Chapter 22 - Vile Armour

Immediately after being created, it met a sneaky void creature, ran into the void adventurers, better to call them bottom feeders that lack enough power to become part of the army, even if a few could. Then it was forced to interact with a void lord, one of the pinnacles of power, that happen to lead it to become a dungeon conqueror. Coming to the dungeon the Knight met that damn Retcher, and had not gotten the chance to properly adjust, thus the sudden eviction of the Yiril back to the void. The thing is that the Knight had not really gotten a clear picture of what separates the void creatures from the monsters, humans, beasts, and other existences. It seems that only void creatures can toy with souls, and barely any other creature could be able to see them nor touch then as easily as the Knight had been, once they were dead. This solidified even further when the Knight noticed that most monsters avoid the void, but being insane, some still enter it.

Arduo did not possessed a skill that allowed her to wonder from her body, which gave her the side effect of seeing souls. She had looked strangely confused at the Knight when it took Nicks soul. When Folisha started growing mad, the Knight had asked her about it. It turns out the souls of the dead dissipate, either being absorbed and recycled or sent somewhere, there might even be some form of rebirth that the humans have hypothesised. But not when the soul is taken by the void. It is utterly stripped of its right to exist and becomes the irrefutable property of the void. The blood river then takes a bit of it to nurture the land. The void itself does not need sustenance, but the phantasm world it had created to allow void being to interact with each other does. All that land is just a convenient illusion to allow communication between void beings. It must be something put in place by the being… no, the thing… the unknown existence that did not like the Knight, even hesitant to part with the grain of darkness.

If the Knight is right than this means that void beings are not supposed to exist. The others may not have the smithing skill, but others in the void do, thus they reshape souls that have been torn from the cycle of life. What does this have to do with the Knights current predicament though? Sure, the souls of all those it takes are damned to eternal servitude, never to find peace, but this does not magically make the Knight stronger. It just means that beings have to try harder not to die at the hands of a void being.

The Knight did not close its eyes since it had none, or at least the rotten imitations just remained eternally stale. It did not have lungs to breath, so it stopped imitating the actions of such. The Knight lost the instinctual habits of still thinking it was human. It seems the Knight speaks through its soul, sees with its soul, thinks with its soul, everything it does is through its soul. The Knight summoned it's the hammer, the mobility power it does not have, but the other hammer could probably not handle these things anyway. This one was crafted through the soul of the soul of the last level 149. All its hits are critical. The Knight then readied itself and lunged at the monsters, it dodged the first and went in for a hit to the side of the second one through a teleportation placing it next to the jaw of this abomination. They were so huge the Knight had to use teleport to just stand at the height able to inflict effective damage.

The hammer moved across the air, the Knights strength was no joke, added to the mighty skill and battle monger this hit was gonna be felt. The Knight's hammer was… the Knight as gone. Swallowed by the first monster, in one gigantic gobble. Even with teleportation the Knight could not make the hit, the monster the Knight had dodged first had already moved to intercept the hit. And even though the Knight had been contemplating, but never really fully researched what would happen once inside a being, the same way it could not teleport into living things, it could not be teleported out. The Knight was right, the stronger monsters are, the more they resist the use of skills, more so if these skills affect them directly. The monsters all lost interest and had started walking away as the one that ate the Knight, tried to chew it. And then it swallowed.

***

About a decade had passed.

The Knight had done it.

Suicide.

It just took a while for even the digestive tract of the level 150 to bring the Knight to the brink of death. That was because of the survivor skill, it's the one that has been healing the Knight when things got hopeless. The Knight had even fought against greed for so long, to prevent the followers to rampage, in a desperate ploy to free the Knight. Surprisingly even the void wanted to escape the Knight. Now that the Knight had seen that it was no human, it had finally thought of it. It was kind of strange to not fight the world to let it try to kill it. The Knight was the weakest in the dungeon, but that also made it the hardest to kill. It was always aware of how easy it was to kill, but it never really thought it could die, fighting like a desperate human to cling to life. The sole survivor skill basically made the Knight immortal when things were desperate. The Knight had been inventive to kill the other monsters, the Knight knows it was hard every step of the way, but really it was just disappointing.

It may be the Vile Knight, but it was not very knightly to fight like a beast amongst beasts. It knew that it did not have dignity, but this desperation had hindered the Knight from noticing what truly made it truly terrifying. The visage of terror power was good at killing every monster weaker than it and giving the stronger ones a freight. The fact that it had managed to kill a few of the monsters above its level was interesting. The Knight had not been meant to rely on that power. It had also been relying on the gimmicks and help of its skills, which was of course normal to use your skills to gain an upper hand, although, relying on them is a death sentence. Nick was a good example; he could see ahead but that skill complimented his combat prowess. The Knight had wondered why the grain of darkness had originally refused to send it to the obsidian dungeon, instead sending it to an abysmal one. Simple really, it would be like bullying the weak if not. The Knight just had to find a way to open this facet of its power.

This was the power that it had inside itself before even being forced into the void. Why was it that the Knight could feel the muscles of rotting flesh and the armour as its body even though it did not see the body as an equipped item. The armour was a part of it, but there was more. The Knight had activated the power of the armour, the Vile armour. It had only stayed dormant, until the Knight was a second away from dying to take the effect. So, after a year of trying to kill itself, the Knight had succeeded. The second right before the soul was about to escape its body, the Knight felt it. The Knight usually had an instinctual understanding of its stats and skill, even the soul tools it made, yet for the armour and sword the Knight could not feel their purpose. The sword was still missing though, but after forcing the armour to awaken, the Knight could now feel the purpose of one of them.

Vile Armour has responded to danger. Channelling soul… Dreaded soul has responded to armour. Void Augmentation Active.

The Knight had been using the void and the visage of terror skill in a wasteful manner.

'It's not like this thing came with a manual. Up until now I have been letting the void leave my body and cover me like a fog. The Visage power too. But this armour is special it can channel them into itself. Having a light field of ultimate fear emanating from it and the power of the void strengthening me. At first, I had assumed that the void is meant for moving across world only, then later on, the thing that monsters are attracted to, a condensed version of it at the deepest level of the dungeon did not make sense. The fact that slowly absorbing this passage to the void they grow in levels. Until it disappears and they leave in search for a dungeon. Then it is claimed by void lords? Why? For power that's why.'

The Knight raised its hand and folded it into a fist.

 ***

The monsters were still roaming around their cavern, then one of them stopped, two others looked at it, then suddenly a gigantic hole shot out of its underbelly. The guts spilled from the stomach ad it fell.

You have slain a level 150 monster, Ender…

Rising from the spilled intestines, the Knight spoke, "Do you remember me?"

Its armour was radiating an alarming sense of dread. It was pitch black, making it hard to notice the groves, if not for the difference in colour. The Knight was blending in with the darkness of this lightless dungeon, it would have been impossible to notice if not for the fact that the spot that it was standing at was even darker than the surrounding darkness, shaped in the visage of a Knight, a truly vile one.

There was silence, it's not like monsters even spoke.

"I guess you don't. Then none of you are worthy of becoming a vessel, failing to answer to your commanding officer is a grave offence."

Then they lunged at it. Teleporting above the head of one, the Knight punched it, crushing the head completely. Then teleported to the next, crushing it underfoot, with an earth-shattering kick. Then next, then the next, until only the blind one remained.

You have slain a level 150 monster…

You have slain…

'Never thought I'd hear those words in quick succession.'
