Chapter 10 - Silent Lives, Hidden Battles

Chapter 10: Choosing to Stay

Part 3:

The city looked the same.

Same noise.

Same rush.

Same endless movement .

But for some people-

everything had changed.

Tanvir stood on the bridge.

The cold wind brushed past his face, but he barely felt it .

Below him, the Dark water reflected the scattered city lights.

Everything looked distant.

Unreal.

"What's the point?" he whispered again.

His voice disappeared into the night.

No answer.

For a few seconds-

he closed his eyes.

And in that darkness, memories returned.

A classroom.

A group of friends laughing.

Books scattered across a desk.

And him-

smiling.

He opened his eyes quickly.

His chest tightened.

"Was that really me?" he murdered.

His phone buzzed again.

He almost ignored it.

But something made him look.

Another old photo.

Same time.

Same smile.

Tanvir started at it.

Then,slowly, something shifted inside him.

"If I could smile like that once...." he whispered, "maybe I can again. "

His grip on the railing loosened.

He stepped back.

One step.

Then another.

It wasn't victory.

Not yet.

Buy it was a choice.

Across the city-

Naeem sat outside the hospital.

The white walls, the smell of medicine, the quiet footsteps-everything felt heavy.

In his hand, he held a bill.

The numbers blurred as he started at it.

"I can't do this....." he whispered.

For the first time-

he allowed himself to say it.

His shoulders dropped.

His head lowered.

His phone vibrated.

Riya.

"Did you eat?" her message read.

Naeem let out a soft breath.

Even in the middle of everything-

someone thought about him.

"No," he typed.

"No really hungry. "

A few seconds later-

"Eat something. You won't survive like this. "

He started at the message.

Then smiled faintly.

"Trying," he replied.

There was a pause.

Then-

"Don't try alone."

Those three words-

hit differently.

Naeem leaned back against the wall.

For days, he had been carrying everything by himself.

The pressure.

The fear.

The exhaustion.

But maybe-

he didn't have to carry it alone.

Inside the hospital room-

His mother slept quietly.

Machines beeped softly beside her.

Naeem walked in.

Sat beside her.

Held her hand.

"I'll figure it out, " he whispered.

"I don't know how...but I will."

This time-

He didn't say it out of pressure.

He said it out of belief.

Meanwhile-

Riya stood in front of her father.

Her heart pounder loudly in her chest.

Her hands trembled slightly.

"I need to say something, " she said.

Her father looked up, surprised.

"What is it?"

Riya took a deep breath.

For years, she had stayed silent.

For years, she had tried to be perfect.

But tonight-

She couldn't anymore.

"I'm tried, " she said.

Her voice shook.

But she didn't stop.

"I'm trying my best...but it's never enough for you."

The room fell silent.

Her father frowned.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying....I'm not perfect, " Riya replied.

"And I can't be."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I just want you to see me.....not my marks."

For the first time-

She spoke her truth.

Her father didn't respond Immediately.

He just looked at her.

As if seeing her differently.

The silence stretched.

But this silence-

Wasn't suffocating.

It was changing.

Days passed.

Tanvir started working at a small garage.

The work was hard.

The pay was low.

But it was honest.

Sometimes, while fixing engines-

He would pause.

Look at his hands.

"This isn't the dream I had, " he would think.

Then he would continue working.

"But it's not the end either. "

Naeem applied for a scholarship.

He didn't expect much.

Bit he tried anyway.

At the same time, he took on extra work.

Late nights.

Early mornings.

No rest.

But something was different now.

He wasn't doing it alone.

Riya kept checking on him.

Sending small messages.

Simple words.

"Did you sleep?"

"Don't skip meals. "

"You'll get through this."

And somehow-

Those words mattered.

Riya also changed.

She didn't suddenly become confident.

She didn't stop feeling pressure.

But she started speaking.

Little by little.

And that-

Was enough.

One evening-

They finally met.

A small cafe.

Quite.

Simple.

Naeem sat at the same table where everything had started.

Riya walked in.

For a moment-

They just looked at each other.

No words.

Just understanding.

Then she smiled.

"Hi."

Naeem smiled back.

"Hi."

A few minutes later-

Another chair was pulled.

Tanvir.

They had connected through Naeem.

Through shared struggles.

Through silent understanding.

Now-

They sat together.

Three different battles.

Same story.

Riya looked at them and said softly.

"We're still struggling....."

Tanvir nodded.

"Yeah. Nothing is fixed. "

Naeem looked at both of them.

Then said-

"But we're still here."

Silence.

Then-

Riya smiled.

A real one.

"Maybe that's enough. "

Outside-

The city continued its chaos.

Cars moved.

People rushed.

Lights flickered.

No one noticed them.

No one knew their stories.

No one saw-

The battles they had fought.

But that didn't matter anymore.

Because they knew.

And sometimes-

That's all you need.

Not solutions.

Not perfection.

Just someone who understands.

Just someone who stays.

Life didn't become easy.

It didn't suddenly make sense.

But they made a choice.

To stay.

To try.

To keep going.

Even when it hurt.

Because in the end-

Strength isn't always loud.

Sometimes-

It's quite.

Sometimes-

It's just breathing through the pain.

And choosing-

Not to give up.

"Not all survivors look strong. Some just chose to stay when leaving felt easier. "

"Do you think Tanvir made the right choice on the bridge?"
