I stared at my phone screen, the silence on the other end mocking me with each unanswered ring.
Benedict's venomous threats from our last conversation still echoed in my mind. The man's voice had spiraled into something unrecognizable, each word dripping with malice and barely contained rage. When Benedict lost his grip on sanity, blood inevitably followed. The thought sent ice through my veins.
But Genevieve remained unreachable.
My fingers gripped the device harder. This marked another attempt. The count felt irrelevant when each call ended the same way - endless ringing followed by her polite, recorded voice asking me to leave a message. As if the world hadn't shifted beneath our feet. As if danger wasn't circling our family like hungry wolves.
I found myself grateful for my wife's absence.
