Chapter 89 - The Fear They Couldn't Say

The battlefield was collapsing faster now.

Entire sections of fractured terrain disappeared into distorted voids while corrupted flame and frozen debris rained endlessly from the shattered sky. The curse consuming the Divine forces had destabilized the war beyond recovery.

Reality itself was beginning to fail.

But the pressure from the Divines continued rising.

Higher.

Heavier.

More desperate.

At the center of the collapsing battlefield, Kael steadied himself despite the injury spreading through his domain connection. The distortion around his shoulder had darkened visibly now, unstable space flickering uncontrollably around the wound.

Elara saw all of it.

And the fear inside her only worsened.

"You need to stop moving," she said quietly.

Kael kept his eyes on the Divine formation ahead.

"We don't have time for that."

"You keep saying that like your condition doesn't matter."

"It doesn't."

Her expression tightened immediately.

"That's a lie."

For a brief moment, Kael went silent.

Not because she was wrong.

Because she understood him too well now.

Riven stood nearby, exhausted but alert, watching both of them carefully.

And once again—

he could feel the tension between them growing stronger than the battlefield itself.

The Inferno Monarch's cursed flames surged violently across the sky.

"Your resistance ends here."

All five Divine forces expanded their power simultaneously.

The pressure nearly shattered the remaining domain instantly.

Riven staggered.

"…Okay," he breathed, "that's definitely worse."

The Soul Hall authority stepped forward through distorted space.

"The Eclipse bloodline will not be permitted to continue."

At the mention of the bloodline, Riven's expression darkened again.

Fear flickered through him briefly.

Kael noticed immediately.

But before he could speak—

Elara stepped closer to Riven first.

"Look at me."

Riven blinked slightly.

"You are not him," she said firmly.

The words struck harder than she expected.

Because deep down—

Riven had needed someone to say it.

His breathing steadied slightly after that.

"…You're getting really good at emotional speeches," he muttered weakly.

Elara almost smiled.

Then the battlefield exploded again.

The Divines attacked together.

Flame, frost, shadow, and authority crashed downward like the end of the world itself.

Kael expanded the domain instantly.

Elara reinforced him.

Riven stabilized the outer fractures.

The collision shattered reality across the battlefield.

This time—

even Kael dropped slightly to one knee from the impact.

"Kael!"

Elara immediately reached for him.

But before she could fully support him—

the Inferno Monarch appeared directly in front of them.

Fast.

Too fast.

Cursed flames erupted toward Kael at point-blank range.

Elara reacted instinctively.

She stepped in front of him.

The flames collided with her frozen defense violently.

The impact shattered the frost instantly.

Elara gasped sharply as the force threw her backward.

"Elara!"

Kael's voice broke harder than intended.

Something inside him snapped.

The domain exploded outward.

Not controlled.

Not calm.

Violent.

For the first time since the war began—

Kael looked genuinely furious.

Distorted space surged across the battlefield with overwhelming pressure, forcing even the Divine forces backward slightly.

Riven stared in shock.

"…I have never seen him that angry…"

Kael stepped forward slowly.

Dangerously.

The fractured space around him trembled like reality itself feared getting too close.

"You will stop targeting her."

The Inferno Monarch's cursed flames intensified.

"She is your weakness."

"No," Kael answered coldly.

"She is the reason I'm still holding back."

The battlefield froze.

Even Elara looked stunned.

Because this time—

there was no misunderstanding his words.

No emotional distance left.

Kael himself seemed to realize too late what he had revealed.

But he didn't take it back.

Elara's heartbeat became painfully unsteady.

Not because of the battle.

Because for the first time in her life—

someone had chosen her over war itself.

The Divine forces attacked again immediately.

But now Kael fought differently.

More aggressively.

More personally.

The battlefield distorted violently as he tore through incoming attacks instead of simply defending against them.

Elara watched him carefully through the chaos.

And suddenly—

she became afraid of something new.

Not losing him.

What he might become if the war kept taking pieces of him away.

Riven noticed it too.

The colder Kael became toward the battlefield—

the more human he became only around Elara.

And that imbalance was becoming dangerous.

The curse consuming the Divine forces spread further again, black fractures now covering nearly half of the Inferno Monarch's immortal form.

Yet instead of retreating—

the Divines pushed harder.

Because they understood the truth now.

Kael and Elara together were becoming something the system could no longer control.

The sky cracked violently above the battlefield.

Then the system voice echoed again:

"Emergency execution sequence initiated."

Every Divine force stopped moving for half a second.

Even they looked surprised.

Kael's expression darkened immediately.

"That's not normal."

The Soul Hall authority looked toward the collapsing sky.

Then for the first time—

its calm voice carried uncertainty.

"The system is intervening directly."
