Chapter 19 - CHAPTER 19: Wedding Without Celebration

There was no celebration.

No music.

No laughter.

The Shen Estate remained as it always was—

Quiet.

Ordered.

Unmoved.

Wei Liang stood in the inner hall.

Wearing new robes.

Clean.

Unfamiliar.

They fit his body—

But not his position.

Around him, members of the Shen Family gathered.

Not many.

Only those who needed to be present.

No outsiders.

No guests.

This wasn't a wedding.

It was a transaction.

"Proceed," an elder said calmly.

A servant stepped forward.

Placed two cups on the table.

Wine.

Not ceremonial.

Not special.

Just—

Necessary.

Wei Liang picked one up.

His movements steady.

Measured.

Across from him—

Shen Yuxiu did the same.

Her expression hadn't changed since yesterday.

Still calm.

Still distant.

Their eyes met briefly.

No warmth.

No hesitation.

Only understanding.

This means nothing.

They drank.

That was all.

No vows.

No promises.

The elder nodded once.

"Done."

Just like that—

It was over.

Wei Liang was now—

Shen Yuxiu's husband.

And yet—

Nothing had changed.

"Follow me," Shen Yuxiu said.

She turned.

Didn't wait.

Wei Liang followed.

Through the corridors.

Past silent servants.

Past closed doors.

Until they reached a courtyard.

Smaller.

Secluded.

"This will be your residence," she said.

Not "ours."

Your.

Wei Liang noted it.

Stored it.

Accepted it.

He stepped inside.

Simple.

Clean.

Empty.

A bed.

A table.

Nothing more.

"You will not interfere in family matters," Shen Yuxiu said.

Her voice calm.

Flat.

"You will not leave the estate without permission."

Wei Liang nodded.

"You will not speak in my name."

Another nod.

A pause.

Then—

She looked at him directly.

This time—

Longer.

"…And you will not die unnecessarily."

Wei Liang's gaze flickered slightly.

Not expected.

But—

Logical.

"If you die," she continued, "this arrangement becomes meaningless."

There it is.

Wei Liang inclined his head slightly.

"I understand."

Silence.

Then—

She turned.

Left.

Just like that.

No further words.

No interest.

Wei Liang stood alone in the courtyard.

The air here was different.

Still.

Heavy.

Controlled.

He exhaled slowly.

Then—

Sat.

Not to rest.

To think.

Position:

Lowest.

Status:

Disposable.

Environment:

Hostile.

System:

Silent.

Wei Liang's eyes closed.

Good.

Because now—

Everything was clear.

No confusion.

No illusion.

Only reality.

And reality—

Could be used.

His awareness shifted inward.

The pagoda.

The second floor—

Still cracked.

Waiting.

Wei Liang studied it for a moment.

"…Not yet."

Because rushing—

Meant failure.

And failure—

Meant death.

He opened his eyes again.

The courtyard remained silent.

Unchanging.

But beneath that silence—

Wei Liang could already feel it.

Pressure.

From the estate.

From the people.

From the unseen forces moving behind everything.

This place—

Was more dangerous than the sect.

Which meant—

Better.

Wei Liang's lips moved slightly.

"Let's begin."
