Evelyn came home on a Saturday morning.
The two babies: Lucian and Clara sat in the back with her, one on the left and the other on her right, both of them strapped into car seats that their grandfather had personally inspected twice before the driver was allowed to touch the ignition, and she watched the iron gates grow larger through the window and felt something she hadn't felt the first time. She felt like she was going home.
The estate had been transformed. Not dramatically though, but, in the way of a house that has decided to make room for something new and done it with quiet, deliberate love.
