Chapter 87 - The Thing They Couldn't Hide Anymore

The battlefield had become quieter again.

Not because the war had slowed—

but because both sides were reaching dangerous limits.

The Divine forces remained suspended above the shattered remains of the battlefield, their immortal forms visibly corrupted now by the spreading curse of the Immortal Stones. Black fractures moved through flame, frost, shadow, and authority like cracks in existence itself.

Yet despite the damage—

their power still continued rising.

Below them, the fractured domain struggled to remain stable.

And at its center—

Kael leaned slightly against Elara.

Only slightly.

But enough for her to feel how unstable his breathing had become.

The attack he blocked earlier had struck directly through the domain connection.

He was hiding the damage.

Badly.

"Elara," he said quietly, trying to straighten himself again, "I'm fine."

"You need to stop saying that."

His expression almost shifted.

Almost.

But before he could answer—

another wave of pressure spread across the battlefield.

The Divines were preparing again.

Riven looked between the two of them and sighed dramatically.

"You know, at this point I'm honestly more stressed about your relationship than the war."

Elara immediately stepped back from Kael.

"We do not have a relationship."

"That sounded extremely defensive."

Kael looked away completely.

Which somehow made it worse.

Riven stared at both of them in disbelief.

"You're kidding."

"This isn't important right now," Kael answered calmly.

"That is exactly what people say before something becomes very important."

Despite the chaos surrounding them, Elara almost laughed.

And Kael noticed.

That small expression—

brief and soft—

caught his attention more than it should have.

Elara noticed him noticing.

Then immediately looked away.

The battlefield suddenly felt strangely smaller.

The Shadow presence observed from above silently.

"They continue forming emotional dependency."

The Soul Hall authority responded:

"Then their collapse is inevitable."

Kael's gaze hardened immediately.

"You speak about emotions like weakness."

"Emotions create instability," Soul Hall answered coldly.

"No," Kael replied.

The domain expanded slightly around him again.

"They create reasons."

For a brief second—

even the battlefield itself seemed to pause.

Elara looked toward him slowly.

Because that answer wasn't only directed at the Divines.

Part of it was directed at her.

The Inferno Monarch's cursed flames exploded violently again, shattering the silence.

"Enough."

The final assault began instantly.

All five Divine forces attacked together again—

stronger than before.

The battlefield erupted into destruction.

Flames collapsed downward like meteors.

Frozen spears pierced through distorted space.

Shadow erased visibility entirely.

Authority crushed the domain from above.

Kael immediately expanded control.

Elara reinforced him.

Riven defended the outer fractures.

But this time—

the pressure was different.

The Divines were no longer trying to overpower them slowly.

They were trying to destroy them completely.

The collision shook the battlefield violently.

Cracks spread across the domain faster than Elara could stabilize them.

Kael's breathing worsened immediately.

And Elara saw it.

He was reaching his limit.

"Kael—"

"I know."

Yet he still pushed forward.

Still carried the center of the battlefield alone.

Something inside Elara tightened painfully.

Because she suddenly realized the truth:

Kael had already accepted the possibility of destroying himself to protect them.

And he would never say it out loud.

The pressure intensified again.

The domain cracked violently.

Riven staggered backward after blocking another Shadow distortion.

"We can't hold this forever!"

Kael looked toward the Divine forces calmly despite the instability around him.

"We don't need forever."

Then—

he stepped forward.

Directly toward the center of the Divine assault.

Elara's eyes widened immediately.

"What are you doing?"

"Changing the battlefield."

The domain around Kael suddenly darkened.

Not unstable this time.

Focused.

Dangerously focused.

The Divine forces reacted instantly.

"His output is increasing."

"But his stability is collapsing," Cryomix observed.

They were both right.

Kael was forcing the domain beyond safe limits.

Elara immediately moved after him.

"You can't do this alone."

"I wasn't planning to."

That answer stopped her for half a second.

Then she stepped beside him again.

Naturally.

Like she already belonged there.

The battlefield trembled violently as their powers aligned once more.

This time stronger than ever before.

Riven watched silently behind them.

And despite everything—

he smiled.

Because the distance between Kael and Elara had finally disappeared.

Not fully spoken.

Not fully understood.

But impossible to hide now.

Even from themselves.

The Divines attacked.

Kael and Elara answered together.

The collision shattered the battlefield completely.

And in the middle of war, destruction, fear, and collapsing reality—

the thing both of them had tried hardest to ignore finally became undeniable.

They no longer fought beside each other because they had to.

They fought beside each other because losing the other had become unthinkable.
