The grand ballroom hummed with lively conversation as guests gathered for the emperor's birthday celebration. Music from a string ensemble filled the air, mixing with the clinking of glasses and laughter. Chang Hao stood near the main entrance greeting arrivals, his red and cream robes catching the candlelight beautifully.
His eyes scanned the crowd automatically until they locked onto Bella standing by a pillar across the room. The sight of her in her formal gown made his breath catch - royal blue silk accentuating her figure perfectly, her dark hair styled elegantly with jeweled pins that highlighted the beauty of her dark skin.
One of his advisors leaned close to whisper, "Your Majesty looks radiant tonight. And your concubine , Miss Bella... she outshines everyone here."
Chang Hao merely nodded distractedly, his focus entirely on his wife. He excused himself from the ambassador from Korea mid-sentence, promising to return shortly.
"A moment please," he told the diplomat before making his way directly toward Bella through the throng of nobles.
I am glad the colors suites his highness well. I say pointing to his robe.
Chang Hao's lips curved into a genuine smile as Bella complimented his attire, his eyes lighting up with warmth. "Only because you chose it for me," he replied smoothly, his voice carrying just enough volume to be heard over the surrounding music and chatter.
He stepped closer, deliberately invading her personal space in a way that was both intimate and public. His hand found hers naturally, fingers lacing together as he studied her own gown appreciatively.
"You however," he murmured low enough for only her to hear, "look absolutely breathtaking. Every man in this room is secretly wishing they were me right now."
Your highness, it seems it's time to give your welcome speech . Your highness, I also noticed empress Cheng isn't present . As much as it is uncomfortable for me. I feel it's best she is atleast present for your birthday.
At least as your first wife. I say. About that, the present I mentioned a week ago would be announced now. He mentioned and smiled. Hubby can you do me a favor? Can you postpone the present for a little while?
Let me go get empress Cheng . I know we might argue but if I can just convince her to be present for at least half the party, it will mean a lot to me and the empire's peace of mind. He looked like he didn't want to.
But, I add. You make your welcome speech, play the ceremonial games with the dignitaries then you can present the gift. By then, I should be back peacefully , hopefully without any scratches from her. I smiled insisting and he gave in.
Chang Hao sighed heavily, running a hand through his freshly combed hair. "You're right," he admitted grudgingly. "Having my primary wife absent creates bad optics for the empire."
He squeezed Bella's hand briefly before releasing it. "Very well - go retrieve Empress Cheng. But promise me you'll return soon. I refuse to accept any excuses about arguments lasting longer than that."
His gaze became serious as he leaned closer. "Be careful with her temper, Bella."
You give him an appreciative smile and a quick discreet kiss . Straightening his posture once more, Chang Hao turned toward the dais where his welcoming speech awaited delivery. "I'll begin the festivities as planned," he called over his shoulder. "Don't keep me waiting too long."
As Bella left the ballroom, servants scrambled to bring forth cushions and refreshments for the emperor while musicians struck up a formal fanfare announcing the commencement of ceremonies.
