CHAPTER 54: MURDER PAINTED AS SUICIDE
"Get away from the window " I whispered to Ariana, my hand reaching out to grab her leather sleeve.
The front door creaked again. Ariana did not move right away. Her shoulders were frozen under my touch. Her eyes were fixed on the dark glass where the rain was pouring down.
"What if it is not the wind?" Ariana whispered back her voice tight with worry.
"Then we will deal with it " I said quietly.
"Easy for you to say " Ariana replied, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
Patricia was sitting rigidly in her rocking chair her fingers digging into her wool shawl. Her knuckles looked like bone under the yellow lamp.
"Ariana " Ariana muttered, her voice. Sharp as she pulled her arm away from my grip. "I am not getting caught by guys with iron pipes again. If someone is outside that door I am taking the fire poker."
". What will you do with it?" I asked quietly.
"I will hit whoever comes through that door " Ariana said, her jaw set.
