Chapter 27 - Chapter 27- Graduation Day

Graduation day arrived faster than anyone expected.

It felt like just yesterday they were complaining about homework, sleeping during class, and writing small messages on the corner of the last row desk.

Now the classroom looked different.

No textbooks stacked everywhere.

No homework written on the board.

No teachers telling them to be quiet.

Only empty desks, packed bags, and students walking around asking each other to sign their uniforms and yearbooks.

Su Ran was writing a message on a classmate's shirt when Zhao Ming suddenly appeared behind her and wrote in big letters on her sleeve:

"Do not forget Zhao Ming, future rich man."

"You wrote so big!" she said.

"So you cannot forget me," he replied.

She took the pen and wrote on his shirt:

"Please study in university."

"This is an attack," he said.

Jiang Chen was sitting at his seat in the last row, writing something in a small notebook.

Zhao Ming walked over and looked at him.

"You look like the main character in a graduation movie."

Jiang Chen closed the notebook.

"I'm just writing something."

"Love letter?" Zhao Ming asked immediately.

"No," Jiang Chen replied.

"I don't believe you," Zhao Ming said.

The Graduation Ceremony

The graduation ceremony was held in the school hall.

Students sat in rows while teachers gave long speeches about the future, hard work, dreams, and growing up.

Zhao Ming whispered,

"If this speech gets any longer, I will graduate as an old man."

"Be quiet," Su Ran whispered back.

When their class was called one by one to go on stage and receive their graduation certificates, everything suddenly felt real.

When Su Ran's name was called, she walked across the stage, received the certificate, and bowed slightly.

When Jiang Chen's name was called, everyone clapped louder because he was one of the top students.

Zhao Ming clapped the loudest and even whistled.

When Zhao Ming's name was called, he walked across the stage like he was accepting an award at a movie ceremony.

Su Ran covered her face because she was laughing.

Back to the Classroom One Last Time

After the ceremony, students went back to their classroom one last time to collect their things.

The classroom felt strange.

Too clean.

Too quiet.

Too empty.

Su Ran walked to the last row and touched the desk where they had written their small message months ago.

Last Row Trio was here.

Do not forget.

We were very happy here.

She traced the words lightly with her finger.

Zhao Ming stood behind her and said,

"Legendary location."

Jiang Chen stood next to them and looked at the desk quietly.

"No one erased it," Su Ran said.

"Of course not," Zhao Ming replied.

"They respect history."

The Last Walk Around School

Before leaving, many students walked around the school one last time. The basketball court, the library, the hallways, the places they used to complain about every day.

The three of them walked slowly around the campus.

"This place looked so big when we first came," Su Ran said.

"It looks smaller now," Zhao Ming replied.

"That's because we got bigger," he added proudly.

Jiang Chen said quietly,

"We just got used to it."

They stopped near the school gate.

The same place where they had stood after exams, after school, after festivals, after everything.

But today felt different.

Today, when they walked out, they wouldn't be students anymore.

---

Zhao Ming Leaves First

Zhao Ming suddenly looked at his phone.

"My brother is here already."

He looked at both of them and said,

"If this was a drama, this is the part where I leave and something important happens."

Su Ran laughed.

"You watch too many dramas."

He pointed at both of them again.

"I am serious. If something important happens and you don't tell me, I will be very angry."

"Go home," Jiang Chen said.

Zhao Ming looked at both of them for a few seconds, then smiled.

"Okay," he said.

"See you in the future, last row people."

Then he waved and ran toward the gate.

Now it was just Jiang Chen and Su Ran again.

---

The Confession

They stood near the school gate, not leaving yet.

Students were walking past them, taking photos, laughing, saying goodbye to teachers and friends.

But for a moment, it felt quiet where they were standing.

Su Ran looked at the school building and said softly,

"So this is really the end."

"Yes," Jiang Chen said.

She smiled a little.

"I thought I would feel happier."

"What do you feel?" he asked.

She thought for a moment.

"Like something important is ending."

He nodded.

"Yeah."

There was a small silence between them.

Then Jiang Chen spoke.

"Su Ran."

She turned to look at him.

He was holding the small notebook he had earlier.

"I wrote something," he said.

"I was going to give it to you later, but… I think I should just say it."

She didn't say anything, just waited.

He looked nervous for the first time since she had known him.

"I liked sitting in the last row because it was quiet," he said slowly.

"But after you and Zhao Ming started sitting there… I liked it because you were there."

She felt her heart start beating faster.

He continued,

"I used to think high school was just something I had to finish. Study, get good grades, go to university. That's all."

He looked at her.

"But then I met you. And Zhao Ming. And those normal days became important."

She didn't move.

He took a small breath and finally said,

"I like you, Su Ran. Not just as a friend. For a long time now."

Everything around them felt quiet again, even though the school gate was still full of students.

She looked at him, surprised but not surprised at the same time.

"You said we shouldn't pretend nothing matters," she said softly.

"Yes," he replied.

She smiled a little, a nervous but happy smile.

"Then I shouldn't pretend either," she said.

He waited.

She looked at the school building, then back at him.

"I think… somewhere along the way… you became very important to me too."

He didn't say anything, but his expression changed slightly, like he was relieved.

She continued,

"I don't know what will happen in the future. We might go to different universities, meet new people, get busy…"

He nodded.

"I know."

"But," she said, "I don't want graduation to be the end of our story."

He looked at her and said quietly,

"Then let's make sure it isn't."

She smiled.

For the first time that day, graduation didn't feel like only an ending.

It felt a little like a beginning too.

They walked out of the school gate together, not as just classmates anymore,

not just as last row friends,

but as two people who had grown up together,

and who were now walking toward the future

side by side.
