Chapter 33 - Bamboo breathing

Here's the continuation in the same style, as a writing block.

The demon's body swelled even more.

"...Blood Bomb."

My eyes widened.

"Oh no."

A split second later—

BOOOOOOM!!

His entire body exploded.

Chunks of flesh and blood shot across the battlefield like thousands of deadly bullets.

But I was faster.

Without thinking, I left my katana buried in the demon's chest and sprinted toward everyone.

"GET DOWN!"

I threw Tobisa to the ground.

Then Marie.

Then the terrified Mist Breathing user.

One by one, I pushed everyone flat onto the ground.

The pieces of flesh whistled over our heads, smashing into trees and rocks.

For a second...

I thought we had survived.

Then every piece of flesh began moving.

They crawled across the ground...

Jumped through the air...

And started sticking back together.

"Damn!"

I immediately ran back toward my katana.

If I could attack before he regenerated—

BAM!

A fist slammed into my ribs.

I was sent flying across the battlefield.

I crashed through a tree before rolling across the ground.

"Agh..."

I could barely breathe.

Every breath sent pain through my chest.

"I think..."

"...I broke a rib."

Maybe two.

The demon calmly pulled my black katana out of his chest.

He looked at it for a moment before casually kicking it several metres behind him.

The blade spun across the ground before stopping.

The demon smirked.

"You want it?"

He spread his arms.

"Come and get it."

I tried standing.

My legs shook.

Pain shot through my side.

I collapsed back onto one knee.

"Damn it..."

I couldn't move.

Not fast enough.

Not anymore.

Then...

A boy stepped forward.

He looked about my age.

He had messy dark-green hair and calm eyes.

Nobody seemed to know who he was.

He walked straight toward the demon.

"Give me that katana," he said calmly.

The demon laughed.

"Oh?"

"You think I'm just going to hand it over?"

He swung his fist.

The boy instantly rolled beneath the punch and slid toward the katana.

His fingers wrapped around the handle.

"Got it—"

"AAH!"

He immediately let go.

Smoke rose from his hands.

They had been burned.

I suddenly remembered something Senjuro had told me.

"Those who aren't acknowledged by a weapon cannot wield it."

"The same rule applies to both katanas and guns."

The boy stared at his burned hands.

For a moment...

He didn't move.

Then he slowly reached for the sword again.

Marie looked confused.

"What's he doing?"

"He'll burn himself again," Tobisa muttered.

The boy ignored everyone.

He grabbed the handle once more.

This time...

The burning slowly stopped.

The pain faded.

The silver blade began changing.

Dark black...

Slowly shifted into a deep teal colour.

The boy smiled.

"So..."

"You've accepted me."

He drew the katana.

The demon's smile disappeared.

"...Impossible."

The boy lowered his stance.

A calm breeze passed through the battlefield.

"Bamboo Breathing..."

The leaves around him rustled.

"Fifth Form..."

He launched himself high into the air.

"...Stilts!"

In an instant, he descended like a spear.

His blade flashed several times.

SLASH!

SLASH!

SLASH!

He landed gracefully behind the demon.

The cuts were shallow.

Almost harmless.

The demon laughed.

"That's it?"

But the boy didn't answer.

He simply turned around and raised the teal katana once more.

The real battle...

Had just begun.

Meanwhile, Marie knelt beside me.

"Hold still."

She carefully wrapped a bandage around my ribs.

"This is going to hurt."

"It already does," I groaned.

Tobisa stood in front of us, keeping his eyes on the battle.

For the first time since entering the Final Selection...

Someone other than me...

Was fighting the strongest demon we'd ever seen.
