Chapter 407: Demigod Template Cards and God Template Cards
Ethan had exactly one verdict on these template cards.
Strong. Very strong. Insanely strong!
His gaze moved slowly over the cards in his hand. Each one seemed to carry endless stories and power.
[Ekko, the Boy Who Shattered Time]: A delinquent genius from the streets of Zaun who can manipulate time, bending any situation to his advantage. It's not how much time you have, it's how you use it. Possessing this template card allows the Host's Family to inherit everything about this character.
[Ryze, the Rune Mage]: One of the oldest mages in Runeterra. Born in ancient times and hardened by countless trials, he shoulders a burden too heavy to bear. This archmage's weapons are his unbreakable resolve and his vast arcane knowledge. He has spent his whole life searching for the World Runes. I have heard kingdoms fall, and in the end fade from memory. Possessing this template card allows the Host's Family to inherit everything about this character.
(WARNING! This character template has reached Demigod level. Forced integration would cause irreversible harm to the inheritor. It can only be inherited gradually.)
"Knew it!" Far from being disappointed by the description, Ethan smiled. He'd half expected this before he even looked at the card.
League of Legends had gods and demigods, after all, though Ethan wasn't entirely sure how many gods there were in LoL.
For demigods, there was Ryze, whom he'd just pulled, and Azir, the Emperor of the Sands. Beyond that, Ethan wasn't sure.
But there were a few champions he knew for certain were gods: Soraka, the Starchild; Aurelion Sol, the Star Forger; Janna, the Storm's Fury; and Ornn, the Fire below the Mountain. Ethan was absolutely sure these were gods. And that's right: he'd just pulled a god template card.
He made a point of reading the card's description and found it wasn't quite the same as the demigod card.
[Janna, the Storm's Fury]: The guardian spirit of Zaun. Storms are her weapon and Runeterra is her home. The mysterious Janna is a spirit of wind who protects the helpless people of Zaun.
(WARNING! This character template has reached God level. If the Host's Family uses this template card, it will draw the gaze of the god. Whether the user receives the god's blessing or the god's wrath will depend on the user's conduct.)
Honestly, it was the first time Ethan had ever seen a template card like this. With every template card before, a high enough match rate meant you could inherit the whole thing.
This time was very different. Neither demigod cards nor god cards like Janna's could be fully inherited outright.
Ethan was a little disappointed at first, but he soon got over it.
The demigod cards and god cards also differed from each other. A demigod card could be inherited, just slowly, and carried no risk. A god card was different. It carried risk.
Ethan understood what the card meant. Put plainly, it came down to whether the god liked the look of you. If she did, she'd give you some encouragement. If she didn't, she'd punish you, and whether that punishment cost you your life was down to luck.
These were gods, after all. If you could inherit them directly, gods would be awfully cheap.
At least with these template cards, his family's ceiling could now reach demigod level.
Ethan looked over the template cards in his hand: one god-tier card, two demigod-tier cards, and six cards that could be inherited directly.
[Twisted Fate, the Card Master] template card
[Lucian, the Purifier] template card
[Malphite, Shard of the Monolith] template card
[Viktor, the Machine Herald] template card
[Syndra, the Dark Sovereign] template card
The other demigod card was one Ethan had never seen coming: [Frieza].
[Frieza]: A character from the world of Dragon Ball. A cold, merciless emperor of the universe who will stop at nothing to expand his power and conquer the cosmos.
Ethan had never imagined that Frieza, legendary for his cruelty and power, could reach such a high level.
"Frieza's finally made something of himself!" Ethan couldn't help remarking.
The original Frieza definitely wouldn't have reached demigod level. But Golden Frieza? Demigod was actually within reach.
Having taken stock of this unexpected bounty of template cards, Ethan's feelings turned complicated.
He stood under the dim light, gripping the cards, each full of limitless possibility. He felt both anticipation and unease. For the first time, he understood that having too many choices could be a sweet kind of burden.
Template cards still needed the right match, after all.
For some, Ethan already had suitable candidates in mind. For others, he hadn't thought of anyone yet, but he could leave those to the System's matching.
[Malphite, Shard of the Monolith], for instance, was perfect for Ben, the Thing of the Fantastic Four, who was now at Hell's Kitchen Community School. A flawless fit.
For [Twisted Fate, the Card Master], the first person Ethan thought of was Gambit. But Gambit wasn't Family yet, so there was no way to give it to him.
For [Lucian, the Purifier], Ethan figured the best match would be the Punisher. Both had lost their wives and both fought with pistols. Lucian was maybe a little better-looking.
As for the remaining cards, Ethan hadn't thought of anyone yet. He planned to let the System match them.
So he took a deep breath and gave the System the command: "System, I want to use all the template cards. Automatically find the Family members with the highest match rates for each one."
「DING!」
「Automatically searching for Family members with high match rates for the Host's template cards.」
「Match found! Host's Family member Ben Grimm has a match rate of 101%. Use the [Malphite, Shard of the Monolith] template card?」
「Match found! Two of the Host's Family members match: Tony Stark at 80%, and Otto Gunther Octavius at 75%. Use the [Viktor, the Machine Herald] template card?」
「Match found! Host's Family member Wilson Fisk has a match rate of 85%. Use the [Frieza] template card?」
「[Twisted Fate, the Card Master]: no match found.」
「Match found! Stephen Strange has a match rate of 80% with [Ryze, the Rune Mage] and 85% with [Ekko, the Boy Who Shattered Time].」
「Match found! Host's Family member Wanda Django Maximoff has a match rate of 85%. Use the [Syndra, the Dark Sovereign] template card?」
Ethan raised an eyebrow as notification after notification came in.
The matching was a little different from before this time.
"So how should I choose?"
