Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: “The World Behind His Eyes”

That promise—

Was heavier than anything before.

Because truth…

In his world—

Was the most dangerous thing of all.

The rooftop felt quieter than usual.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

Just… heavy. And heavy.

The wind moved slowly, brushing past Han Soo-min's hair as she stood near the edge, her fingers lightly gripping the cold metal railing.

Beside her—

Kang Jae-hyun.

Silent.

Still.

Watching her more than the city.

"…You said you'll tell me the truth," she spoke softly.

He didn't respond immediately.

Because truth…

Wasn't something he gave easily.

"…If I start," he finally said,

"…there's no going back."

Her heart tightened.

"…There already isn't."

That answer was enough.

A long silence passed.

Then—

"…My family runs an organization," he began.

Not looking at her.

But speaking clearly.

"…It's called Black Lotus."

The name felt cold.

Dangerous.

"…We control businesses, networks… people."

Soo-min swallowed.

"…And enemies?"

"…Many."

A pause.

"…Some want power."

Another pause.

"…Some want revenge."

His voice didn't shake.

Didn't change.

But the meaning behind it—

Was heavy.

"…And now…" she whispered,

"…they want me."

Silence.

He didn't deny it.

"…You became a weakness."

Her chest tightened.

"…So I'm just a liability?"

"No."

That answer came fast.

Firm.

"…Then what am I?"

For the first time—

He looked at her.

Directly.

Deeply.

"…Someone I can't ignore."

Her breath caught.

That wasn't romantic.

But it wasn't cold either.

It was honest.

And that made it more dangerous.

Later that day…

Jae-hyun didn't let her walk alone.

Not to class.

Not to lunch.

Not even to the gate.

Everywhere she went—

He was there.

Students noticed.

Whispers spread like wildfire.

"This is getting serious…"

"He's not leaving her side…"

"Is she his girlfriend?"

"No… something's wrong…"

And they were right.

Something was very wrong.

After school—

A black car waited outside.

"…Get in."

Soo-min hesitated.

"…Where are we going?"

"…You said you want the truth."

A pause.

"…So I'll show you."

Her heart skipped.

This was it.

The line.

The one she shouldn't cross.

But—

She stepped forward.

And got in.

The city slowly changed as the car moved.

Bright streets turned darker.

Crowded roads turned empty.

Luxury buildings faded into silence.

Until—

The car stopped.

In front of a massive building.

Cold.

Black.

Hidden.

"…This is…"

"…My world."

Her breath felt stuck.

The gates opened automatically.

Men in black suits stood on both sides.

Watching.

Observing.

Judging.

As Soo-min stepped out—

She felt it.

The weight.

The danger.

This wasn't a place for someone like her.

"…Stay close," Jae-hyun said.

She nodded silently.

They walked inside.

The atmosphere was suffocating.

Everyone bowed slightly as Jae-hyun passed.

"Boss."

"Sir."

Respect.

Fear.

Power.

Soo-min's fingers trembled slightly.

This is real…

Not a story.

Not imagination.

Reality.

They entered a large room.

Dim lights.

Long table.

Screens.

Men waiting.

Lee Min-jun stood there too.

"…You actually brought her," he muttered.

Jae-hyun didn't respond.

"…Sit."

Soo-min sat slowly.

Her heart racing.

"…Why am I here?"

Silence.

Then—

A man stepped forward.

"…We have a problem."

Jae-hyun's eyes sharpened.

"…Speak."

"…There's a leak."

The room froze.

"…Someone inside…"

A pause.

"…is giving information to our enemies."

Soo-min's breath stopped.

Betrayal.

Inside.

"…Who?" Jae-hyun asked.

"…We're still confirming."

Min-jun crossed his arms.

"…This explains yesterday."

Jae-hyun's expression darkened.

"…Find them."

"…We will."

The man hesitated.

"…There's more."

Silence.

"…They know about her."

Everything stopped.

Soo-min's chest tightened.

"…How much?" Jae-hyun asked.

"…Enough."

The room turned cold.

Deadly.

"…Then we're out of time."

Jae-hyun stood up.

His aura changed instantly.

Dangerous.

Unforgiving.

"…Lock everything down."

"…And the girl?" someone asked.

A pause.

Then—

"…She stays with me."

No one argued.

No one dared.

Later—

Soo-min stood outside the room.

Her mind spinning.

"…This is too much."

Her voice shook.

"…A traitor… enemies… me…"

She turned—

And walked.

Faster.

Away.

She needed air.

Needed space.

Needed to think.

But—

A hand grabbed her arm.

She froze.

"…Going somewhere?"

A man.

Not familiar.

His grip tightened.

"…You shouldn't wander here."

Fear rose instantly.

"…Let go."

"…You're important, aren't you?"

Her heart dropped.

"…That's dangerous."

His smile—

Was wrong.

Cold.

"…You're the reason everything is getting messy."

Her breath became uneven.

"…I said let go."

But he didn't.

"…Maybe if you disappear…"

Before he could finish—

A force slammed him against the wall.

Hard.

Jae-hyun.

His eyes—

Were terrifying.

"…I told you."

His voice dropped.

"…Don't touch her."

The man froze.

"…I was just—"

"Wrong answer."

Silence.

The room felt like it would collapse.

"…Do you want to die?" Jae-hyun asked quietly.

The man's face turned pale.

"…No."

"…Then remember your place."

He let go.

The man quickly backed away.

Disappeared.

Soo-min stood there.

Shaking.

"…Even here…" she whispered,

"…I'm not safe."

Jae-hyun looked at her.

"…Not yet."

"…Then why bring me here?!"

Her voice broke.

"…To show you the truth."

Tears filled her eyes.

"…This isn't a world…"

Her voice trembled.

"…I can live in."

Silence.

"…I know."

That answer—

Hurt more.

"…Then why—"

"Because I can't let you go."

Her breath stopped.

Again.

Those words.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

"…That's selfish."

"…I know."

"…Then stop."

Silence.

A long one.

Then—

"…I can't."

Her eyes closed.

Tears fell.

"…You're going to destroy me."

His expression softened.

Just a little.

"…No."

A pause.

"…I'll destroy everything else first."

Her heart shook.

That wasn't comforting.

That was terrifying.

And yet—

Part of her believed him.

Far away—

The traitor smiled in the shadows.

"…Everything is falling into place."

A message was sent.

"Target confirmed. Next move ready."

Back in the dim hallway—

Two people stood.

Closer than before.

Deeper than before.

Trapped.

Together.

And the line between their worlds—

Was already gone.
