Chapter 93: "Black Glass Eyes and the First True Fracture"
Volume 5 – Exodus
Poison's eyes opened.
They were no longer gold.
They were the exact shade of the black-glass veil that sealed Kruger National Park—flat, depthless, and hungry.
Khaos Hyde froze with one chaos-wrapped fist still raised. The violet-black energy around his knuckles flickered like a candle in a sudden wind.
"Brother…?"
Poison's golden skin cracked along the jawline. Not peeling. Splitting. Thin lines of pure absence spread outward, drinking the gold the way a desert drinks rain. His voice, when it came, was two voices layered on top of each other—Poison's familiar rasp and something older that had never needed a throat.
"Khaos. Step back."
Midas's molten smile finally fractured.
"That is not possible. I own the conversion. Nothing unmakes my gold except my death."
The thing wearing Poison's body tilted its head. The black-glass eyes reflected Midas perfectly—and then reflected through him, showing the empty space where a soul should have been.
"You never owned it," the layered voice said. "You only borrowed the joke. The Garden is finished laughing."
The remaining gold on Poison's body detonated outward in a silent shockwave of reverse-conversion. Every flake of living metal in a thirty-meter radius—statues, spent bullets, the golden tears still clinging to the asphalt—remembered it had once been flesh, blood, or lead. Most of it simply collapsed into ordinary matter. A few pieces screamed as they died a second time.
Midas staggered, golden skin dulling to brass.
"No—"
Khaos moved.
Chaos energy screamed back to full strength. He closed the distance in a single blurred step and drove both fists into Midas's chest. The impact sounded like a cathedral collapsing. Midas flew backward, carving a trench through the courtyard, and slammed into the remains of the bleachers.
Callie Bryant's robot spine flared blue. She raised both hands and the alloy vertebrae along her back unfolded into a lattice of targeting lasers.
"Jordan—left flank. Garcia—keep the Jinetes off us. Syizak, with me."
Syizak's elongated limbs unfolded. Alien matter flowed like liquid night. "The gold still remembers its maker. I will remind it of fear."
At the center of the courtyard Kevin Leister felt the Mythical Matrix sing.
Not the usual hungry roar. Something sharper. The circuits under his skin brightened until the air itself tasted of ozone and old starlight. Wyatt stood at his shoulder, ordinary blood still steaming on his knuckles, eyes locked on the black-glass gaze that now belonged to Poison.
"That's not Poison anymore," Wyatt said quietly.
Kevin's Rampager form answered with a low, metallic growl that came from somewhere deeper than lungs.
"I know."
Bella's steel-edged feathers formed a defensive cyclone around the remaining students. Bandile kept the police cruiser spinning as a mobile barricade. Lucifer Jr.'s white-gold wings burned bright enough to cast no shadows. Koa's overlapping beasts prowled in tight circles, every eye fixed on the thing that had once been Poison.
Xarak the Demon Vampire had stopped smiling.
He stared at the black-glass eyes with something that almost looked like recognition.
"Detective," he said to Ava without looking away, "you should run now. The night just got older than me."
Ava Reyes chambered another round and stayed exactly where she was.
Kruger National Park – Inside the Veil
The spiral crack in the black-glass dome widened until it became a wound.
Golden light poured through—then inverted. The gold turned the same depthless black as Poison's new eyes. Hades finally stopped walking. The AK-57 hung forgotten in his hands.
Nathan Moya's remaining illusions shattered completely. He dropped to one knee, blood running from both nostrils, but his voice still cut across every open channel.
"All units—listen carefully. The Garden is no longer watching. It is reaching. Whatever just woke up inside Poison is older than the Pillar. Older than the Shattering. Do not engage directly. Buy time."
Peter Shotstock spat another mouthful of blood and tightened his grip on the scavenged axe.
"Buy time with what? Good intentions?"
Sasha's targeting data flickered back online for three precious seconds. Vera slammed another barrier into place. Thembinkosi reloaded without looking, eyes never leaving the widening crack above them.
Hades tilted his head, listening to something only he could hear.
Then he smiled—the first true smile any of them had seen on his face.
"The fence is breaking," he said softly. "And the Garden is sending its first true gardener."
The black-glass wound above Kruger tore open completely.
Something stepped through.
It had no fixed shape. It wore the suggestion of a man the way a shadow wears the suggestion of a tree—tall, barefoot, skin the colour of old ash and deep earth. Its eyes were open graves that had decided to keep watching.
Tartarus had arrived early.
Willowbrook High – Courtyard
Poison—or what had been Poison—raised one hand.
The black-glass eyes locked onto Kevin.
"Rampager," the layered voice said. "Mythical Matrix. Child of the broken Pillar. The Garden remembers the day you were chosen. It has been waiting."
Kevin's circuits blazed white-blue. The Mythical Matrix answered with a single, absolute certainty:
This is the real fight.
Wyatt stepped forward until he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Kevin.
"Then it can keep waiting."
Poison's new mouth curved into something that was not a smile.
"No," the voice said. "It cannot."
The black-glass eyes flared.
Across two continents, the veil and the courtyard became the same place for one impossible heartbeat.
And the first true fracture began.
