Chapter 15 - CHAPTER 15: Road to Coldbrook

They didn't stop after the bodies fell.

The elder didn't even look back.

The three corpses lay where they dropped—blood soaking slowly into the dirt, eyes still open, expressions frozen somewhere between greed and confusion.

Wei Liang walked past them.

Didn't slow.

Didn't look down.

But he remembered.

Not the killing.

The distance.

The absolute gap.

The road stretched forward.

Wider now.

More traveled.

Tracks cut into the dirt—cart wheels, hoof prints, scattered footprints layered over time.

Signs of life.

And signs of danger.

The disciples were quieter after that.

Less talk.

Less casual movement.

Even Zhao Heng would have kept his voice down here.

Wei Liang adjusted his breathing.

The air outside the sect carried more qi.

Not dense.

Not overwhelming.

But steady.

Natural.

He drew a thread of it in.

Carefully.

The Ashen Breath Method unfolded on its own.

Guiding.

Filtering.

The qi entered smoother than before.

Less resistance.

Less waste.

Wei Liang's steps didn't change.

But inside—

The difference was clear.

Environment matters.

The furnace had forced him to survive.

Out here—

He could grow.

They continued until dusk.

The sky dimmed slowly.

Shadows stretched across the road.

The air cooled.

Finally—

The elder stopped.

"We rest here."

A small clearing.

Not ideal.

But visible from all sides.

The disciples began preparing quickly.

One gathered wood.

The other checked the perimeter.

Wei Liang stood still for a moment.

Then moved.

Not to help.

But not to stand idle either.

He collected smaller branches.

Stacked them neatly.

Kept movements simple.

Unremarkable.

The fire was lit.

Low.

Controlled.

They ate in silence.

Dry rations.

Hard.

Tasteless.

Wei Liang chewed slowly.

Listening.

Not to conversation.

To the night.

The forest wasn't quiet.

It never was.

Wind.

Leaves.

Distant movement.

But beneath it—

Something else.

Faint.

Wei Liang's gaze shifted slightly.

Still watching.

Not the same as before.

Not as close.

But present.

He lowered his head again.

Didn't react.

Not targeting us directly.

Not yet.

The elder sat near the fire.

Eyes closed.

But—

Not asleep.

Wei Liang noticed the difference.

Breathing too even.

Too controlled.

He knows.

Which meant—

This was allowed.

Wei Liang finished eating.

Moved to the edge of the clearing.

Sat down.

Back against a tree.

Closed his eyes.

But didn't rest.

He cultivated.

The qi flowed naturally now.

Cleaner than before.

More responsive.

He guided it slowly.

Cycle after cycle.

Then—

He stopped.

Something felt… off.

Not outside.

Inside.

Wei Liang's awareness shifted inward.

The pagoda.

It stood unchanged.

First floor open.

Second—

Still sealed.

But now—

There was pressure.

Faint.

But real.

Like something pushing—

From inside.

Wei Liang frowned slightly.

"…Already?"

He had only just stabilized.

Too soon for another reward.

Too soon for advancement.

Which meant—

This wasn't a gift.

It was—

A response.

Wei Liang opened his eyes.

The fire crackled softly.

The disciples were settling.

The elder remained still.

And beyond the trees—

Something moved.

This time—

He saw it.

A shadow.

Low.

Fast.

Gone in an instant.

Wei Liang didn't react outwardly.

But his thoughts aligned immediately.

Not human.

Movement too fluid.

Too quiet.

A beast.

And not a weak one.

The forest shifted again.

This time—

Closer.

One of the disciples stiffened slightly.

"…Did you hear that?"

The other shook his head.

"Just wind."

It wasn't.

The elder's voice cut through the darkness.

"Stay alert."

No panic.

Just—

Fact.

Wei Liang's fingers pressed lightly against the ground.

It's circling.

Not attacking.

Not yet.

Waiting.

Testing.

Just like—

Him.

Wei Liang's breathing slowed further.

If it attacked—

The elder would handle it.

Just like the bandits.

Which meant—

He wouldn't need to act.

But that didn't mean—

He shouldn't prepare.

His body shifted slightly.

Subtle.

Balanced.

The movement patterns from the training ground surfaced in his mind.

Refined.

Adjusted.

His weight centered.

His stance—

Ready.

Not to fight.

To survive.

The forest fell quiet.

Too quiet.

Then—

A low growl.

Close.

The disciples froze.

The fire flickered.

Wei Liang didn't move.

Because now—

The real test had arrived.

And somewhere deep inside—

The pagoda stirred.

As if—

It had been waiting for this exact moment.
