Chapter 92 - "Gold Tears, Broken Ties, And the Things That Refuse to Stay Dead"

Chapter 92: "Gold Tears, Broken Ties, and the Things That Refuse to Stay Dead"

Volume 5 – Exodus

The zip-ties did not break.

They melted.

Kevin Leister's Mythical Matrix answered the first real surge of gunfire that punched through the science-wing wall. Circuits of living light crawled under his skin like molten wire. The plastic restraints softened, then dripped away in smoking black strands. Beside him Wyatt's ordinary blood did something far stranger—every supernatural binding within three meters simply forgot how to hold.

Bella's feathers exploded outward in a screaming storm of steel-edged pinions. Bandile's telekinesis ripped the remaining chairs into a spinning shield. Lucifer Jr.'s gold light finally stopped leaking and roared. Koa's overlapping beasts tore free of his skin in a single violent bloom of fur, scale, and too many eyes. Huxley dragged Ben Growe behind the nearest overturned lab table and started shooting with the cold precision of someone who had already decided the body count would not include the kid.

Brihaana Armandos spun in the courtyard, shotgun still smoking, and laughed when she saw them.

"Finally. The little monsters wake up."

Kevin hit the double doors at a dead sprint. The Mythical Matrix turned the impact into a shockwave that folded the metal frames outward like wet cardboard. Wyatt was half a step behind him, already cutting a path through the nearest Jinetes with nothing but fists and the quiet certainty that ordinary blood still hurt more than any bullet.

Outside, the police line had collapsed into pure chaos. Los Jinetes Negros poured automatic fire from the rooftops. Detective Ava Reyes was halfway to the bleachers when Xarak finally moved.

He did not run.

He arrived.

One moment the Demon Vampire stood among the remaining hostages. The next he was in the center of the courtyard, red eyes bright, claws extended, and the nearest three gunmen simply ceased to be vertical. Blood sprayed in elegant arcs. Xarak licked a drop from his thumb and smiled at Ava like they were sharing a private joke.

"Detective. You look tired."

Ava did not answer. She shot him in the chest twice. The rounds punched through and kept going. Xarak's smile only widened.

Guardians of Destiny Society – Medical Wing

Khaos Hyde did not wait for permission.

He lifted the golden statue of Poison as if it weighed nothing and walked straight out of the medical wing. Chaos energy crackled around his fists in violent violet-black arcs. Callie Bryant sat up on the surgical table, robot spine humming, blue lights racing down the alloy vertebrae.

"You're going after Midas," she said. It was not a question.

"I'm going to kill the thing that turned my little brother into furniture," Khaos answered without looking back. "You can stay and heal or you can come watch me keep a promise."

Callie swung her legs off the table. Servos whispered. Pain was still there, distant and polite. She stood. The spine held.

Syizak floated a few centimeters above the floor, elongated limbs folded, obsidian eyes reflecting the chaos light.

"I will accompany you," the alien said inside their minds. "Alien matter responds poorly to gold that remembers its maker. I find this… entertaining."

Jordan Pitas cursed, grabbed a fresh set of cannons, and followed. Garcia fell in without a word. Garfield Greenbrier stayed long enough to press a small vial of glowing grass-sap into Callie's hand.

"If the gold starts spreading again, burn it from the inside."

They left the medical wing at a run that was already becoming a war party.

Kruger National Park – Inside the Veil

The black-glass dome pulsed a second time.

Reality hiccupped.

Nathan Moya's illusions fractured into a thousand screaming mirrors. Every false cover, every false target, every false hope he had woven suddenly became real for three full heartbeats—then collapsed again. Thembinkosi used the window to put two rounds into a Glimmer-born lion the size of a truck. The creature kept coming until Nathan's next illusion convinced it that its own heart had already exploded.

Hades walked through the center of Group 1 like a man strolling through light rain. The AK-57 barked. Peter Shotstock took a round through the shoulder, spat blood, and kept swinging the scavenged axe. Sasha's targeting data finally punched through the veil's corruption long enough for Vera to drop a barrier that actually held for five seconds. Hades smiled as if the effort amused him.

Group 3 finally broke Stripe.

The Colour-Factor zebra's hide shifted through every wavelength at once, then locked on ultraviolet and tried to kick Brakash's skull through the dry riverbed. Pound's old war-magic answered with a note that made the air itself bleed. Jayse the Caveman stopped bleeding long enough to drive a stone spear through the zebra's throat. Blinkstrike teleported the dying body fifty meters into the air and let gravity finish the argument.

Stripe hit the ground and stayed down.

The veil did not like that.

The black glass above them cracked in a perfect spiral. Something vast and golden pressed against the fracture from the other side.

Midas's laughter rolled across the park like molten metal.

Back at Willowbrook High the courtyard became a slaughterhouse of power.

Kevin's Rampager form fully awakened—circuits blazing, strength climbing past anything the Matrix had previously allowed. He met Brihaana's shotgun blast with an open palm. The spread of pellets flattened against living light and fell as harmless lead rain. Kevin's return punch folded the woman in half and launched her through the bleachers.

Wyatt moved like the absence of fear given flesh. Ordinary blood on his knuckles stripped a Jinete of his borrowed Glimmer mid-swing; the man dropped as a screaming, powerless human. Bella's feather storm turned three more into pincushions. Bandile lifted an entire police cruiser and used it as a battering ram. Lucifer Jr. finally stopped holding back—white-gold wings tore free of his back and the light that poured from them burned shadows into permanent scars on the asphalt.

Xarak and Ava still circled each other.

"You could join me," the Demon Vampire offered almost gently. "The night is only going to get longer."

Ava's answer was another three rounds and a combat knife that she drove toward his throat. Xarak caught the blade between two fingers, bent it into a harmless curve, and leaned in close enough that she could smell the grave on his breath.

"Cute."

Then the golden light arrived.

A perfect sphere of living gold tore open above the school like a second sun. Midas stepped through it, still smiling with molten joy, skin gleaming, eyes pure coin.

"I smelled family," he said, voice carrying over every gunshot. "And I smelled a brother who still thinks he can undo me."

Khaos Hyde, Callie, Syizak, and the rest of the medical-wing war party stepped out of a chaos rift ten meters away. Khaos set the golden statue of Poison down with infinite care.

"You took my brother," he said. The chaos energy around him no longer crackled. It screamed. "I'm taking him back."

Midas laughed.

The gold statue of Poison twitched.

One golden finger moved.

Then another.

The conversion was reversing—not because Midas was dying, but because something older and hungrier had decided the joke was no longer funny.

Inside the Kruger veil the spiral crack widened. Golden light poured through. Hades looked up, expression unreadable, and for the first time since the dome dropped he stopped walking.

Nathan's voice cut across every open channel the Guardians still had.

"Everyone listen. The gold is moving on its own. The Garden is watching. And something just woke up that even the Pillar was afraid of."

At Willowbrook High, Poison's golden eyes opened.

They were no longer gold.

They were the exact shade of the black glass that sealed Kruger National Park.

The day had only just begun to break.
