CHAPTER 66: THE TRUTH ABOUT MARCUS

The green light is still burning.

I stand at the edge of the copper plate, my boots frozen to the floor, staring at the terminal screen as those two words pulse against the dark like a wound that refuses to close. Eleanor Morriston. The name sits in my chest like a piece of broken glass, turning slowly, cutting everything it touches.

"Someone wants to explain that to me," Ariana says behind me, her voice stripped of every ounce of its usual bite. She sounds the way I feel. Like the floor just fell away and we are both still waiting to hit the ground.

Nobody answers.

I turn around slowly. Marcus is standing at the edge of the server column, his ballistic mask hanging from his hand, his dark eyes fixed on the terminal screen with an expression I cannot read. Not guilt. Not surprising. Something older than both of those things. Something that looks almost like grief.

"Marcus," I say quietly.

He doesn't look at me.

"Marcus." Louder this time..
