Chapter 13 - Trial of Betrayal

The cavern of secrets faded, leaving Kael and Lyra standing on a narrow path that wound through jagged cliffs. The Trialblade pulsed faintly, its glow heavier, burdened by the truths it now carried.

Kael sighed. "So… what's next? Please tell me it's not another therapy session."

Lyra's voice was quiet, almost hesitant. "The Trial of Betrayal. It is… different. It does not test strength, wit, or endurance. It tests trust. And trust can break."

Kael frowned. "Trust? Again? This realm really likes rubbing salt in that wound."

Lyra's gaze lingered on him. "Be careful. Betrayal cuts deeper than any blade."

They entered a canyon where the walls shimmered with illusions. Shadows flickered, forming scenes from Kael's past friends turning away, promises broken, laughter fading into silence.

Kael muttered, "Great. Now my failures come with a highlight reel."

Lyra's voice was steady. "The trial forces you to confront betrayal. Not of others, but of yourself."

Kael groaned. "Fantastic. So I'm both the victim and the villain."

Suddenly, the canyon shifted. Lyra vanished. In her place stood another figure—Lyra's shadow, twisted, her silver hair darkened, her eyes cruel.

Kael froze. "Oh no. Not you too."

The shadow Lyra spoke, her voice sharp. "She will betray you. She will leave you. She serves the realm, not you."

Kael gritted his teeth. "Shut up. She's the only reason I've made it this far."

The shadow laughed. "And when the realm demands it, she will abandon you. Just as all others have."

Kael raised the Trialblade, swinging at the shadow. But each strike passed through, leaving only echoes.

Lyra's real voice echoed faintly. "Kael. Do not fight me. Fight the doubt."

Kael shouted, "Easy for you to say! She looks exactly like you!"

Lyra's voice trembled. "Trust me. I will not betray you."

Kael hesitated, staring at the shadow. His chest tightened. "I want to believe that. But everyone leaves eventually."

The shadow smirked. "Then strike her. End it now."

Kael lowered the Trialblade, sweat dripping down his face. "No. I'm done running. I'm done doubting. If she betrays me, then so be it. But until then… I trust her."

The shadow froze, its grin fading. The Trialblade pulsed, glowing brighter. Light flared, shattering the shadow into fragments.

Lyra appeared again, her eyes softened. "You chose trust. Few do."

Kael smirked weakly. "Yeah, well, I'm stubborn. And maybe a little stupid."

Lyra's lips curved faintly. "Stubbornness can be strength. Even in betrayal."

The canyon calmed, its illusions fading. The Trialblade glowed deeper, resonating with Kael's choice. He stared at it, awe flickering beneath his sarcasm.

"So… betrayal, huh? Guess I passed. But I still don't like it."

Lyra's voice was soft. "No one does. That is why it cuts deepest."

Kael chuckled. "Figures. This realm really knows how to ruin a guy's mood."
