Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Herding Pattern

The silence didn't mean safety.

Vinh kept his eyes on the cave entrance.

"…It's gone…"

A whisper.

Uncertain.

Hongco didn't move.

Her gaze stayed fixed.

"…No."

Flat.

Immediate.

"…It's still here."

A pause.

"…Just farther."

Vinh's fingers tightened slightly.

"…You're sure?"

Hongco exhaled slowly.

"…It didn't find us."

"…That doesn't mean it stopped looking."

Silence.

Heavy.

Vinh shifted.

"…That thing…"

"…what was it?"

Hongco didn't answer right away.

"…Not a simple predator."

A pause.

"…It doesn't hunt with sight."

Vinh frowned.

"…Then how—"

"Heat."

A beat.

"Vibration."

Another.

"…Energy."

The words settled.

Slow.

Uncomfortable.

Vinh's breath changed.

Slightly.

"…Then…"

Hongco turned to him.

"…Your sound."

A pause.

"…can expose us."

Silence.

Vinh didn't respond.

But something inside him—

tightened.

"…So I'm the problem."

Hongco didn't deny it.

"…Right now."

No comfort.

Only truth.

Time passed.

Neither of them moved much.

Then—

Something shifted.

Not a sound.

Not exactly.

The water in the cave—

rippled.

Slight.

Unnatural.

Vinh's eyes narrowed.

"…Did you see—"

"Quiet."

Hongco's hand lifted slightly.

Stopping him.

The glow outside—

changed.

The plants pulsed.

Brighter.

Then dim.

Then—

Bright again.

"…It's not random…"

Hongco whispered.

"…They're reacting."

"…To what?"

A pause.

Long.

"…To us."

Vinh's heartbeat rose again.

"…So we're being watched…"

Hongco didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Vinh's gaze moved toward the cave entrance.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Nothing.

Still nothing.

"…If it tracks vibration…"

He exhaled.

Controlled.

"…Then I can test it."

Hongco's eyes snapped to him.

"…Don't."

Too late.

A faint pulse left Vinh's body.

Barely audible.

A ripple.

Through the air.

Silence.

Nothing happened.

For one second.

Two.

Three—

Then—

The forest lit up.

Not gently.

Violently.

Dozens—

No.

Hundreds—

Of lights.

Eyes.

They opened.

All at once.

"…Tch—"

Vinh froze.

"…That wasn't one…"

Hongco grabbed his arm.

Hard.

"Run."

No hesitation.

They moved.

Fast.

Branches snapped.

Leaves tore.

Behind them—

Movement.

Everywhere.

Not chasing.

Closing.

"…They're not attacking…!"

Vinh shouted.

Hongco's eyes narrowed.

"…I know."

A pause.

"…They're guiding us."

"…What?"

Too late to question.

The forest shifted.

Paths narrowed.

Space tightened.

Every direction—

blocked.

Except one.

"…Forward."

They had no choice.

They ran.

The ground changed.

Less roots.

More stone.

The glow—

faded.

Then—

Darkness.

They broke through.

An open area.

Empty.

Too empty.

Vinh stopped.

Breathing hard.

"…Why did they—"

Hongco didn't answer.

Her eyes were fixed ahead.

"…Because…"

A pause.

Cold.

"…this is where they stop."

Vinh followed her gaze.

At the center—

Something stood there.

Not moving.

But—

The air around it—

bent.

Distorted.

"…That's not a predator…"

Hongco whispered.

"…That's something else."

Behind them—

The forest went silent.

The eyes—

disappeared.

They weren't being hunted.

They were being delivered.
