Chapter 11 - Silent Lives, Hidden Battles

Surviving the Unseen Struggles

Part 1: Smiles They Don't Question

The city woke up before the sun.

By the time the sky turned pale blue, the streets were already alive. Buses roared through crowded roads, shopkeepers lifed their shutters and people rushed past each other with purpose in their eyes.

Everything looked normal.

Everything sounded normal.

But not everything was okay.

Arif stood in front of a cracked mirror, adjusting the collar of his faded shirt.

He forced a smile.

Held it for a few seconds.

Then let it fade.

"Good enough," he muttered.

It didn't have to be real.

It just had to look real.

At twenty-three, Arif carried more than most people his age.

He was a university student

But that was only one part of his life.

He worked as a private tutor.

He worked part-time at a clothing store.

And most importantly-

He was the only person holding his family together.

His father had passed away years ago.

Since then, everything had changed.

His mother had fallen sick.

His younger brother was still in school.

There was no backup.

No support.

Just Arif.

"Are you leaving?" his mother's weak voice came from behind.

Arif turned quickly.

"Yes,ma."

"At least eat something first. "

He gave a small smile.

"I'll eat outside. "

It was a lie.

But a necessary one.

There wasn't enough food at home for everyone.

The moment he stepped outside, the city swallhim whole.

His day started at six in the morning.

First stop-tuition.

"Bhaiya, I don't understand this," the student said.

Arif leaned forward and explained patiently.

His voice was calm.

Because this wasn't just teaching, this was survival.

After that, he rushed to university.

He sat in class, surrounded by students who laughed, talked and took notes.

But his mind wasn't there.

The medicine is almost finished...

Rent is due next week....

What if something goes wrong.....?

The lecture's voice faded in the background.

Arif started at his notebook.

Blank.

No one noticed.

Because he never gave them a reason to.

After class, he didn't stay.

No time.

No energy.

He went straight to work.

The clothing store was bright and clean.

Soft music played in the background.

People looked happy here.

Comfortable.

"Do you have this in medium?" a customer asked.

"Yes," Arif replied.

He moved quickly.

Quickly.

Efficiently.

People came and went.

Bought things.

Left.

No one noticed him.

Until.

The door opened.

A girl walked in.

She looked confident.

Calm.

Like someone who had everything under control.

This was Nira.

She walked slowly through the store, her eyes scanning the shelves-bit not really seeing anything.

Something about her felt distant.

"Excuse me," she said.

"Do you have this in another size?"

Arif looked up.

For a moment.

Their eyes met.

Something felt different.

"I'll check, " Arif said.

A few minutes later, he returned.

"Here."

"Thank you," Nira said softly.

But she didn't leave.

She stood there for a moment.

Quite.

Then suddenly-

She asked,

"Do you ever feel tired...for no reason?"

Arif blinked.

That wasn't a normal question.

He looked at here carefully.

Her eyes.

Slightly red.

Slightly empty.

He understood.

"Not for no reason, " he replied quickly.

Nira looked at him.

Really looked.

That wasn't the answer she expected.

Most people would say

"I'm fine."

"Just tired. "

"Nothing serious. "

Bit he didn't.

And that made all the difference.

She gave a small nod.

As if something made sense.

The she left.

That night-

Arif sat at home, leaning again the wall.

The room was slient.

His mother slept beside him.

Her breathing unseen.

He opened an old notebook.

The only place where he could be honest.

He wrote."I don't remember the last time.

I felt okay. "

Then added-

"But I keep going. "

Across the city -

Nira aat in her room.

Her books were open.

But she wasn't studying.

Her fathers voice echoed in her mind.

"You're falling behind. "

"This is not. "

"You need to do better. "

She closed her eyes.

Tears slipped down silently.

She stood in front of the mirror.

Looked at herself.

"Why am I like this?" She whispered.

No answer.

She picked up her phone.

Opened her contacts.

Strolled.

Stopped.

Then-

She remembered him.

The quiet boy from store.

The one who didn't pretend.

She didn't know why-

But she typed-

"Do you ever feel like you're not enough?"

She started at the message.

Hesitated.

Then-

She pressed send.

Miles away-

Arif's phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

He read the message.

For a moment-

He didn't know what to say.

Because the truth was-

He felt that way every single day.

Slowly-

He typed-

"Yes."

And just like that-

Two strangers-

Two silent Lives,

Two unseen struggles.

Found a connection.

Not loud .

Not obvious.

But real.
