Chapter 18 - Trial of the Abyss

The hall of mirrors shattered into dust, leaving Kael and Lyra standing at the edge of a chasm so vast it seemed bottomless. Darkness stretched endlessly below, swallowing light, swallowing sound. The Trialblade pulsed faintly, its glow dimming as though afraid.

Kael peered over the edge, his voice shaky. "Okay… this looks like the world's biggest hole. Please tell me we're not supposed to jump."

Lyra's eyes were solemn, her staff glowing faintly. "The Trial of the Abyss. Here, you must descend into darkness deeper than any before. The abyss tests courage, despair, and the truth of why the realm exists."

Kael groaned. "Fantastic. So basically, I'm about to fall into cosmic depression."

They stepped forward. A bridge of shadow formed beneath their feet, leading into the abyss. Each step echoed, swallowed instantly by the void.

Kael muttered, "Great. Haunted bridge. Just what I needed."

Lyra's voice was calm. "Do not mock it. The abyss listens. It knows what you fear."

Kael smirked weakly. "Yeah, well, it's going to hear a lot of sarcasm."

The abyss stirred. Whispers rose from below, voices twisted, cruel. "You will fail. You are nothing. You are forgotten."

Kael gritted his teeth. "Figures. Even the abyss thinks I'm useless."

Lyra's voice rang out. "Ignore them. The abyss feeds on despair. Do not let it consume you."

Kael shouted back, "Easy for you to say! You're not the one hearing cosmic hate mail!"

Suddenly, figures emerged from the darkness—shadows shaped like Kael himself. Each carried the Trialblade, but twisted, broken. One laughed cruelly, another wept, another stood silent.

Kael froze. "Oh no. Not clones again. This realm really loves me too much."

The laughing shadow spoke. "You hide behind jokes. You will never change."

Kael swung, shattering it. "Yeah, well, at least I'm funny."

The weeping shadow whispered. "You will lose her. You will be alone."

Kael hesitated, then struck. "Not today."

The silent shadow stared, its eyes empty. Kael froze, unsettled. Lyra's voice cut through. "Strike him. Silence is the most dangerous abyss."

Kael swung, shattering it into fragments.

The abyss roared, the bridge trembling. Kael stumbled, sweat dripping down his face. "Okay… this is insane. How do we stop the abyss from swallowing us?"

Lyra's eyes glowed. "Strike the heart. The Trialblade must pierce the core of despair."

Kael frowned. "Heart of despair? Where is that, exactly?"

Lyra pointed downward. At the center of the abyss, a massive vortex pulsed, light swirling like a storm.

Kael groaned. "Of course. The giant hole in the hole. Why didn't I guess?"

They descended deeper, the bridge stretching endlessly. Shadows attacked, claws slashing, eyes burning. Kael swung wildly, the Trialblade glowing brighter with each strike. Sparks of light cut through darkness, but more emerged, endless.

Lyra chanted, her magic weaving into the abyss, trying to calm it. "Hold them off!"

Kael shouted back, "Easy for you to say! I'm basically a one-man monster buffet!"

Despite his sarcasm, he fought fiercely. The Trialblade pulsed, resonating with the abyss. Each strike against the shadows sent ripples into the vortex, slowing its pull.

At the abyss's heart, a colossal guardian emerged—a creature forged from despair itself, towering over them, its body a fusion of shadow and stone. Chains of darkness dangled from its limbs, broken and sparking.

Kael froze. "Oh great. Boss fight. Because the small ones weren't enough."

Lyra's voice was steady. "This is the Abysswarden. Defeat it, and the abyss will calm."

Kael gritted his teeth. "Fine. But if I die, I'm haunting you."

The Abysswarden roared, swinging massive claws. Kael dodged clumsily, barely avoiding the strike. He countered, the Trialblade flaring, but the guardian's stone body resisted.

Lyra's magic surged, chains of light wrapping around the guardian, slowing it. "Strike the cracks! The Trialblade resonates with weakness!"

Kael nodded, charging. He swung at the glowing fissures across the guardian's chest. The blade cut deep, light exploding. The guardian shrieked, stumbling.

Kael smirked. "Guess I found the cheat code."

The battle raged. Kael struck again and again, each blow weakening the guardian. Lyra's magic bound its limbs, forcing it to kneel. Finally, Kael leapt, swinging the Trialblade with all his strength.

The blade pierced the guardian's core. Light erupted, shattering its body into fragments. The shadows dissolved, leaving silence.

The abyss calmed, its vortex sealing, the bridge steady.

Kael collapsed, panting. "I swear, this realm is trying to kill me with cardio and therapy."

Lyra approached, her expression softened. "You endured. The abyss accepts you."

Kael smirked weakly. "Yeah? Maybe next time, the trial can just ask me to sign a waiver instead of strangling me."

Lyra shook her head, though a faint smile betrayed her amusement. "You complain, yet you endure. That is strength."

Kael chuckled. "Or stupidity. Still hard to tell the difference."
