Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Something Took Notice

They didn't leave immediately.

Not after that fight.

Not after finally getting food.

Vinh knelt on the sand.

Using only his right hand—

he gathered the remaining flesh.

Slow.

Unsteady.

His left arm—

was still wrapped in that thing.

It wasn't bleeding anymore.

But it wasn't an arm either.

Just something—

forming.

"…We should keep this…"

His voice was low.

"…in case we don't find anything later."

Hongco didn't answer.

She wasn't looking at the food.

Her eyes—

scanned the forest behind them.

"…The smell is too strong."

Vinh paused.

"…You think something will come?"

A silence.

"…Something always does."

A faint sound.

Not loud.

Just—

wrong.

Vinh frowned.

"…Did you hear that?"

No answer.

He looked up.

Hongco had already moved.

Not away.

Closer.

But lower.

Her body shifted down.

Completely silent.

Her eyes—

sharp.

She raised her hand.

A signal.

Don't move.

Don't speak.

Vinh froze.

"…?"

He didn't fully understand—

but he obeyed.

The forest behind them—

was too quiet.

No insects.

No wind.

Nothing.

Like something had already cleared the area.

Hongco's gaze shifted.

Slightly.

Not toward the front.

But—

to the side.

Something moved.

Too fast to see clearly.

Just a blur.

Vinh's chest tightened.

"…What is that…?"

No response.

Only silence.

Then—

he saw it.

A shape.

Half-hidden behind a rock.

Still.

Watching.

Not moving like the others.

Not reacting.

Just—

observing.

"…It's not attacking…"

Vinh whispered.

Hongco's voice came out low.

Almost a breath.

"…Because it's not hunting."

A pause.

"…Then what is it doing…?"

"…Learning."

That word—

felt heavier than anything else.

The creature moved.

Slowly.

Closer.

Not charging.

Not threatening.

Deliberate.

Measured.

Its movement—

too controlled.

Too aware.

Vinh's fingers twitched.

Instinct.

Fight.

But—

Hongco's hand pressed down.

Firm.

Don't.

The creature stopped.

Right at the edge of their reach.

Close enough—

for Vinh to feel it.

Its presence—

heavy.

Silent.

Then—

it moved.

Not toward them.

Toward the food.

Vinh tensed.

His right hand tightened.

But he didn't act.

The creature lowered itself.

Paused.

As if—

thinking.

Then—

it took a piece.

Not all.

Just one.

Then stepped back.

Still watching them.

Still silent.

Then—

it turned.

And disappeared.

No sound.

No trace.

Gone.

Vinh exhaled.

Only then realizing—

he had been holding his breath.

"…It didn't attack…"

Hongco didn't relax.

Her eyes remained fixed—

on where it vanished.

"…That's worse."

A pause.

"…It knows we're here."

Vinh swallowed.

"…And it chose not to kill us…"

Hongco shook her head slightly.

"…No."

Her voice was quiet.

"…It chose to remember us."

The wind finally moved again.

Light.

But different.

They weren't alone.

And whatever that thing was—

it wasn't just another creature.

It had seen them.

And decided—

they were worth noticing.
