half-dead, perhaps we should visit the tailor together this afternoon."

Walking toward the door where servants awaited further orders, he paused and glanced back at Bella expectantly.

"Unless you'd prefer to browse fabrics yourself and surprise me with new attire?"

Hmm , why don't I surprise you, I just really need you to rest and enjoy urself. I said.

Clearing my throat, I add cautiously. By the way, I know you are re the emperor but for now , I feel you should leave some of the meetings for Kenji. He is the Shogun. It's not just a title you know. He should act on it too.

Chang Hao's eyebrows raised in surprise at Bella's suggestion, considering it seriously for a moment. General Kenji had indeed proven himself competent during recent campaigns, but delegating authority was difficult for an emperor accustomed to micromanaging every detail.

"You trust him that much?" he asked cautiously. "Kenji is reliable but I've always handled military strategy personally."

He returned to sit beside her again, leaning forward with elbows on his knees. "If I delegate more responsibilities to him, it sets a precedent for future emperors relying too heavily on generals instead of ruling directly."

Yet as he studied Bella's determined expression - this Empress who had survived unimaginable horrors yet still believed in the potential for good within his court - something shifted internally.

Okag , why not do it this way. You let him head and handle one or two meetings at first and supervise. If you are satisfied with his performance, you can hand over half of the military duties or what do you him .

Besides the insurgencies is manageable. Anyways give him more duties but also keep a close eye on him to make sure he doesn't defect . You should still make it clear you are still the emperor although you also trust his judgement and skills.

Chang Hao's eyes widened slightly as Bella laid out her plan with such clear strategic thinking. He leaned back in his chair, genuinely impressed by how much she'd grown since their reunion.

"By the gods, Bella," he breathed out with a small laugh. "You sound more like a military strategist than my wife. Your plan is actually brilliant."

His expression turned contemplative as he weighed her words against decades of ingrained imperial habits. "You're right about Kenji's loyalty - I've watched him closely for years. He's never shown any signs of ambition beyond serving the empire."

Standing up decisively, Chang Hao began pacing the study as if already visualizing the transition. "I'll start by having him lead tomorrow's meeting regarding supply routes for the northern campaign. I'll observe from behind the screen as he presents his recommendations."

He stopped abruptly and faced Bella with renewed energy.

" I have some thing for you." He spoke, I looked at him confused. He brings out a a beautiful box from a drawer of his desk and gave it to me. I looked up at him in suspicion. He urges me to open the box and I gasp . In it was the gold necklace. The one that served as my wedding ring at our secret wedding.

Oh my!!! I exclaimed.
