The young man pounded his fist on the table, gaining everyone's attention. "My name is Kael, you may call me Instructor Kael, and I'm going to be the magic combat instructor for the next five years. I will be the one to introduce the magic department for this week." Although he was smiling, one could see that he was slightly uninterested.
Then he started to talk, "As you all have probably heard, the magic department is about making use of spirit magic, which is our natural affinity as elves. There are various affinities for spirit magic; for example, some resonate more with fire spirits, while others resonate more with earth spirits. There are many types of affinities; the most common ones are the four main elements: water, fire, earth, and wind. However, there are also unique ones like lightning, ice, space, time, sound, and many others, which are rare. Dual affinities are even more rare, and I doubt anyone here will have it. Today, we will be finding out your affinities. On your tables, there is a magic orb for each ten of you, so take turns. To use it, just put your hand over it; the orb will automatically do its job for you. Go ahead." After he finished, the magic orbs really appeared. He then walked around, taking a peek at the results here and there.
In Ash's group, there were Ash, Alice, her friend, and seven other students. All of them wanted to go first, so Alice calmed all of them down and made sure they went one by one. The first student showed the color red, which probably meant fire affinity. The second was green. When she asked the instructor, he said it was healing affinity, which she obviously looked unhappy with. The rest of the students tried it, with most of them getting the four main elements. When it was Alice's turn, everyone was anticipating the results.
As she put her hand on the orb, colors started forming, then a dark red color appeared.
Instructor Kael, who was just passing by, turned in surprise, "What's this?" He then cast some magic, then his eyes opened wide, "!!!"
Everyone turned to see the commotion that was caused.
"A unique affinity! How long has it been since one appeared in our academy? Alice Rothton, is it? No wonder, you're from a duchy family. I can sense your affinity is a very powerful one; it's probably related to fire like the Rothton family affinity, although you would have to go to the magic research division to know the details. Alice, you have to join the magic combat division, okay?" After he said that, he left, leaving the rest of the students stunned.
"That's a unique affinity?"
"Yeah, I heard it was rare; there are only a few in one generation."
"To think there's one in our academy!"
Everyone started to talk about her. Meanwhile, the girl they were talking about was instead looking at Asher arrogantly, as if saying, 'See? I'm just naturally better.'
Ash rolled his eyes and approached the orb himself, which had already gone dark when Alice removed her hand. When the colors formed, it showed the orb was divided into two colors, white and black.
"…Two colors?" A student who was in his group spoke out, gaining Instructor Kael's attention once again.
"Did someone just say two colors?" When the instructor approached, the face he showed was even more shocked, "H-How is this possible?" He was too stunned to speak, "A dual affinity?! No, what's more unreasonable is that the affinities are opposing elements! Light and dark affinity, it's like trying to make fire and water exist together!" He started to yap about everything he knew about magic before, "Asher Alder? From the Baron family huh, I heard you were adopted. How is it even possible for such a talent?"
At last, he finally calmed himself down, and his eyes turned serious. "Asher, your potential is once in a century. However, you must still train hard. If you don't nurture this talent well, it will just be useless, understood?"
"…Yes." Ash could feel his excitement, but also calmed himself down.
Looking at his side, he saw Alice, who was pouting. At the same time, her eyes were burning with jealousy, "…Just cause you have talent doesn't mean you're better."
"Yeah, yeah." Ash found himself liking her a bit, not realizing the small smile he had on his face.
"Asher, after this, follow me to the magic research department alright?" Instructor Kael patted Ash's shoulder.
"Alright." After he said that, Instructor Kael left, and the rest of the students were even more stunned than before. Soon, the crowd erupted with noise; everyone was talking about Ash's dual affinity.
The condition continued till the class had ended, and some students still talked about him.
Meanwhile Ash, who was the center of attention, just exited the class and followed Instructor Kael to the magic research division. He was also curious about his own affinities.
